The Telegraph reported on Wednesday that dozens of Iranian-made Shahed-136 drones that had been launched on Monday by Russia in a long-range blitz on city centers across Ukraine were shot down by Ukraine’s air defense systems (Hopeless ‘kamikaze’ drones show Vladimir Putin’s war machine is floundering), and many were destroyed before hitting their targets.
Now it appears that Ukraine has been relying on Israeli intelligence in shooting down those drones.
Russia shot more than 80 cruise missiles and 24 drones at Ukraine’s cities––including the capital Kyiv––during the morning rush hour on Monday.
The Telegraph cited Ukraine’s intelligence services’ claim that Russia has ordered 2,400 of the drones, designed to hover over their targets for hours before launching suicide strikes. Now those drones appear ineffective, immobile, easily detectable, and unable to select and destroy sensitive military targets.

The New York Times on Thursday offered an insight as to why Ukraine has been so successful against those drones, which Iran had used successfully in the past against targets in the Middle East (Western Nations Rush Defensive Systems to Ukraine to Counter Russian Missiles).
Ukraine asked Israel to sell it air defense systems such as the Iron Dome and the longer-range Barak 8 systems, but Israel has not agreed, given Russia’s ominous military presence only a few miles north of Israel’s border with Syria. But the Times cited a senior Ukrainian official, speaking on the condition of anonymity, who revealed that Israel gave Ukraine intelligence about those Iranian drones and a private Israeli company is providing Ukraine with satellite imagery of Russian troop positions.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky thanked in an evening video message Wednesday the Western allies’ assistance to Ukraine in protecting the skies, calling it “one of the most significant humanitarian tasks for Europe of our time.”
“First of all, they discussed providing our country with anti-aircraft and anti-missile defense systems,” Zelensky added. “The more audacious and cruel Russian terror becomes, the more obvious it is to the world that helping Ukraine to protect the sky is one of the most important humanitarian tasks for Europe of our time.”
Here’s a thought: we noted earlier on Thursday that 13 NATO countries declared on Thursday their urgent interest in procuring the Arrow 3, a product of Israel’s Aerospace Industries (Terrified of Putin, 13 NATO Countries Want Israel’s Arrow 3). Now it appears that Russia’s other weapon against Ukraine and the West, the Iranian Shahed-136 drones, is also being thwarted, courtesy of Israeli know-how. With that in mind, how long before Russia realizes who contributes so effectively to its defeat in Ukraine?

@Ted
I could not agree more.
Was this not the basis upon which the Kosovo question was settled and which later was affirmed by the World Court as being a legitimate basis of separation of Kosovo from Serbia despite the use of foreign great powers forcing the outcome? Once again, the Kosovo model provides a significant precedent from which to resolve the matter.
Let us forget about the history of the conflict and just consider this question. Is sovereignty the highest value or the right to self determination the highest?
“‘All peoples have the right of self-determination. By virtue of that right they freely determine their political status and freely pursue their economic, social and cultural development’.”
Given the history and demography of the regions in question, I believe in this case the right of self-determination must take precedence.
Peloni, I think it’s up to the people of Ukraine, Georgia, Moldova, Romania, Bulgaria, Hungary, Czechia, Slovakia, Poland and Germany to decide whether Russia has been justified in declaring its zone of “Lebensraum”. They all know first-hand, what it’s like to suffer under Russian hegemony.
Russia is a bully, and always has been. The only way to stop someone like that, is to punch the tar out of him. The fight is on, right now, for whatever reason, and I will cheer for the underdog.
@Michael
I do. When the status quo changes, the strategic balance changes and geopolitical adjustments are made as a consequence. This occurred in 2008 with the declaration on future membership of Ukraine and Georgia, in 2014 with the Maidan coup, and most recently with the refusal to come to terms over Ukraine while expanding NATO to Sweden and Finland. Syria was a response to the US manufactured Arab Spring which destabilize the Middle East creating more than one failed state while also subsidizing Al Quida with illegal arms sales, leading to massive waves of immigration.
When the strategic environment changes, every geopolitical leading power will respond. Why do you think Russia has moved closer to China. Why do you think India and Saudi Arabia have moved closer to Russia? Why do you think the US threatened war in Cuba in the ’60’s? When strategic parameters change to the disadvantage of great powers, any great power will react, so long as they are not a dead man of Europe type of great power, which Russia is decidedly not. In fact, it is well that Russia has tried on multiple occasions – Bucharest (’08), Minsk 1, Mink 2, the German proposal (Jan 2022), Istanbul – to make clear the threat that she perceived from the changed strategic positioning of NATO as it has grown and continues to grow like a cancer across Europe to Russia’s border. The US would not accept these types of actions in the ’60’s when there were 90 miles of sea between the proposed Soviet expansion and US territory, and in the ’60’s there missile speeds were far less impressive than they are today.
Provocation was always an easy thing for NATO to have avoided. They just chose to do otherwise.
Hi, Tanna. The last time I drove on the middle of the road, I sideswiped a Lincoln Continental 😮
Michael,
I’m surprised a man of your intelligence has not seen through the west / nato/usa media lies. I hope you got your shot!
There are many sides to this story. I waste to many hours trying to follow all the happenings in this world gone mad. I should be out working. However, I think between the extremes is the truth. That’s the middle of the road for you NASCAR fans.
Listen to the link and get another perspective. Nothing happens without God’s hand in it.

Peloni,
Do you really believe the West has “provoked” Russia into invading Georgia, Moldova and the Ukraine, and meddling in Syria? The crocodile will still eat you, no matter how many friends you feed him.
Interesting. Israel is certainly helping; but Putin’s biggest enemy is Vladimir Putin. He cannot defeat the West; he has only one weapon — nukes — which he CANNOT use without killing himself. He may go down as one of history’s greatest idiots.
Israel should help Russia against the Ukrainian neo-Nazis.
If this report is true, there will be a consequence for Israeli involvement in the Ukraine war. Actually even if the report is false, the report might trigger Russia’s response, nonetheless. This is very concerning.
