The Obama administration spent three years engaged in secret talks with Iran that resulted in the payment of $1.7 billion in taxpayer funds to Iran, with more future payouts likely, according to a U.S. State Department letter obtained exclusively by the Washington Free Beacon.

The payment was revealed due to an inquiry launched by Kansas Republican Congressman Mike Pompeo in January. The Washington Free Beacon report said many viewed the payment as “ransom” for Iran’s release of several American hostages.

The Obama administration did not respond to Pompeo until this week, when State Department Assistant Secretary for Legislative Affairs Julia Frifield wrote that more taxpayer-funded financial transfers are likely in order to settle decades-old Iranian legal claims against the U.S.

“We are confident that this was a good settlement for the American taxpayer,” Frifield wrote.

Iran’s legal disputes with the U.S. stem from the breakdown of a major weapons deal that was canceled following the 1979 Islamic Revolution in Iran.

Many claims are still being litigated by the Iran-U.S. Claims Tribunal at The Hague, the Washington Free Beacon report said.

“The United States is continuing to vigorously litigate these claims at the tribunal, but is also open to discussing further settlements of claims with Iran, as we have done throughout the life of the tribunal, with the aim of resolving them in furtherance of U.S. interests,” Frifield wrote.

A source familiar with the matter told the Washington Free Beacon: “When Iran releases American hostages, and then, on that same day, President Obama announces he is paying Iran $1.7 billion, Congress of course has to ask the hard questions. And when the Obama administration admits that over $1 billion in taxpayer money is going to the Iranian regime, Congress is obligated to respond. The State Department has ducked and dodged — providing a history lesson on international tribunals, focused on actions decades ago, instead of addressing dangerous misdeeds that were potentially just committed. That is suspicious.”

  1. Wow, back at it again!

    Money spent to kill Jews.

I would say that if you are aware of it, then Obama is aware of it.

The supreme ruler of Iran is getting old and senile The next generation is moving slowly away from a theocracy to a democracy.

The country of Iran is vast, and changes in its rural areas have to match with those of the city. Changes are going slowly towards democracy and normalization of relationships with the rest of the world. Those changes make Iran less interested in war and more with trade.

Obama did a good deal with Iran for the region. His war avoidance has saved Israeli lives.

I ever so much like your objectivity regarding Obama. Your objectiveness, lack of use of facts to substantiate your statements and vindictiveness are exemplary.
