Peloni: The US is leveraging the Israeli govt from multiple vantage points to surrender their pursuit of the war and the question remains whether the Israeli govt will do so. Gadi and Mike have differing opinions on this matter, but I find that I am in far greater agreement with Gadi than with Mike in this discussion. Regardless of this, though, the conversation is insightful and important to contemplate.

The Biden administration is pressing for an end to the war in a hostage deal, while working to topple Benjamin Netanyahu’s government. It has many allies and tools in this effort: the threat to sanction an IDF unit, the looming specter of international arrest warrants from the Hauge, the Israeli anti-Netanyahu press and, from within the cabinet, an attempt by Benny Gantz to push for accepting a near-surrender hostage deal. At the same time, the right flank of Netanyahu’s coalition has issued an ultimatum: should such a deal come to pass they will opt out and topple the coalition. Has Netanyahu reached the end of his rope?

While all those who prefer that Palestine be free from the tiver to the sea, Netanyahu is the big obstacle. Take him out and the rest of the problem will go away like the natural gas fields off the northern coast of Israel. It seems that too many people have a megaphone but it is the Israeli electorate that has the last word, and they want Bibi.
