Op-ed: It’s neither Israel’s stand towards terror, nor the fact that it won’t give up all lands claimed by the Palestinians. The real reason for the growing hatred towards the Jewish state is pure jealousy.
Like many of us, I also realized several years ago that the anti-Semitism in most European countries was not diminishing but rather the exact opposite: It was increasingly growing. I asked myself what was the reason for this phenomenon, which basically has no reason, especially considering the fact that the continent’s large Jewish communities no longer exist.
While the high percentage of Muslims in many European countries spurs anti-Semitism and possibly adds to it, it is only a marginal part of the hatred towards Jews—a “traditional” phenomenon which is hundreds of years old.
As part of my many trips to the “old continent” for lectures and congresses, I decided to try to investigate why the old anti-Semitism was raising its head again. And indeed, following hundreds of conversations with state leaders and simple people—in France, Germany, Switzerland, Austria and other countries—I started understanding the main reason.
It’s neither Israel’s stand towards Palestinian terror, nor the fact that Israel (on the day it finds more serious partners than Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas) will not give up on all the lands claimed by the Palestinians but will defend its interests (does Switzerland really care if the Palestinians receive or don’t receive a few more kilometers near Hebron?) The real reason for the hatred towards Israel, which is a clear expression of anti-Semitism, is jealousy.
For some reason, the majority of “(still) free and (still) democratic” countries envy the rapid and inconceivable success of the Jewish state in many diverse areas. How is it possible that within just 69 years, Israel has turned from a desert and wilderness into one of the most developed, advanced, modern and beautiful countries in the world? How is it possible that the Jewish state—which has basically not experienced a single day of calm, serenity and peace since its establishment—is way ahead of most of the countries of the world in the technologies it develops? How has it become a leader in inventing agricultural techniques and methods and devices for fighting different diseases?
I could have gone on and on. I could have mentioned, for example, the Air Force and our intelligence community (the Mossad), which are considered the best in the world in their field. Or I could have mentioned the fact—and I say this with a lot of grief—that our army is No. 1 in all aspects.
It’s true that the teaching method in our schools is not among the most advanced, but Israeli students usually reach the first places in most science “Olympiads.” In the past 20 years, eight Israelis have received Nobel Prizes, right after the United States and Britain. The prestigious prize laureates per capita is among the highest in the world. And how many Germans, Austrians, French or Swiss have won?
Here’s the main reason for the rise in anti-Semitic incidents—jealousy and envy. In this atmosphere, the old and banal argument about the Jews’ “financial control” and deceit is being repeated. Deceit? There are of course big swindlers among the Jews, just like in every other country in the world. So what?
Like everyone, we also make mistakes on different levels. But a mistake like the one made by the city of Berlin, for example, is unique: In 2011, they were about to open an airport that was supposed to be one of the most advanced and beautiful airports in the world. Named after Nobel Prize laureate Willy Brandt, the airport is still under construction, five years after it was originally planned to open. According to experts, if it ever does open, it won’t happen before 2019. Dozens, if not hundreds, of mistakes were made in the airport’s construction, which costs billions more than the initial calculation. It turns out that even the great and developed Germany is not immune to mistakes.

Everything you say is true but you couch it in extreme isolationist terms which I don’t believe is the ultimate aim of The Almighty. You seem to dismiss the calling of the Jewish people and the reason for the preservation of their uniqueness being to be the light unto the nations. Surely Hashem loves all his creations and all of humanity and has set aside his “chosen” to be a nation of priests and a holy nation for the laity consisting of the nations. That we fail in that task causes the laity to lash out against that priestly class for failing to live up to their calling. Thus anti-semitism. You don’t address this explanation directly and instead fall back to your familiar refrain of castigating Jews who remain in the diaspora.

Good article. Two more:
Muslim Anti-semitism: The Jews rejected Mohammad.
First place attempts to assimilate was met by racial anti-semitism was Spain before Germany.
In Pre-Christian world – anti-semitism stemmed from Jews refusal to bow to down before foreign Gods or potentates. Or sometimes from personal vendettas that turned in to collective blame.
In modern world, you have people who hate Jews for opposite reasons almost in the same breath. Traditional leftist anti-semites often have Jewish friends or loved ones whom they exempt. Right wing anti-semites tend to have a gut revulsion in the presence of Jews. That’s the main difference.

