If it is to punish him because of Lockerbie, they should have done it right away. He gave up his nuclear activity and paid reparations to the victims families. So why now? They are even fear mongering about the possibility of Qadaffi using Mustard Gas. What is this concern based on? Why does the Arab League want him taken down? Why is the west fronting for the Arab League. Why doesn’t the west say its your neighborhood, its your initiative, so you do it? We know nothing of the “rebel forces”. It took Bush a year to get all the consents needed from Congress, the Senate and the UN before attacking Iraq. Here it took less than 30 days and both houses were not consulted. Both in Serbia and Libya the sovereign power was trying to suppress revolt. In both cases the revolt became violent with weapons of all types being used. What is the sovereign to do. He must defeat the revolt. This requires use of considerable force. Obviously the world is denying the sovereign power the right of self defense. Apply that to Israel. All the Palestinians have to do is start a war. As soon as Israel moves to suppress with all means at its disposal, the UN will pass a similar resolution authorizing the use of force. Western warplanes, missiles batter Libyan targets

TRIPOLI – Western forces hit targets along the Libyan coast on Saturday, using strikes from air and sea to force Muammar Gaddafi’s troops to cease fire and end attacks on civilians.
Libyan state television said 48 people had been killed and 150 wounded in the allied air strikes. It also said there had been a fresh wave of strikes on Tripoli early on Sunday.
There was no way to independently verify the claims.
CBS News on its website said on Sunday that three US B-2 stealth bombers had dropped 40 bombs on a “major Libyan airfield” that was not further identified. A Pentagon spokesman said he had no information about such an attack.
French planes fired the first shots in what is the biggest international military intervention in the Arab world since the 2003 invasion of Iraq, destroying tanks and armored vehicles in the region of the rebels’ eastern stronghold, Benghazi.
Hours later, US and British warships and submarines launched 110 Tomahawk missiles against air defenses around the capital Tripoli and the western city of Misrata, which has been besieged by Gaddafi’s forces, US military officials said.
They said US forces and planes were working with Britain, France, Canada and Italy in operation “Odyssey Dawn”.
Gaddafi called it “colonial, crusader” aggression.
“It is now necessary to open the stores and arm all the masses with all types of weapons to defend the independence, unity and honor of Libya,” he said in an audio message broadcast on state television hours after the strikes began.
Meanwhile, officials in Washington and Europe expressed concern that Gaddafi could use stockpiles of Mustard Gas against his own people if he becomes desperate. According to a Washington Post report, Western reconnaissance satellites have been keeping close tabs on Libya’s chemical weapons stores.
Officials said that the possibility of Gaddafi resorting to, or having the capacity to deliver the chemical weapons was unlikely. Last week, however, Libya’s former ambassador to the United Nations Abdurrahman Mohamed Shalgham warned that, “I do expect that he’s going to attack Benghazi with chemical weapons,” if the fighting reaches the rebel stronghold.
China and Russia, which abstained in the UN Security Council vote last week endorsing intervention, expressed regret at the military action. China’s Foreign Ministry said it hoped the conflict would not lead to a greater loss of civilian life.
Explosions and heavy anti-aircraft fire rattled Tripoli in the early hours of Sunday. The shooting was followed by defiant shouts of “Allahu Akbar” that echoed around the city center.
Libyan state television showed footage from an unidentified hospital of what it called victims of the “colonial enemy”. Ten bodies were wrapped up in white and blue bed sheets, and several people were wounded, one of them badly, the television said.
Tripoli residents said they had heard an explosion near the eastern Tajoura district, while in Misrata they said strikes had targeted an airbase used by Gaddafi’s forces.
A Reuters witness in the eastern rebel stronghold of Benghazi reported loud explosions and anti-aircraft fire, but it was unclear which side was shooting.
The intervention, after weeks of diplomatic wrangling, was welcomed in Benghazi with a mix of apprehension and relief.
“We think this will end Gaddafi’s rule. Libyans will never forget France’s stand with them. If it weren’t for them, then Benghazi would have been overrun tonight,” said Iyad Ali, 37.
“We salute France, Britain, the United States and the Arab countries for standing with Libya. But we think Gaddafi will take out his anger on civilians. So the West has to hit him hard,” said civil servant Khalid al-Ghurfaly, 38.
Gaddafi seen losing grip on Libya
The strikes, launched from some 25 ships, including three US submarines, in the Mediterranean, followed a meeting in Paris of Western and Arab leaders backing the intervention.
French President Nicolas Sarkozy said participants had agreed to use “all necessary means, especially military” to enforce the Security Council resolution calling for an end to attacks on civilians.
“Colonel Gaddafi has made this happen,” British Prime Minister David Cameron told reporters after the meeting. “We cannot allow the slaughter of civilians to continue.”
Some analysts have questioned the strategy for the military intervention, fearing Western forces might be sucked into a long civil war despite a US insistence — repeated on Saturday — that it has no plans to send ground troops into Libya.
Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper suggested that outside powers hoped their intervention would be enough to turn the tide against Gaddafi and allow Libyans to force him out.
“It is our belief that if Mr. Gaddafi loses the capacity to enforce his will through vastly superior armed forces, he simply will not be able to sustain his grip on the country.”
But analysts have questioned what Western powers will do if the Libyan leader digs in, especially since they do not believe they would be satisfied with a de facto partition which left rebels in the east and Gaddafi running a rump state in the west.
One participant at the Paris meeting said Clinton and others had stressed Libya should not be split in two. And on Friday, Obama specifically called on Gaddafi’s forces to pull back from the western cities of Zawiyah and Misrata as well from the east.
“It’s going to be far less straightforward if Gaddafi starts to move troops into the cities which is what he has been trying to do for the past 24 hours,” said Marko Papic at the STRATFOR global intelligence group.
“Once he does that it becomes a little bit more of an urban combat environment and at that point it’s going to be difficult to use air power from 15,000 feet to neutralize that.”
The Libyan government has blamed rebels, who it says belong to al-Qaida, for breaking a ceasefire it announced on Friday.
In Tripoli, several thousand people gathered at the Bab al-Aziziyah palace, Gaddafi’s compound bombed by US warplanes in 1986, to show their support.
“There are 5,000 tribesmen that are preparing to come here to fight with our leader. They better not try to attack our country,” said farmer Mahmoud el-Mansouri.
“We will open up Libya’s deserts and allow Africans to flood to Europe to blow themselves up as suicide bombers.”
Al Qaeda’s objective is to form a radical Caliphate from which to spread Sharia Law around the world. Only America – after Imam Obama – and Israel are capable of standing in their way. The feckless EU are useless.
This is precisely why the western alliance should have dithered less and acted early. These conflicts cannot be resolved by using politically correct, liberal rules of engagement. Shock and awe and a massive show of force is what we need to end these conflicts quickly and decisively, not endless hand wringing and dithering.

