King Abdullah II is now in limbo

Ted Belman.  What follows below are recent tweets from Mudar Zahran and Abed Almaala, both of whom I brought to Israel to participate in my conference on the Jordan Option in Oct 2017.

Abedalelah Almaala is one of the leaders of a  Bedouin  clan in Jordan..

I joined a group of about 25 Arab leaders in a zoom like conversation and everybody was very candid.  Mudar and Abed stood strong and kept reiterating our agreed solution.  Some had hopes of A and B being confederated with the New Jordan.. For this to happen A and B would have to be made into a state.  I was adamant that Israel will never agree to such a state. I told them to stop the resistance and recognize Israel as the state of the Jews.  Stop discussing how to divide the land and concentrate on dividing the Arab population. Of the two million Arabs in Judea and Samaria, you accept 1.5 million of them and we will accept the other 500,000.  But all Arabs west of the Jordan R must be friendly. Of course we will help build Jordan’s economy so that it could absorb them.

Then they said the King had been removed, I noted for them that meant that the Hashemites enjoyed a one hundred year rule. They were quite mindful of that.

I will be meeting with a group of them from Hebron next week.

The major and final sign of the fall of the Hashemites’ rule in Jordan is the non-participation of Abdullah II in the virtual Davos conference, which ended today. Abdullah II’s lack of participation means a lot in politics

For the fifth time, Abdullah II is prevented from participating in international conferences. The Davos Economic Conference, held via the Internet, rejects the participation of Abdullah II for this year 2022, which was held today. The rule of the Hashemites and their bread ended in Jordan.

It has been legally proven that the last foreign minister, Abdullah II, is a fool, a slob, and a politically stupid par excellence. His recent visit to Washington proved that. It is a privilege to be praised.

  1. This is story about the king in the most recent Jordan Times is interesting for a number of reasons. It seems that the king is under pressure to democratize by allowing more political parties. Perhaps he was let out of the political doghouse in return for authorizing some degree of democratization.

It is also interesting that it mentions that the chief court officer, named, “attended the meeting.” Why mention this, unless is a signal to readers that the king is being “supervised” to make sure that he sticks to the agreed-upon script in his meeting with these “youth activists.” One would think that the presence of a member of the royal court at a meeing like this would be taken for granted and would require no mention. Notice also that it mentions that the Crown Prince was also present. This is a signal that the line of succession remains intact.

King meets with youth activists, calls for platform-based, not individual-based political parties

AMMAN — His Majesty King Abdullah on Monday reiterated that youth have an important role in political modernisation, calling for providing safeguards to enable their engagement in political life.

During a meeting at Al Husseiniya Palace with politically and socially active youth from various governorates, King Abdullah reaffirmed support for empowering youth and women to enhance their political and partisan engagement, according to a Royal Court statement.

At the meeting, attended by HRH Crown Prince Hussein, His Majesty called for forming platform-based national parties that address political, economic, and social concerns, and where youth have a strong voice, adding, “we want platform-based parties, not individual-based parties”.

The King said there are no concerns regarding moving forward with political reform, stressing the need for integration between political, economic, and administrative modernisation, in order to reflect positively on citizens’ lives.

Speaking at the meeting, Crown Prince Hussein said alleviating unemployment among youth is a priority, calling for encouraging young people to enrol in vocational training and technical education programmes, which would enable them to join the labour market.

His Royal Highness pointed to a comprehensive strategy to revamp and institutionalise the vocational and technical education sector, which will include developing curricula, improving training programmes, and advancing the role of youth centres across the Kingdom.

For their part, the attendees stressed the importance of educating young people on partisan action mechanisms, as well as encouraging them to accept different opinions and leanings, adding that they look forward to participating actively in forming parties and drafting their platforms.

In addition, they highlighted the role of decentralisation in raising awareness of the impact of participation in decision-making, which reflects positively on the economy and the distribution of development gains, said the statement.

