Israeli police have thwarted a major attempt to smuggle ammunition destined for terrorists in Judea and Samaria, seizing over 20,000 bullets in a critical operation. The bust, announced on Sunday, represents a significant blow to efforts aimed at arming terrorist groups in the region.
Two suspects, residents of Ma’ale Iron near Megiddo, were apprehended during the operation. Officers stopped their vehicle near Megiddo Junction, just minutes from the Samaria security barrier. The men, aged 22 and 35, are now in custody and undergoing interrogation by security forces.
“This massive seizure, worth hundreds of thousands of shekels, is another success of the Northern District in locating the sources of illegal arms and eliminating smuggling routes,” the Israel Police stated.
The smuggling attempt highlights the ongoing threat posed by terror networks in the region, many of which are believed to receive support from Iran. In April, reports from The New York Times cited Israeli, Iranian, and American officials confirming that Iran is actively supplying weapons to fuel violence in Judea and Samaria. While most smuggled arms consist of small weapons and rifles, advanced systems like anti-tank missiles and rocket-propelled grenades are also finding their way into terrorist arsenals.
The escalation in violence is evident in data released by Hatzalah Judea and Samaria. In the first half of 2024, the region experienced an average of over 500 terrorist attacks monthly, with a total of 3,272 incidents recorded by first responders. These included nearly 1,900 cases of rock-throwing, 456 Molotov cocktail attacks, 299 explosive charges, and 109 shootings. From January to July, terrorists killed 14 people and injured more than 155 others.
Efforts to disrupt terror supply chains are vital to curbing these threats. The successful interception of this ammunition shipment underscores the vigilance of Israel’s security forces in protecting the nation’s citizens.