Footnote: No one has any idea who is involved in the Libyan opposition to Gadaffi. No one has any idea whether the Muslim Brotherhood will assume power in Egypt. If they do, we have to see whether they are more concerned about Israel, or about Iran as the Saudis were based on the Wikileaks. One thing most of us seem to agree on, except possibly Yamit and Catarin, is that Obama is a menace to the US and Israel, domestically and internationally, and has to go ASAP.
Where did the rebels in Libya suddenly get heavy weapons from? Who is supplying them with armor, anti-aircraft weapons and shoulder launched rockets?
Reasons for bombing Lybia
1) Obama is unstable and autocratic. He told Mubarak he has to step down now, and it happened. He told Qaddafi to step and he did not. Hence the attack. And without approval of congress or even an heartfelt address to the American people and to the soldiers he is sending in harms way, or even interrupting his trip to Brazil and all the fun there.
2) Qaddafi tried to “play with the Big Boys” and those who “rule the rulers” cannot allow this to stand. Qaddafi threatened the West’s ability to buy his oil. The oil refineries etc. are around Bengazi. Hence Qaddafi’s rapid push to Benghazi. The oil companies and the West do not want other Arab countries to get the idea they can play this game. So, they push the Western governments to safeguard their oil interests and thus attack under the excuse of helping the “innocent”.
Question: Some of the Press is already calling the rebels “freedom Fighters”. Who are these people who within days have automatic weapons (which they fire into the air like maniacs); who have TANKS!!, who shot down a military plane (must have used a missile!). Who use English signs and slogans to support their “case”. Who danced in the streets after 9/11 etc.
Problem: If the West supports the “rebels” and this is tribal, then who knows who will be victorious – like the West supporting the Talaban in Afghanistan against the Russians.

The price of power
The Saudi monarch has offered protesters $93 billion in subsidies. Considering the squabbles that occur in the Israeli government over a few million shekels, one has to respect the Saudis.
Still, their move was a wrong one as it raised the benchmark for protesters’ demands without satisfying them.