No I opt for the theological reasons all others are manifestations of the Jews rebelling collectively against G-d’s plan for human kind thru his surrogates the Jews.
G-d has deigned, through the Hebrew Bible (the first five books of which are collectively denominated as the Torah), to reveal to us His Eternal Attributes, His Message and that which He expects of us as His Chosen People. G-d said of and to us:
“… So said HaShem: My first-born Son is Israel.” (Exodus 4:22); and: “… My Legions — My People — the Children of Israel …” (Exodus 7:4); and: “For you are a holy people to HaShem, your God; HaShem, your God, has chosen you to be for Him a treasured people above all peoples that are on the face of the Earth. Not because you are more numerous than all the peoples did HaShem desire you and choose you, for you are the fewest of all the peoples. Rather, because of HaShem’s love for you and because He observes the oath that He swore to your forefathers did He take you out with a strong hand and redeem you from the house of slavery — from the hand of Pharaoh, king of Egypt. (Deuteronomy 7:6-8); and: “For you are a holy people to HaShem, your God, and HaShem has chosen you for Himself to be a treasured people from among all the peoples on the face of the Earth.” (Deuteronomy 14:2); and: “And HaShem has distinguished you today to be for Him a treasured people,

“Behold! It is a nation that will dwell in solitude and not be reckoned among the nations.”(Num. 23:9)
[It is] G-d’s decree that the Jewish People must remain apart, separate from the nations, so as to be cut off from their abominations, and their alien culture. Toward that end, G-d established for the Jewish People a special land of their own, the Land of Israel. There and there alone they would live lives of G-dliness and build a perfect state and society based on Torah and holiness. The concept of a Jewish People alone is tied to the concept that G-d is alone. G-d is alone and cannot be compared or equated to anything else. He is One and Unique, as it says (Deut. 4:35), “You are the ones who have been shown, so that you will know that the L-rd is G-d and there is none besides Him”; and, “To Him Who alone does great wonders” (Ps. 136:4). Just so, the Jewish People are alone, set apart from all the nations, as it says (Lev. 20:26), “I have separated you from the nations,” and, “It is a people that shall dwell alone and shall not be reckoned among the nations” (Num. 23:9).

If I understand you correctly you are advancing the Haman theory of anti-semitism which amounts to the “Outsider” explanation of the classic 6 in your post no. 20 which is refuted as shown in attempts to assimilate that too are rejected.
So I maintain that the solution remains as I’ve set it out in post no. 13. Any comment?
Based upon the totality of evidence, it is clear that proto-Antisemitism emerged in biblical times as Gentile revulsion towards Jewish success — a revulsion born of Envy. Since this revulsion violated the 10th Commandment (“Do not covet …” — Exodus 20:14 and Deuteronomy 5:18), it not only lacked any moral foundation, but it constituted a Sin against G-d. Consequently, during the last two millennia, Christianity and Islam each added a theological gloss to this revulsion in order to provide a “moral” justification for this oldest of hatreds. So, Christianity (via its New Testament) declared that the Jews murdered God (in the person of Jesus); and Islam (via its Hadith) declared that the Jews serially attempted to murder the final Prophet of God (in the person of Mohammed). However, the claims of deicide and attempted vaticide both mask the real reason that the purveyors of these religions taught hatred and contempt for the Jewish communities within their midst, namely, the remarkable fact that the Jewish people, after having rejected the supersessionist foundations of both religions, and despite being periodically persecuted on account thereof, continued to thrive and excel — not only economically, but also intellectually and politically. This enviable success, especially in the face of such daunting adversity, inevitably enraged the adherents of each “True Religion”, which inevitably triggered the next round of persecution. Moreover, since 1948, in reaction to the post-Holocaust delegitimization of theological Jew-hatred in much of the Western World (i.e., the World’s liberal democracies), Jew-haters (including self-loathing Jews mired in apostasy) have added an ideological gloss, expressed as hatred for the State of Israel (qua the Jewish State, representing the sovereign Jew among the nations), to this revulsion in order to provide a replacement (or, for those still wedded to theological Jew-hatred, an additional) “moral” justification for this oldest of hatreds. However, notwithstanding the mutating “moral” justifications for Antisemitism, since the end of the biblical period, the basic mechanisms favored by the Gentile World for imposing retribution against the Jewish people for being too successful have hardly changed since the Days of the Torah.
