What part? I’m in British Columbia.@ honeybee:

I have relatives in Boca Raton, and actually, a few years ago went down there to buy an apartment. It all seemed very strange to me, my first time in the States. I stayed in a hotel for 6 weeks, living on brown bread, cheese and hard boiled eggs. Then, my cousin in Real Estate found me a very nice apartment, fully furnished in a Jewish complex which stretched for 750 acres, and had many apartment blocks. So I moved in……I didn’t realise how big 750 acres was….

I found that I was alone, knew nobody really, and was a long bus ride from my apartment to the community facilities, where a lot of lost souls wandered around… and to the gate, where I needed to catch another bus to go to town to buy food etc. I hadn’t been in a bus for 50 years and hated it.

Then I found that my visa had been messed up by the travel agent, and was for 3 months instead of 6. So, although I could have renewed it for the extra 3 months by travelling up to Toronto and back the next day, I couldn’t face more travel. I hadn’t travelled anywhere for 20 years before this trip, and hadn’t realised the great changes in (dis)comfort etc. So I reluctantly returned to Canada on the 89th day and put the apartment up for sale again….and that was that. I’m sorry I didn’t keep it, but was thoroughly fed up with the whole mess. Other than my very busy cousins whom I saw a few times, I didn’t speak more than a few meaningless words to a soul other than the hotel desk clerk for 3 months.

    So that was that…!

  4. @ dove:Glad you liked it. I think you missed my point. They have invented their own new politics as religion tradition and are being just as resistant to changing in response to new circumstances.
As Podhoretz pointed out in his book, there was a time when it made sense for Jews to align Left. But though Left and Right have switched places with regard to us, they haven’t caught on.
Their point of view is self-referential. They only believe the sources they know and trust. And they do not change their view with new evidence but rather look for evidence to support what they think they know.
As he points out, they regard becoming a Republican with the horror traditionally reserved for converting to Christianity.
As for my point of view, as I have mentioned in a previous post, my favorite quote is Jabotinksy to Weizmann:
” I can vouch for there being a type of Zionist who doesn’t care what kind of society our “state” will have; I’m that person. If I were to know that the only way to a state was via socialism, or even that this would hasten it by a generation, I’d welcome it. More than that: give me a religiously Orthodox state in which I would be forced to eat gefilte fish all day long (but only if there were no other way) and I’ll take it.”

Fiddler on the Roof – thanks for that! Haven’t looked at excerpts from that movie in ages!

I don’t think that the majority of Jews want to go back to ‘tradition’. Some if it seems ice age. Like the haredi – scarey thought – no thanks!

  6. I see that two posts have become intermingled…where I live, and my original birth place etc. ……meant for Dove.

The second part, about Boss Tweed, is meant for Birdalone.

  7. @ dove:

I presently live in Canada, but I was born and grew up in Dublin, Ireland, where I still have many relatives, including my elder sister.@ Birdalone:

Yes they did, I only meant that they had a well oiled system for gathering in immigrants to their net. I didn’t imply nor should you have inferred that Boss Tweed was dealing with Jews. He was dead-in prison- some years before the Jewish influx in large numbers began.

I mentioned Boss Tweed because he was a famous stand-out historical name for graft, corruption of all sorts, political and otherwise, and he was undoubtedly the Boss of Tammany Hall when it was the Democratic Centre for corruption from top to bottom, reaching right into the top tiers of Government; and vice that I even today, find hard to absorb.

  8. @ dove:

I presently live in Canada, but I was born and grew up in Dublin, Ireland, where I still have many relatives, including my elder sister.

  9. @ Edgar G.: The history of political affiliation of Jews in America is not quite how you describe it, especially that Boss Tweed legacy of meeting new (in his time, it was the Irish) immigrants at the dock.

It was Harry S. Truman’s recognition of Israel that helped strengthen Jewish affinity for the then Klan-dominated Democratic Party after 1948, but Reagan won New York in 1980 and 1984 because of the Jewish vote.

    Confused? from wiki:

Jacob Koppel “Jack” Javits was an American politician who served as a United States Senator from New York from 1957 to 1981. He was a liberal Republican who served in Congress for 30 years

Since then, this Tikkun Olam – repair the world- concept seems to have turned non-Orthodox Jews into chronic Social Justice warriors. A much better explanation is here:

  10. @ dove:
This book pretty much nails it:

    https://www.amazon.com/Why-Jews-Liberals-Norman-Podhoretz/dp/0307456250

Article by same author more or less sums up:
    http://www.wsj.com/articles/SB10001424052970203440104574402591116901498

You may only be able to access it once without a subscription.

