    I would suggest it is about power and the impeachable trust which religious figures are automatically afforded, even moreso than other authority figures. The trust leads to opportunities, and personal character leads to the choosing to exploit these opportunities or not.

    Just a personal opinion, of course, but it seems a rational explanation.
