  1. With regard to the current situation vis a vis Libya, Turkey and Israel: Turkey is on the verge of complete economic collapse, and Erdogan’s tenure in office doesn’t look very solid. No wonder Libyan politicians no longer see Turkey as a viable ally and are looking for a new one. At least when compared to Turkey’s, Israel’s economy and military capabilities seem far stronger.

  2. Libyan political and military leaders are definitely seeking some sort of alliance with Israel. But I don’t think this has anything to do with the supposed vast power of the Mossad. That is a myth connected with the larger myth of vast Jewish power. The Mossad is only playing a diplomatic role in these Israeli-Libyan negotiations. The Mossad has long been used for diplomacy with countries that feel uncomfortable with having open diplomatic relations with Israel, which are conducted by diplomats employed by Israel’s foreign ministry and are very public. Countries that are not ready for that due to domestic opposition, but still feel they need to have a relationship with Israel, naturally prefer to hold these meetings between intelligence officers acting as diplomats rather open formal diplomatic relations, which are conducted by diplomats who are public figures.

This does not mean that the Mossad has vast power, but only that they are often used as unofficial diplomats by the Israeli government when some discression is desired by foreign governments. The Mossad people have made good alternative diplomats. But their cloak and dagger accomplishments in recent years have been exaggerated.

The Eichman kdnapping was a long time ago. Besides, I have come accross evidence that the Argentinian government knew all about Israel’s kidnapping plans, was eager to get Eichman out of Argentina because he was meddling in Argentinian politics, and so gave the Mossad all the information they needed to “kidnap” him and made sure that no Argentinian policman were around when the Israelis snatched him.

Some of Eichman’s surviving relatives, who still live in Argentina, have told a Geman researcher that the document Eichman signed on the plane to Israel after he was captured, saying that he had agreed to go to Israel voluntarily to face trial, was truthful. According to these anonymous sources, Eichman knew the Israelis would hang him, but saw a public trial as a way to clear his name and vindicate in the eyes of public opinion in Germany and in the German exile community in Argentina.Argentina. It is noteworthy that while inprisoned in Israel, Eichman compiled a 900 page memoir seeking to defend and justify his actions. He had been attempting to put together such a memoir for many years in Argentina, but it was only in his Israeli jail cell, where the Israelis allowed him access to an unlimited number of books to prepare his defense, that he found the time to write his memoirs. He also was able to defend his actions at length on the witness stand.

Thus in the Eichman trial, everyone seemed to be using it for their own purposes. The Israelis were able to educate world opinion about the realities of the Holocaust, as well as educating the younger generation born in Israel who had not endured the hell of Europe and often did not know all that much about it. Eichman got his chance to vindicate himself in the minds of Nazi sympathizers and ex-Nazis in both Germany and Argentina, which was a project he had already been working on for years. And Argentina freed itself from a major public relations embarrassment. The Mossad’s cloak-and-dagger capabilities did not play a major role.
