The scientists who aren’t there

Everyone knows “climate-change deniers” know nothing about science. Oh wait…

More than 1100 scientists, scholars and other professionals have signed up to a statement stating “there is no climate emergency”.

The statement has been produced by the Climate Intelligence Group. This was founded in 2019 by emeritus professor of geophysics Guus Berkhout and science journalist Marcel Crok.

But hey, everyone knows that “climate-change deniers” know nothing about science.

The Declaration says that anthropogenic global warming theory (AGW), the doctrine that tells us the world is on course for planetary catastrophe as a result of rising CO2 levels, is profoundly unscientific. It states:

  • Natural as well as anthropogenic factors cause warming
  • Warming is far slower than predicted
  • Climate policy relies on inadequate models
  • CO2 is plant food, the basis of all life on Earth
  • Global warming has not increased natural disasters
  • Climate policy must respect scientific and economic realities

And it comments:

To believe the outcome of a climate model is to believe what the model makers have put in. This is precisely the problem of today’s climate discussion to which climate models are central. Climate science has degenerated into a discussion based on beliefs, not on sound self-critical science. Should not we free ourselves from the naive belief in immature climate models?

Seen this declaration reported in any mainstream media outlets? Of course not. Everyone knows that “climate-change deniers” know nothing about science.

  1. 500-Year Drought Afflicting W. Europe, E. Africa, US-Mex. Border

From dry and cracked reservoirs in Spain to falling water levels on major arteries like the Danube, the Rhine and the Po, an unprecedented drought is afflicting nearly half of Europe. It is damaging farm economies, forcing water restrictions, causing wildfires and threatening aquatic species.

There has been no significant rainfall for almost two months in the continent’s western, central and southern regions. In typically rainy Britain, the government officially declared a drought across southern and central England on Friday amid one of the hottest and driest summers on record.

And Europe’s dry period is expected to continue in what experts say could be the worst drought in 500 years.

Climate change is exacerbating conditions as hotter temperatures speed up evaporation, thirsty plants take in more moisture and reduced snowfall in the winter limits supplies of fresh water available for irrigation in the summer. Europe isn’t alone in the crisis, with drought conditions also reported in East Africa, the western United States and northern Mexico.

It’s curious, that these droughts are all in conflict zones. Besides them, I notice that Chongching, China is also affected.

  2. CO2 is plant food, the basis of all life on Earth

    Corals are animals, not plants

“Although some corals are able to catch plankton and small fish using stinging cells on their tentacles, most corals obtain the majority of their energy and nutrients from photosynthetic unicellular dinoflagellates of the genus Symbiodinium that live within their tissues.”

Dinoflagellates are mostly marine plankton, but they also are common in freshwater habitats. Their populations vary with sea surface temperature, salinity, and depth. Many dinoflagellates are photosynthetic. Most plants, algae, and cyanobacteria perform photosynthesis; such organisms are called photoautotrophs. Photosynthesis is largely responsible for producing and maintaining the oxygen content of the Earth’s atmosphere, and supplies most of the energy necessary for life on Earth.

So yes, corals ultimately depend on CO2 — and also on sunlight; and growth has some relationship to sea surface temperature, salinity and depth. What all this has to do with coal-powered electric cars, cow farts and private jets is beyond me.
