Haaretz publisher Amos Schocken blasts move on Twitter, calls PM Netanyahu, right-wing politicians “murderers in suits” for deciding to deport migrants to Rwanda • Netanyahu: Attacks only strengthen my resolve to remove illegal migrants from Israel.
Rwanda’s Foreign Minister Louise Mushikiwabo on Thursday confirmed recent reports that Kigali is in talks with Jerusalem for her country to take in illegal African migrants currently residing in Israel.
In an interview with Rwandan newspaper The New Times, Mushikiwabo said, “I do not have the numbers but from the discussions with Israel a while back, it had to be something around 10,000 or a bit more than that, and we were comfortable with that.”
Haaretz publisher Amos Schocken blasted the move on his Twitter account, Thursday.
In a post he linked to an opinion piece in Haaretz by Lior Birger, titled “Torture, death at sea: What awaits asylum seekers Israel deports,” Schocken wrote, “The murderers in suits: [Yachad leader and former Shas MK] Eli Yishai, [former Likud MK] Gideon Saar, [Public Security Minister] Gilad Erdan, [Interior Minister] Aryeh Deri, [Culture Minister] Miri Regev, [Justice Minister] Ayelet Shaked, [Prime Minister] Benjamin Netanyahu.”
In a second post, Schocken wrote, “Infiltrators is correct, Mr. Prime Minister, but also asylum seekers, whose requests you have prevented from being heard. If you are determined to remove them, send them to Canada or countries where their security is ensured. This is your responsibility.”
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, however, was left undeterred.
“The attacks by Amos Schocken, the publisher of Haaretz, only strengthen my resolve – to continue to remove the illegal migrants from the State of Israel,” he tweeted.
