The Magical Misery Tour

When nuance is black and white.

A host of progressive organizations use their ostensible Jewishness as cover or sanction for their campaigns against Israel. J Street, which calls itself “pro-Israel” and “pro-peace,” is perhaps the best known among them. There’s no better example of how this works than J Street’s recent launch of a program to compete with Birthright Israel, the 20-year-old organization that’s provided free trips to Israel for more than 600,000 young Jews around the world.

According to J Street, “the omission and erasure of Palestinian perspectives and narratives on these [Birthright] trips creates a political environment that allows home demolitions, settlement expansion, and other destructive policies of occupation to continue unchallenged.” Instead, the group says, “organized educational trips for young American Jews must present a robust, nuanced and honest view of the current realities on the ground in Israel and the Palestinian Territory.”

  1. @ Adam Dalgliesh: I posted this comment under this excellent article by Mr. Greenwald. But it is not relevant here. I had intended it for a different article. But it was late at night, and I must have been confused when I posted it here.

Please read Mr. Trofimov’s article “The New Antisemitism,” elswhere on Israpundit. I have reposted the above comment there, where you can read it in context. Thanks, everyone whom I may have confused, Adam.

  2. @ Robert_k: Robert, many Jews are anti-Israel, and some are antisemitic. As the Doors song says, “Impossible-yes-but it’s true.”

  3. In general, an excellent article. But he is wrong about some points. The number of Jews killed in Islamist terrorist attacks in France that were motivated either in whole or in part by antisemitism, plus other killings of Jews by Muslims in France that were motivated either in whole or in part by antisemitism, certainly exceded by many times the number of Jews killed in the Pittsburgh massacre. His claim that most antisemitic incidents in France and Britain have been the work of non-Muslims is extremely dubious. It is difficult to get reliable and exact figures on the number of antisemitic attacks by Muslims in either country, because the police in both countries often deny that antisemitic attacks were antisemitic, prefering to label them as the result of mental illness.

  4. 2/3 of J Street’s founding Board of Directors were active or retired US State Dept employees and gentile. Obama’s creation to undermine Jewish unity thru AIPAC. Same as Wall dispute; sever Reform from supporting Israel and dozens of female Rabbis fell for it.

  5. Recently walked through old city jaffa gate to Kotel, would not walk that route again, offended by sodomites trying to sell me Jewish/Israeli item’s. Not trying to be a racist but just fussy who gets my agrott. Left by dung gate and walked around the outer walls.
Then to Hevron after visit to sidrat (showed the flag) will not enter the forefathers cave, find being a Jew a municipal tax payer I find it offensive to have to go through metal detectors etc. Time to solve the problem created by the slime Clinton and the fool nutunyahoo.

  6. The above comment is very misleading , Soros , at the most, has provided regular donations to J Street, that comprise 2.5 percent of its annual funding.- and thats according to J Street

  7. J Street and the New York Times must be Poe-Israel as J Street is funded by the Jewish Hungarian Holocaust survivor George Soros and the New York Times is published by the Schultzberger family, a family of Reform German Jewish origin.