Yet, in a grand application of the principle of mida k’neged mida (measure for measure), every kingdom, empire and nation that has initially welcomed but has subsequently persecuted the Jewish people has, in turn, suffered the devastation of the prosperous economy and/or military prowess and/or essential infrastructure that were made possible, in part, by the industry and ingenuity of the Jewish communities within its midst. This is in accordance with God’s Declaration to Abraham: “I will bless those who bless you, and him who curses you, I will curse . . .” (Genesis 12:3), as subsequently reiterated by the Gentile Prophet Balaam with respect to the Israelites: “. . . Those who bless you are blessed, and those who curse you are cursed.” (Numbers 24:9).
Anti-Semitism began in the Purim Narative:
Who Is Haman?
Before I come to Haman and his doctrine there still is one point to clear up concerning Mordechai. Mordechai saves the life and the throne of Ahasuerus. He discovers a plot against the king, and since the story is told in romantic-poetic and not in political-historical terms, we are not told whether this is an imperialist, fascist, or Trotskyist-Maoist plot. Or perhaps it was a plot instigated by Haman himself?
No clearer, more succinct definition of anti-Semitism has been formulated since. All the three elements are there: Desire for domination, particularism, disloyalty. But Haman was not only the first anti-Semite theoretician, he was also a man of action who submitted to his king, and to all the kings and rulers throughout the ages, the model plan for the FINAL SOLUTION — this time not in Berlin and not at the Kremlin, but at Shushan: “To destroy, to slay, and to annihilate all Jews, young and old, women and children, and plunder their goods” ( Esther 3:13).
There are those that for years have been rightfully denouncing the use of the term “anti-Semitism” on the grounds that there are ultra-Semites who are among the worst enemies of the Jews. and the ultra-Aryans who are the friends of the semitic Arabs who provided they help them get rid of the Jews. The alternative term is HAMANISM, after the father of the anti-Jewish doctrine and of the final solution. Legend has it that Waisata, the last of Haman’s ten sons, managed to tear himself away from the scaffold and escape. It was created to account for the fact that despite the hanging of the original Haman and his sons his descendants keep cropping up again time after time, in every country and in every age.
After the famous doctors’ trial Stalin had intended to exile all the Russian Jews to Siberia — dispatching them to their certain death, but it was his death that intervened.
By the way, it was on Purim that Stalin died. Be that as it may — the sages of the Talmud expressly provided that one cannot and should not rely on a miracle.
@ yamit82:
Right on and I’ve told you what the reason for anti-semitism is. See post 13 above and be enlightened.
It has been said that the history of almost all of the Jewish holidays can be summed up succinctly: “They wanted to kill us; we won. Let’s eat.” Why has anti-Semitism been so pervasive in so many countries, in so many time periods and for so many reasons? (One begins to wonder. Perhaps there is something wrong with the Jews and Judaism? After all, there is an old Yiddish saying — “If one person calls you a donkey, ignore him; if two people call you a donkey, buy a saddle.”)
Between the years 250 CE and 1948 CE – a period of 1,700 years – Jews have experienced more than eighty expulsions from various countries in Europe – an average of nearly one expulsion every twenty-one years. Jews were expelled from England, France, Austria, Germany, Lithuania, Spain, Portugal, Bohemia, Moravia and seventy-one other countries.
Historians have classified six explanations as to why people hate the Jews:
Economic — “We hate Jews because they possess too much wealth and power.”
Chosen People — “We hate Jews because they arrogantly claim that they are the chosen people.”
Scapegoat — “Jews are a convenient group to single out and blame for our troubles.”
Deicide — “We hate Jews because they killed Jesus.”
Outsiders, — “We hate Jews because they are different than us.” (The dislike of the unlike.)
Racial Theory — “We hate Jews because they are an inferior race.”
As we examine the explanations, we must ask — Are they the causes for anti-Semitism or excuses for Anti-Semitism? The difference? If one takes away the cause, then anti-Semitism should no longer exist. If one can show a contradiction to the explanation, it demonstrates that the “cause” is not a reason, it is just an excuse. Let’s look at some contradictions:
Economic — The Jews of 17th- 20th century Poland and Russia were dirt poor, had no influence and yet they were hated.
Chosen People — a) In the late 19th century, the Jews of Germany denied “Choseness.” And then they worked on assimilation. Yet, the holocaust started there. b) Christians and Moslems profess to being the “Chosen people,” yet, the world and the anti-Semites tolerate them.
