Clarity about the purpose and permanence of the new US tariffs would have gone a long way towards supporting business interests around the world while coping with the announcement of Trump’s tariffs. Peter Navarro provides some of this clarity in stating that it is the “non-tariff cheating [currency manipulation, fake agricultural standards, export subsidies, etc] that matters the most”. Making it clear that this issue is THE ISSUE long before the tariff announcement would have been useful, but it is being made clear now in any event.