What he says in the book but omits in the article is that it made sense once for Jews to identify with the Left rather than the Right because the Right was the main home to anti-semitism.
But, while the reality has flipped, Most Jews are still stuck in a time warp*. Hence, the ease with which the dems have been able to circulate the canard that Trump stimulates anti-semitism because of some of his supporters.
They don’t believe that the anti-semites on the Left outnumber them ten to one, though this is also partly because traditional White anti-semites who openly hate Jews on a racial basis are mainly on the Right though they are a fringe -though there are plenty of Black racial anti-semites on the Left.
Actually, it was William Buckley who banished anti-semitic groups on the right like the John Birch Society to the fringes.
Almost makes up for him buying WNCN, the main classical music station in NY and selling it to a Rock and Roll Station.
Hilariously, WNYC, a public station just bought WQXR, the other classical music station in NY, and made it into even more of a classical music station.
So, it doesn’t pay to be too doctrinaire about economics. The devil is in the details.

“There is no percentage in arguing with fanatics.” – Mark Twain

*I wonder if this isn’t a feature of traditional Judaism that hasn’t simply become part of the Jewish character to some extent, even of secular Jews who want to reinvent the wheel**.
I asked a Chasidic musician I was playing a Jewish event with why there was no fish along with the meat. I mean I understood why there was no dairy — See, I was reduced to eating heaping portions of coleslaw and pickles.
He said, (erudite guy, some observant Jews would just say, “because!” not knowing the answer, themselves) – Well, there was a situation somewhere centuries ago, where either the fish and meat combination was treif (yiddish for unkosher, literally, “unclean”) or where there was something wrong with the fish.
So, I said, “so you mean because there was a situation where it made sense from a practical standpoint to not combine them, the fact that they did it once made it a tradition carved in stone forever?”

    He said, “Yes.”

**Lenin said of Trotsky’s theory of Permanent Revolution, “Calling for Permanent Revolution is like calling for Permanent Surgery.”

    Like the NY subway system.

You know, Trotsky lived on the Lower East Side for a while before returning to Russia for the revolution in 1917. He based their public library system on the NY Public Library System.

    Hmmm.

    A propos of nothing:
Here’s a story you won’t hear in the mainstream media: The NY City Council is considering a bill, as we speak, to repeal the law of gravity.
You see, somebody realized, that if Sir Isaac Newton had traveled in time to the present and ridden the Buses and Subways in Manhattan before going back, he would have realized that what goes up does not necessarily come back down.
No, instead, when he threw that apple up in the air, instead he most likely would have seen a glowing sign in the sky saying, “15 min. plus delay in terminal.” or just “Delay.”

  11. @ Edgar G.:

Not just American Jews. Israeli Jews are also puzzling. They know the history with Clinton (not good). With Trump it is uncharted territory – fear of the unknown. Surprised there isn’t a much higher percentage of Israelis that don’t see the potential danger Clinton would have been to them had she been elected.

Clinton was trying to make this a gender issue. Implying that voting against her is voting against women. Ridiculous! She doesn’t get it that maybe she was the wrong woman for the job?? She had much more leverage and media support than Trump. It’s the American people that decided they rather go with Trump and I don’t believe the main reason is because he is a male.

  14. @ dove:

The American Jews as a whole, are basically a disgrace to Judaism. And have been for the last 30 years or more. Their obsession with the Democrats right or wrong, is sickening. The Dems, being organised from Boss Tweed’s and Tammany Hall time did a clever thing. They met the Jewish immigrants off the boats, brought them some food and a little money and often found them a place to stay. Then they made sure that they’d vote Democrat..some almost immediately with false identities, as they didn’t understand, not speaking English. So they were grateful to the Dems and that caused a bond, that’s lasted until today. How else could it be explained after the last election when trying to get Israel on the platform caused a huge putbreak of booing, and it was left out. That should have been the writing on the wall for Jews……

But, by then, they were hardly Jews at all, being the kind who would meet one another on Yom Kipur at a restaurant for lunch of ham sandwiches or pork chops and other chazar. As Jews, the American Community is well on it’s way out. In another 30 years the only Jews there will be almost all Orthodox and Habad, a small inority of the famous 6-7 million so-called American Jews.