A number of the attendees spoke about their projects and initiatives in service of the community and in a bid to enhance active citizenship.

Royal Hashemite Court Chief Yousef Issawi attended the meeting.

  2. @Edgar
The discussion included people who wanted a state for Palestine and a confederation with Jordan. I emphatically said no way. I wanted to shift the conversation from dividing the land to dividing the population. I selected 500,000 thinking that it will raise the percentage of Arab citizens from 20% to 25%. We can live with that if the Arabs end the resistance and recognize Israel as the state of the Jews. Currently just under 100,000 Palestinians work in Israel or for Israelis. With their families they could account for up to 300,000. So I personally would accept such a split if it was accompanied with the end of resistance and the recognition of Israel as a Jewish state.

The also said that the New Jordan will be building a city of 500,000 near their airport financed by the UAE to serve as its capital.

I am now preparing a Webinar on the Jordan Option, Chaired by me, in which the speakers would include Mudar, Abed, a Palestinian from the territories and a rep of the Yesha communities and maybe an MK member. Everything will be discussed.

I will set it up as a series of weekly meetings.

  3. @ TED-

I devoutly hope that your offer to accept 500.000 Arab Jew-Haters is not borne out by future results. I don’t know how you can even contemplate such a thing, if the opportunity comes to get rid of them all.. Why sweeten their pot by offering. Israel always gets into trouble by “offering”. The whole deal would still be just the same whether Jordan took 1.5 mill or 2 mill.

I hope your offer was at the Jordan Option assembly in 2017 and not lately.

They have the space to absorb 10 million and more.

  4. I notice that the most recent issue of the Jordan Times has an article about King Abdullah and a picture of him, showing him visiting some small city in Jordan in order to help the people with their problems.

When a few days ago I had discovered no mention of Abdullah on the JT front page and no photograph of him, something that I had never seen before on the JT, I concluded he was in political trouble. I still think that was the case. But Abdullah has a pattern of talking his way out of political trouble after narrowly escaping plots to overthrow him. He is a professional survivor.

One possible explanation of his ability to hang on is that many jordanians, particularly those in positions of authority, subscribe to the “devil you know is better than the devil you don’t know”
theory. Ted believes that Mudar will inevitably take power once Abdullah is gone. My own opinion is that most Jordanians do not know who or what will replace Abdullah. And most are not sure who they want to replace Abdullah. Mudar undoutedly has his followers. But there are other likely contenders–the Muslim Brotherhood, even more radical groups among the Syrian and Iraqi refugees, Iran making use of its Huthi agents, who have apparently established a foothold in Jordan. As a result, perhaps, Abdullah is able to survive each political crisis and persuade Jordan’s ruling elites to allow him to remain in office. But perhaps without much real power.

  5. Jordan Times do you guys believe analyzing it is worth much? I get that in search for actual news people want to search for it but the Jordan Times I believe has little value.

  6. @Edgar. I did not mean to say that Abdullah has been overthrown and will soon leave the country. We cannot be sure that will happen. I only meant that the recent JT issue indicates that he is in political hot water. It is too early to say whether he will be forced to abdicate and leave the country.

Abdullah’s throne has been hanging on a thread for years. He has come close to being ousted several times within the past few years. But each time he has somehow managed to pull through. He seems to be a “survivor” type of personality.

A few years ago there was a plot to overthrow him by senior militry officers and even some of his courtiers. The plotting was accompanied by large protest demonstrations that uncharacteristically the police did not try too hard to disperse. This plot was widely reported in the Arab English-language press outside Jordan. Abdullah managed to regain control at the last moment by firing his army chief of staff and chief of intelligence and replacing them with loyalists. One of these loyalists was the head of his personal bodyguard, whom he promoted to chief of staff of the army. Interestingly, he is a Circassian, not an Arab.

The JT did not report the plot in so many words. But it did acknowledge the replacement of the army chief of staff, the intelligence chief, and a few other officers.

