Turkish FM Davutoglu rejects claims that crisis in Syria, Iranian threat led to Israel’s apology over ‘Mavi Marmara.’
Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmed Davutoglu rejected claims that Turkey’s decision to reconcile with Israel was precipitated by the crisis in Syria or tensions with Iran, Turkish daily Hurriyet reported on Friday, citing a Davutoglu interview with a local television station.
“There is no connection between Turkey’s demand for an apology and its actualization and Turkey’s policy to Iran and Syria; it is out of the question,” Davutoglu stated in the interview aired Thursday.
Davutoglu said rather, that Israel’s apology came about as the result of “heavy pressure on Israel on every diplomatic field.”
The Turkish foreign minister said that the subject of an Israeli apology was first broached when US Secretary of State John Kerry visited Turkey in early March.
“After Kerry’s visit we had contact over the telephone, SMS and emails,” Hurriyet quoted Davutoglu as saying.
He added that Kerry presented a finished proposal for the apology during US President Barack Obama’s visit to Israel. The news of the apology was announced by the White house shortly after Obama left the Jewish state following a three-day visit.
Davutoglu stated that there were no direct conversations between Israel and Turkey in the lead-up to the apology, but that all negotiating was done through Washington.
“Obama’s presence during the phone conversation softened the atmosphere,” Davutoglu said.
Turkish Deputy Prime Minister Bulent Arinc said Friday that Ankara was expecting to receive an Israeli delegation in Turkey next week in order to discuss reparations for the families of those killed aboard the Mavi Marmara.
“No one should talk about figures at the moment. People should not have certain expectations about the amount of the reparations,” the Andalou Agency quoted him as saying.

I think most American conservatives are brain dead ideologues who haven’t a clue and fall back on old worn platitudes and morphisms in place of rational thought based on real facts, data and truth. You supported Reagan through Bush.
Reagan took office with the national debt of $848 billion and left office $2, 698 trillion increase of 218% G W Bush took office with 6 trillion and left office with $10.7 trillion increase of 86%. Where was your conservative criticism of Reagan and Bush? Clinton left a budget surplus of %236 billion Bush Ran budget deficits of nearly $500-600 billion in each of his years in office. Why did you support Bush and Reagan? Did Obama inherit the economic meltdown from Bush or not? Was the first Bailouts approved under Bush or Obama? Was Paulson past CEO of Goldman Sacks the treasury sec. or not? Did Godlman make out like Bandits or not? Why were you silent on Bush but not Obama?
When the Fed has back door-ed free loans to their friends behind the back of congress to the tune of over 30 trillion dollars of your tax dollars, debasing your currency under republican presidents and congresses, did you make any cry of protest to stop. Your silence is de facto approval. Trillion spent in losing wars over priced weaponry graft all over the place and you rail against Obama? Millions of illegal running wild all over the country mostly being supported on your tax dollars was not stopped under Bush but encouraged. Where was your criticism against Bush?
Should I innumerate the trade agreements of Republican admins. that killed jobs for Americans, enriched big American corps and shipped most of American manufacturing and good paying jobs overseas? Where was your criticism?
Don’t get any ideas I like or support Obama either but I, unlike you are not a blind brain-dead partisan hypocrite like you. I am not a conservative nor a liberal although I am conservative on some things and liberal on others.
Above all I am a Jew living in the Land of Israel and proud of it. I criticize my government here based on performance not on ideology. Ideology is fine until it becomes more important than truth and covering for corrupt incompetent fools.

The use of left wing and right wing labels are anachronisms, even though I use them out of laziness. Its how “useful idiots” are used to support agendas they would not normally support, because they are packaged with other agendas they do support. I often have left wing conclusions in one area and right wing in another.
I agree with Yamit

this is a sensible first choice. I believe that pepsi cola was the first “capitalist” corporation to invest in the USSR. In the “left wing communism” there were no labor unions to give problems. Profit was guaranteed by the communist govt. maintaining stability. The same is true right now in China. The least free market “communist” country has made the greatest growth in wealth as a result of capitalist investment and purchases. Ideologies exist to confuse and obfuscate: we often find that those touting ideologies practice self interest instead. Economics like politics “makes for strange bedfellows”.

It is not a reversal by Israel but a reversal by Turkey probably under pressure from US. The final proposal, now accepted by Turkey, has been made by Israel before and rejected by Turkey. It has been written in debka, or WND, that turkey could not get certain equipment from the US without resolving the issue. It may be that the only difference between this proposal and the last rejected one is the use of the word apology rather than regret. Turkey has now accepted that Israel will not end the blockade as was originally demanded by erdogan. How it works out is anyone’s guess because erdogan is a bombastic and boastful dunce trying to become caliph and reinstate the ottoman empire. Every argument he has begun has blown up in his foolish, clownish, oafish machismo face. He is a bag of wind who threatens everyone and now lacks credibility with anyone. He has alienated everyone, not only Israel. BB was advised by past and present DM’s that the relationship was in Israel’s interest. the US wanted it for various reason including military coordination of exisitng systems with Israel and cooperation with Israel and Nato. Obviously it all involves Iran.

I honestly can’t believe that this is the same Yamit who is claiming that Netanyahu is a softie. To hear you on the environment or about capitalism, you sound so left-wing that by comparison you make Ha’aretz seem like Arutz Sheva.
I’m disgusted with Bibi.

You would be surprised how few are Israelis who have heard of Israels gas finds and shale oil potential. Never seen or heard on any of our MSN outlets. Most information in financial and business news sections of papers and blogs which few read and if they did they would need to have someone to put it in contextual perspective and in a language the layman can relate to.
Nobel oil is a Texas concern who while quite small by American and International standards do have influence and when Israel was considering changing the terms of the agreement so that Israel would get a bigger share of the profits they got the State Dept and Obama to intercede with pressure to kill the attempted changes. There were massive threats and even financial retaliation by the American government.
Always look to financial interests before accepting the spin going in other directions. Not always possible as a lot is not public but ultimately in a country like Israel there are few secrets and when they are it always comes out sooner or later.

GAS PIPELINE…..MUCHO DINERO!!!!!!!!!!!!
This apology is so absurd that that it cannot be explained away by the simple capitulation by the PM and Bogie. Why would the PM reverse his stance after three years of refusing to apologize and to do that exactly at the time Obama was visiting? So obviously there is a connection. Would ANYTHING justify such an absurd apology? Well, yes, it would only make sense if it helps Israel defend itself against the existential threat coming from Iran. Would not some crucial quid pro quo from Obama regarding Iran be the only logical explanation? After all, Bibi and Bogie are not fools. The probability that both of them have taken leave of their senses to commit such an inexplicable blunder at exactly the same time is just too small.
Israel’s apology to Turkey. An explanation.