I believe Gaddafi has already won. He may be nuts but is a wily nut. No Arab despotic leader can stay in power for over 40 years unless he is smart, astute and also ruthless. If there were a way Israel could aid Gaddafi I would ay go for it. It’s past time for Israel to be on a winning side.
The UN mandated rules of engagement insures Gaddafi will win. EU countries and America are broke and in only two days of this operation the cost already high in Billions $ in direct costs.
Fifty Libyans were killed by 122 cruise missiles $600,000 ea. unleashed on the Arab country by the US, Britain, and France. Add hundreds of fighter and bomber flights, and the effect seems almost negligible. The Western powers claim to be destroying Libyan air defense facilities, but those reports are unconfirmed, and at any rate Gaddafi did not pretend to be able to withstand an air war against them.
Gaddafi is fully prepared for this war. He has brought civilians to his military installations to create live shields, stationed some troops in urban areas and dispersed the others, and accumulated sufficient quantities of weapons to fight despite the naval blockade. The westerners can launch a limited land operation, perhaps even send commandos into a town or two, but that’s about all they would risk doing. No country wants to invest manpower in yet another Christian-Muslim war. Also, material resources are unavailable for a large-scale war: everything from guided bombs and Tomahawks to jet fuel is only available in very limited quantities.
Western tactics will encourage Gaddafi to engage in still more savage warfare. His troops are safe now in urban environments where NATO won’t dare attacking them for fear of civilian casualties.
I think it may be a good sign.
You know, Obama may be learning that even if he is pretty much on the Arab side vis-a-vis Israel, he needs to decide where he stands within the Arab world.
The Russians and Chinese opposed it.
The war against Libya is a severe threat to freedom. As a consequence of this belligerency, Israel will be the next casualty at the front to be hurt. The next domino stones then to fall will be freedom loving people all over the world.
1) The UN is a corrupt body controlled by a large Muslim voting bloc and their fellow travellers. A precedent has now been set, that the UN can gang up and bomb one of its member states. Israel always branded the “apartheid pariah” by the UN will be scheduled next for destruction.
2) Quadaffi may be a bastard…but he is our bastard. Bear in mind, after Reagan bombed him in 1986, he was quiet for several years. When Bush invaded Iraq and Afghanistan after 9/11, Quadaffi understood the message that it is risky to thumb your nose at the US and go unpunished. As a result, he gave up his nuclear program.
3) Libya under Quadaffi was closer to the West than it will ever be again. He cooperated with Europe to patrol the North African sea shore and keep out Muslim immigrants from smuggling across the Mediterranean into Italy. He proudly showed off his lady security guards and did much to liberate women in his country. The alternative to his secular western influenced regime will be the usual dreadful Islamic fare of female genital mutilation, veiled women and all the horrific rest.
4) Quadaffi will now be replaced by a regime more welcoming to Islam. While the Arab masses are demonstrating for democratic rights, it is the case similar to Germany in 1933 – one man one vote…one time. Any elections will be the last elections. Once a regime of Mullahs has been established, they will be quick to dismantle any freedoms, just as they have in Iran. All freedom loving people will suffer as a result.
5) Obama’s administration has been working to strengthen Islam on every front. The US president opposed the uprising against Ahmadinedjad’s election fraud in Iran. On the other hand, his Secretary of State has been hectoring Mubarak’s regime for years to allow democratic elections which we all know will lead to a degenerate theocracy in Egypt. We have seen the uprisings in Tunisia and Egypt, led by radical Muslim dissidents carefully nurtured in the West by US state funded institutions for years.
6) During recent weeks, Hillary Clinton has called for several times to introduce Egyptian soldiers as monitors and observers between rebels in Libya and Quadaffi government forces. But a Libyan vassal state of Egypt would be a true disaster.
7) An Islamic, radically Al-Azahr inspired Cairo regime with 80 million crazed Egyptians in control of Libya’s oil resources is the worst possible outcome for Israel and for the West. It would mean an Egypt dominated by the Muslim Brotherhood similarly furnished with cash and decrepit masses as Iran is today. It is a real horror scenario.
8) The US president has gone to war without a proper mandate from Congress. He is doing all in his power to promote Islam on every possible front.
9) The complicity of other Western powers is motivated by a mix of reasonings. Partly, it is out of ignorance and giving in to backdoor pressuring from the US. Partly, it is as a favor to other Arab regimes, who in turn are motivated to install a more traditional Islamic power in Libya. European governments are used to go along with Arab demands because of calculated interests for oil supplies, and also in many cases due to overt or covert sympathies with Arabs based on anti-Semitic hatred of Jews and all that Israel represents.
10) The media in Europe meanwhile, has brainwashed the public to believe the Arab uprisings represent progress and freedom. As usual, the media is suppressing any information on the fascist totalitarian elements of Islam just as they disregarded the horrors of Marxism.
11) As horrible as Quadaffi is, the attack on him is a real threat for all of us, and it is a further step down the road in establishing another dangerous Iranian styled rogue state. This is what Obama aspires to. It is a trajectory on which Israel will be set up for slaughter and we all will be next in line to go.
As Felix has alluded to many times this is what he believes the West including America has in store for Israel.
I don’t discount that idea completely.