Scapegoat — Any group must already be hated to be an effective scapegoat. The Scapegoat Theory does not then cause anti-Semitism. Rather, anti-Semitism is what makes the Jews a convenient scapegoat target. Hitler’s ranting and ravings would not be taken seriously if he said, “It’s the bicycle riders and the midgets who are destroying our society.”
Deicide — a) the Christian Bible says the Romans killed Jesus, though Jews are mentioned as accomplices (claims that Jews killed Jesus came several hundred years later). How come the accomplices are persecuted and there isn’t an anti-Roman movement through history? b) Jesus himself said, “Forgive them [i.e., the Jews], for they know not what they do.” The Second Vatican Council in 1963 officially exonerated the Jews as the killers of Jesus. Neither statement of Christian belief lessened anti-Semitism.
Outsiders — With the Enlightenment in the late 18th century, many Jews rushed to assimilate. Anti-Semitism should have stopped. Instead, for example, with the Nazis came the cry, in essence: “We hate you, not because you’re different, but because you’re trying to become like us! We cannot allow you to infect the Aryan race with your inferior genes.”
Racial Theory — The overriding problem with this theory is that it is self-contradictory: Jews are not a race. Anyone can become a Jew – and members of every race, creed and color in the world have done so at one time or another.
Every other hated group is hated for a relatively defined reason. We Jews, however, are hated in paradoxes: Jews are hated for being a lazy and inferior race – but also for dominating the economy and taking over the world. We are hated for stubbornly maintaining our separateness – and, when we do assimilate – for posing a threat to racial purity through intermarriages. We are seen as pacifists and as warmongers; as capitalist exploiters and as revolutionary communists; possessed of a Chosen-People mentality, as well as of an inferiority complex. It seems that we just can’t win.
Now we know what are NOT the reasons for anti-Semitism.
@ Yidvocate:
If it is its an inocuous kind:
“Mormonism teaches that its adherents are either direct descendants of the House of Israel or adopted into it. As such, Mormons regard Jews as a covenant people of God and hold them in high esteem. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church), the largest church in Mormonism, is philo-Semitic in its doctrine.
Studies have shown that American Jews generally view Mormons more positively than any other religious group,[1][2] despite often voting on opposite ends of the political spectrum. Explanations for Jews’ high regard for Mormons is speculated to come both from their solidarity with other historically abused religious minorities and the philo-semitism of Mormon theology.[3]”
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Judaism_and_Mormonism
I knew that they call non-mormons, “gentiles.” ‘Course the only reason they were “abused” is because they used to practice polygamy like the Mohammedans still do. Still, they never murdered anybody and keep to themselves. They used to send out polite missionaries. They think drinking coffee is a sin. I once played a concert in a Mormon church across from Lincoln Center. The sanctuary was separated from the basketball court by a curtain and you weren’t allowed to bring coffee into the building. Otherwise, they seemed normal enough.

Gentlemen, with all due respect you are all wrong. It’s not jealousy or any of the other six classical explanations that in fact contradict each other that is the cause of this ancient and persistent hatred unlike any other the world has experienced.
There is only one people of the earth that are identified as the “Chosen People”. Does one ever consider, chosen for what exactly? The Torah makes it clear: to be a light unto the nations. The light being the Jewish nations adherence to Torah and observance of mitzvot. Our abject failure to adhere to this calling is the sole cause of anti-semitisim. A spiritual and pre-conscious force through which the nations lash out at the Jews for their failure to shine the light.
Really very simple.
The brothers Jacob and Esau are the archetypes of the confrontation. Esau feigned piety especially in the presence of his father Isaac. Esau walked around dressed like the Pope but was actually a liar, a thief, a rapist and a murderer. His mother rebuking him prompted the original anti-Semitism of Esau, the forebear of the European nations.
Actually, there is another form of anti-semitism I haven’t seen discussed. It is the predominant form on the Left, especially the J street crowd: “Political Correctness.”
In pre-war Hungary there was a saying — which I learned at my parents’ knee, so to speak — an anti-semite is somebody who hates Jews more than necessary.

A couple were listing of anti-semitic incidents in the ancient (pre-Christian, even pre-Roman) world.
And one was about Marr and the development of the term.