  15. (censor problem)
Even though T-r-u-m-p said H3llary called him, I think he meant “her r-e-p-r-e-s-e-n-t-a-t-iv-e” p-h-o-ne-d him.

I’m pretty sure it was H-um-a A-b-e-d-i-n calling for her. That is what Trump actually said earlier. H3llary was probably too busy in her i-r-o-n l-u-n-g or t-h-r-o-w-i-n-g s-h-o-e-s at s-e-c-r-e-t s-e-r-v-i-c-e a-g-e-n-t-s.

  16. Apparently about 70% of American Jews are upset with the result. Shows how little they know and understand Clintons lethal attitude towards Israel. But then again…..those Jews are probably so far removed from Israel.

This result should put a stop to helping our enemies succeed.

Seriously…..look at rock stars. Take Tom Jones for example – women would screech and throw their underwear at him.</blockquote

It's interesting that you mention Tom Jones because I've told this story several times.

"I actually saw his very first TV interview when he burst on the scene, a completely ignorant, unlettered, an all thumbs labourer….. The interview lasted only a few minutes, because Jones couldn't answer ony of the soft lob questions thrown at him …….something like this (paraphrasing)

"How do you feel when you first saw the big crowds listening and applauding…"…awkward pause…"Well…yeh'll 'ave to ask me manager"…. "How is it for you to be travelling and perform one night here and the next might somewhere else…"..awkward pause…"well, me manager does all that ye'll 'ave to ask him"… And there were 2-3 questions -and answers -like those, and the interviewer gave up…….

Now we only hear about Sir Tom Jones the legend. I'm speaking figuratively because for the past say 45 years I haven't heard, other than an occasional reference in the news.

(But I liked his voice, (before he so quickly got into the screaming style so popular then and since) as being close to a Negro Blues type. I've been very deep into New Orleans Jazz all my life, until this very day, and played in several bands of note.

Then, after a while, he blossomed out into a sunflower, as if he'd always been one.

  21. @ Max:
i’ve been watching the whole thing unfold daily since long before he won the nomination since abou when the candidates were down to about 10. i watched every talk show, getting the leads from whatever was published on here, and then following each host, until the end, after which anothe selection would appear and so on. I must have spent 6-7 hours at it every day for the past few months, and saw the whole denoument last night from the beginning to end, alternating between Fox, CNBC and 538,( for the first time) which is a good blog. Fox was poor last night , had the greatest trouble finding it, and then couldn’t find the actual coverage. I never looked for it before always seeing it on this site. so ended up mostly with CNBC. 22. After he sensationally won the White House race, Clinton phoned him at 2:30 a.m. to concede she had lost and in the first words of his victory speech he said: ‘We owe her a debt of gratitude and I mean that very sincerely’. [disturbing]

I suspect that after hearing Podesta speech trump chuckled and sent hillary the message that any contesting will simply reveal all the dem fraud in the election and put many in prison for election fraud.

I am troubled by Trumps compliment to hillary and would be deeply dismayed if the ball is dropped on all the criminality of the clintons and the establishment network. The tendency of politicians is to let the last guys alone so that they will leave you alone in the future… an unwritten rule. It would not be the first time I was fooled by a pol if he drops the ball on pursuing the corruption. Its not enough to chase them out… the lot of them should be locked up and their ill gotten gains retrieved to the public… plus soros should be pursued.

Hillary Clinton publicly conceded the election to Donald J. Trump on Wednesday morning, acknowledging the pain of the defeat in remarks in New York while calling on her supporters to accept that he would be president to give him a chance to lead with an open mind.

Yeh, not liking it. Crimes cannot be forgiven as simply an election drama… if trump made the accusations then he must follow through with the pursuit of justice.. if he does not then everything else he promised will go the way of the usual. I hope he does what he says, if he backs off pursuing the criminality that will be a bad sign.

Seems like your buddy Babushka is more entrenched in U.S.A. than our homeland….sad reality.

As far as Trumps off colour comments go…..if you look through all the smoke and mirrors I think the message he was really conveying is that once a man becomes rich and famous you can have access to all kinds of women. They will fall at your feet and sleep with you on a dime…..not caring at all about your family. Not all women of course but way too many. Those of us who have dignity need to work harder to get the message out and tell these women they are making spectacles of all women and need to keep their legs closed.