Gadhafi threatens to join forces with al-Qaida
In the interview, Gadhafi said the criticism of his rule from Europe, culminating in a demand by EU leaders that he leave power, had threatened ties.
“I was really shocked by the attitude of my European friends,” he told the newspaper. “They have damaged and endangered a series of major accords on security that were in their interests and the economic cooperation that we had.”
“When your government is replaced by the opposition and the same thing happens in the rest of Europe, the Libyan people will perhaps take new relations with the West into consideration,” Gadhafi said.
Economic Ties
Until the unrest, economic ties had been blossoming. Italy, in particular had developed close links with its former colony, with which it also had agreements to block the flow of clandestine immigration from Africa. However Gadhafi said these were now under threat.
“I think and hope that the Libyan people will reconsider economic and financial ties and also those in the field of security with the west,” he said.
Eni, Italy’s biggest oil and gas company, has extensive operations in Libya, including long-term contracts and says it plans to invest some $25 billion there.
Other Italian companies with significant interests or ties include defense and aerospace group Finmeccanica and Italy’s biggest bank Unicredit.
I’ve been asking this question for a few days too. I’ve seen the question raised nowhere else. When they say it is “Unacceptable” (ugh! what a word! Like some pretend father, or school-teacher…) that he is killing his own, they don’t say it of Sudan, Iran, Bahrein, Yemen, Syria…only Libya. So, that’s the fairy-tale.
This may be giving Clinton and Obama far, far too much credit, but I wonder if they are showing Iran what cruise missiles and air/sea power, without occupation forces on the ground, can do to a regime. The war (not on Libya, but the BIG WAR) is a triangulation: a war between Sunni and Shia; between the West and Sunni Islam; and betweeen the West and Shia Islam. In this war, for the moment we are on the Sunni side because Iran appears to be irreconcilable. Both Sunni and Shia have oil. So that could switch. But the Saudis, who hate Khadafi, don’t mind us going after him (and paying for it ourselves). As though to say to Iran, “We’ve got the Americans, and all their hi-tech gizmos, in our pocket.”
I liked the old days better when Iran and Saddam were slugging it out. Our policy ought to be to encourage Sunni-Shia wars, and to help out whichever side appears to be losing so as to help them prolong it. Isn’t it time for Pakistan to kvetch about Iranian weapons in the “sovereign” territory? (Heave forfend!! I’m shocked! Just shocked!) After all, they so looove to kill each other.
Gaddafi is right!
Britain and her allies will wind up slaughtering many more innocents than Gaddafi would or could have. They will have to kill them in-order to save them is the underlying immoral rational behind that hebetudinous statement.

It must be remembered in relation to the war on Libya that the Common Foreign Security Policy (CFSP) is no longer common at all.
The EU is massively split in that the great economic power of Europe, Germany, opposes the intervention
What does this mean?
It must also be remembered that the US in the shape of Hussein Obama has went to war, and committed the great American nation and people to war, without the say so of Congress
I am no expert on the American Constitution but I suspect that what Obama and his Party, and the Republican Party also, has done is unconstitutional
That a loyal to the Constitution American could bring an impeachment against Obama and also take action against the Republican Party, including Sarah Palin, on this issue!
What does that mean?
I think it means that the crisis is driving these governments towards Fascism, a kind of World Fascism, which of course will be represented also on the domestic scene
I am actually Irish but last week I visited the Midlands of Britain, invited there by some friends of the English Defence League
I told my friends who are loyal English people, proud to be English, what a dirty country England has become. I was not speaking metaphorically either.
England really is filthy. Do they not employ cleaners for the streets any more? Are brooms and brushes a thing of the past.
Meanwhile youth unemployment is massive and there are no go Muslim areas now in Britain. Sharia Law reigns in many places in Britain.
It is a land (Britain of today) where you can taste the hatred.
Take France: mass unemployment. An economic basket case. Massive Jew Hatred inside France from all areas, spurred on by the Muslim immigrants

But the daddy of them all is Spain: here the unemployment among youth is almost total.
All job appointment in Spain is on a temporary basis. The farmers are on the streets with their massive and massively expensive tractors because the EU is pulling the gravy train from beneath them.
And the US: A pillar of economic stability there…I don’t think. The most powerful nation in the world in hock to China! California and others actually bankrupt though they call it something else
And that is what the war on Libya is all about.

I’m as clueless as you are, as to Obama’s motives, not to mention the motives of the Chinese, Russians and others who are going along with this outrage. Even the head of the Council on Foreign Relations had strongly urged the US NOT to get involved, as did US Defense Secretary Robert Gates. I am thankful, at least, that BO did not get any consent from Congress; but that’s small comfort. Your favorite, Sarah Palin, as well as John McCain, a man I heavily backed in the last election, have been cheering on the venture. It is absolute madness and, as you said, VERY dangerous concerning Israel. The only thing that makes sense to me, is that Obama and a small clique around him (NOT the CFR) ae determined to brazenly throw their weight around — for the unadaultered purpose of demonstrating their invincibility. Binyamin Netanyahu understands that language very well, and bows to it. Obama may be the “little horn” of Daniel 7 after all, and we all may be in for some awful times.