Just last year there was a plot to overthrow him by the former crown prince, Hamza. This was reported with headlines by the JT. Maybe because the story had already leaked out to the press. Hamza was placed under house arrest. Although under arrest Hamza somehow managed to get a tweet out to London demanding that Abdullah abdicate. But he remained under house arrest until he publicly “repented” and pledged loyalty to Abdullah.

Way back in 2003, when he first ousted Hamza as crown prince, there were huge protest demonstrations in Amman.

The limited evidence that is publicly available does suggest that he is in political hot water with influential people within the regime. Whether he will manage to wriggle out of the political noose once again or go into exile is anybody’s guess.

  7. @ADAM-

On reconsideration, and your post, It seems more telling that the Jordan Times has been silent for him for so long. In fact, to facilitate him, and to save face, the report of Gantz meeting him in Amman could be a subterfuge, and they actually met wherever he is sequestered…..

Or perhaps they didn’t meet at all. The printed result of that meeting was pure political bla-bla, and contrary to what we’ve seen over the many years of Jordanian street hatred of Israel and Jews…openly encouraged by the little king.

  8. @Edgar. Yes, he did, Edgar. But what is published, or not published in the Jordan Times, a quasi-official mouthpiece of the Jordanian government, tells us more about his political standing within Jordan than his meetings with foreign officials.

We should also remember that events sometimes move very swiftly in the Middle East and elsewhere. “A few weeks” may be all that is needed to strip a head of government of his power,. And that can happen even when he is allowed to keep his office and titles as a figurehead.

  9. I just checked the Jordan Times to find out what they say he is doing. He is not even mentioned on the first page! There is a sidebar on the right hand of the screen providing links to short videos in which brief photographs and sound bites from past apprearances of Abdullah can be seen. However, not only are the links in small print, but the most recent of the videos is dated April 2021, and most date from 2019 or 2020.

Absolutely no mention on the JT front page of Abdullah’s present activities or location. No photograph of him. This is highly unusual for the JT, which is more or less the Hashemite family newspaper.

It tends to support Mudar’s claim that Abdullah and maybe the entire Hashemite clan (none of whom are mentioned on the front page) are in deep doodoo.

  10. @Ted, there have been advances in Yemen by the Saudi coalition for sure. It is not yet clear if this will be decisive I am hearing. Hopefully yes.

The Houtis still hit back by drone and missile attack against the UAE and Saudis however. Which promoted a counter attack on Sana.

  11. Mudar tweeted about Kazakhstan and the fact that Russia was now withdrawing its troops.”after completing mission of cleansing the country from the forces of globalization and after blocking the “Belt and Road” project.”

I didn’t understand this at all. I will try to understand better.

Were the riots and colour revolution that was taking place in Kazakhstan orchestrated by Soros and Friends just like BLM and Antifa were in the US. The same is going on in Ukraine. It is a precursor to acquiring power in the country Marxist style.

Russia who just issued a conservative manifesto, wanted to put a stop to it and they succeeded. Thus the tweet.

Russia’s New ‘Conservative’ Ideology To Counter Liberalism>

  12. Mudar is not tweeting much. I speak with him regularly and he tells me the emes. It seems that Abed is off the mark on much of what he says..
Bottom line is that the army is in charge and the army is being overhauled and the king is under its control. He will be fully gone within a month.

  13. GOing GOIng…..but not GONE…..Yet ! One day Rania has arrested him in Aquaba, the next day he receives Gantz in his palace in Amman…where will he turn up, next…?? Has anyone seen him hanging around Cyprus yet

I find it puzzling that Humpty-Dumpty and Rania divorced because he wanted their son, to be the Prince Regent and succeed him…Strange.-if true.??

  14. @ BEAR-

If he actually is “warming up”, then he is looking for protection. All through his tenure he has been encouraging the Jordan Arab street to vilify Israel and raising Arab hatred even more. It is now just about the most Jew-Hating country after Iran.

Seems to me that it is only a bit of political craparoo ny Gantz, to keep himself in the news..
