Interior Minister fears that the law will be rejected by the Supreme Court and the prosecution will not defend it.
Interior Minister Ayelet Shaked is backing down from her intention to pass the law revoking the citizenship of terrorists, the Israel Hayom website reported on Monday.
Shaked backed down from the law, which had already been registered, after a conversation between her associates and the Ministry of Justice revealed that the law would not stand the test of the Supreme Court.
Under the original bill, an Israeli citizen convicted of a terrorist act and found to be receiving terrorist benefits from the Palestinian Authority (PA) will lose his Israeli citizenship. Instead, he will be referred to apply to a Palestinian Arab passport since his actions were testimony to the fact that he is loyal to the PA and not to the State of Israel.
Shaked has pledged several times throughout the year she has been in office that she will pass the law. However, those around her say that the Ministry of Justice has made it clear in preliminary discussions that the Supreme Court will invalidate the law as it is currently worded, and that the prosecution does not intend to defend it when the petitions against it are submitted to the Supreme Court.
Instead of revoking citizenship, Shaked now intends to promote in legislation the denial of benefits to Israelis convicted of terrorist activity.
This is despite the fact that a similar law already exists and is partially implemented. In addition, additional options are being considered to lower the status of Israeli terrorists, but at this stage no legislative proceedings will be initiated, until a Supreme Court ruling on the issue, which is expected in the next two months.
@Sebastien
I quite agree. This was not her first rodeo and it is not as if she did not know who the players in this game would be – they are her governmental partners after all. Another disappointment from her and her ignominious block.
Then she should have done her research before introducing it publicly and then looked for another way. Now, she just gave the right a defeat and a black eye for no good reason. Or is she making a point about the left wing judiciary to show the public? Somehow, I doubt it. If Israel did this – and she should – still, it would be a first. I’ve never heard of terrorists being stripped of citizenship, anywhere. Great idea, though.
@shebapython
That would certainly work, but do you thing the nation that knocks on buildings to alert the terrorists to vacate before their empty headquarters are demolished would actually pursue such a sensible policy of deterrence? Certainly their council of self empowered Jurists would not. But that is the sort of policy that would solve the terrorist issue.
Castration and lobotomization of terrorists, with return to their families for the burden of a lifetime of care will end terror. Do it to 5 or 6 guys and it will end. They’ll freak out for a little while but if they see Israel is serious they will stop. Not one of them wants to arrive for his 72 without their junk, or a mind to appreciate Paradise.
Revoking citizenship is a great idea. Now that Mandelblit is replaced, do we have the same problem?
She’ll be very proud of herself when Israeli Jews are slaughtered by the dozen!
She needs to grow a spine and the anti Israel Supreme Court should be replaced!
More support of the obvious tyranny of the unelected Black Robed villains whose authority is as broad as they like to claim it to be. The elected govt has no say in their governance beyond the will of this collection of political appointees whose share of power over the public needs a political hair cut.