@ Sebastien Zorn:
Oh by the way I know all about that drek about how the term Anti-Semitism came to be….something to do with a geezer named Wilhelm Marr I think. That’s a nothing on the scale of what I’m talking about. I just didn’t bother mentioning it before, but since you think it’s important enough to mention..I’m responding.
You know the old Shakspear triviality..”A rose by any other name would smell as sweet..”
Jealousy is a generic term. In each instance of anti-Semitism, the Jews have rejected prime concepts for which they were ultimately persecuted. Assimilationists know that they have to “go-over” to the other side, convert, fit in, go along to get along, kow-tow, turn actively against their brothers, or at least feign indifference to their fate. Only then will they become acceptable humans to the molten masses.
But real Jews cannot bring themselves to believe it is a sin to reject cultic fads even if they have stuck around for a few thousand years. There is no logic in following Jesus, no striving for universal justice in following Allah, no possible search for truth by accepting Marxist presumptions, no family life in cosmopolitan snobbery.
In this sense we deserve what we get – jealousy. But in our suffering, which we do not relish, we gift humanity a balance between empathy and rationality, existential sadness and joie de vivre. We remain in awe of intelligence, but insist on common sense. We look to the future by welding it to the past.
@ Sebastien Zorn:
As you see from my just now post, I sent a peroration of profundity which has been mislaid by WordPress, so I won’t go into it again. I’ll merely say that the examples you quote, are not wrong, but in error. They are all politically inspired, the Catholic Church persecutions are all Jew Hate for religious and other reasons.
I suggested that you read Joshua Trachtenberg’s “The Devil and the Jews”, also Solomon Zeitlin’s “The Rise and Fall of The Judean State”, both of which deal with Jew hate from it’s earliest beginnings, which began BEFORE Christianity became the Roman State religion, but after it attained influence. It became official in 380 under Emperor Theodosius. Zeitlin quotes State Laws issued against Jews as far back as the mid 3rd century, around 250.

No, much earlier. Some examples: Pharaoh, Antiochus, Haman, Ptolemy, Flaccus, The Alexandrian Pogrom, Hadrian, Tiberius.
See here: http://www.livius.org/am-ao/antisemitism/antisemitism01.html *
and here:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_antisemitism
* the first article — while containing valuable information — uses the term anti-semitism to apply as well to Christian attitudes towards Muslims during the Crusades. This is inaccurate. While it is true that crusaders massacred both Jews and Muslims, the term anti-semitism, as such, was coined by the co-founder of the anti-semitic movement, which immediately preceded the Nazis, to mean hatred of Jews. Muslim apologists have recently tried to effectively remove the word from the dictionary by absurdly saying that it means hatred of people from the Middle East which is meaningless since there is no such thing and the main source of anti-semitism in the world today comes from Muslims. During the Shoah, the Muslims played a support role for the European anti-semites. Now the roles are reversed.
Anti-Semitism began with the Catholic Church, even before it was organised, when the so-called Christians (who were really offshoot Jews). to take any heat away from them, pointed to the Jewish Jews. (
Probably from the time of Bar-Cocheba, who’s letters show that they wouldn’t support him and he ordered them put in chains…)
Of course the Jews were in trouble enough through their Messianic Wars against the Romans which stubbornly refused to go completely away even after eventual heavy defeats. The country was in turmoil really from the time of Herod, to after Hadrian, that is nearly 150 years..
And they were conscious that they had to recall Serverus and his legions from Britain, and that the high point of the Empire then began to recede, caused by the tremendous struggle the Jews made against the Romans and the forces needed to fight the War and subsequent constant military occupation.
When the Church was organised, the REAL anti-Semitism began, and has not ceased since, every generation seeming to have imbibed the Jew hatred or antipathy from birth. Jealousy is part of it, and was long before Israel was reconstituted.
Anti-semitism is a hallucinatory illness. It picks its pretexts — often opposites — but has no reasons.
When we are admired for our accomplishments and have genuine power and influence, we find allies and our enemies back off. When we put ourselves down, our enemies, rather than cutting us some slack, walk through the door of our expectations and offer to do it for us. And to us. Such “self-criticism” only offers the illusion of control.
Moreover, to say we are hated for being admirable is as dangerous as its opposite; Because it is only natural to want to cease being whatever it is that makes us hated. Not that it will work, in any case.
Our biggest enemy is demoralization. We must identify and combat this phenomenon in all of its endlessly mutating forms and stand by one another.
We are one people.
