At this point in the game, isn’t it a little disingenuous to ask the Lebanese people to throw off the Hezbollah yoke?
No, I would agrue that it isn’t. Hezbollah has stolen their freedoms, subjugated them to Shia rule and conversion, while exploiting and robbing them of their finances and wealth. This isn’t lost on the Lebanese, but they have not the strength or means to do anything about it while Hezbollah was still in power…but the balance of power is shifted and continues to shift against Hezbollah as time passes. If the Lebanese ever want to take their country back, now IS their moment. Israel has already provided them with the sizeable step towards victory by cutting the head off Hezbollah which has held the Lebanese people in their grip over the years. So they won’t be facing the daunting task of mounting an insurrection against the Hezbollah of a month ago, but rather a much damaged, leaderless, terrified and disheartened Hezbollah which is still facing Israel on the battlefield in the south. Even now, Israel has changed its goals from pushing Hezbollah back to the Awali instead of the Litani River, while now also demanding that Hezbollah must be disarmed and disbanded as a military organization altogether.
With a 70% Muslim population, maybe they are just like the “innocent” citizens of Gaza.
Make no mistake, Lebanon is not Gaza and the Lebanese are not Gazans. Lebanon has been long abandoned by the West to their current fate of being colonized by Iran, and what makes their situation all the more daunting has been the fact that their oppressors have been significantly subsidized by the West in recent years, even as that oppression continued.
But the Lebanese are not supportive of their Hezbollah task masters, not even slightly. They know they are occupied by a foreign army, and now they have the opportunity to take part in taking their country, their liberties, their religion and their lives back. I hope they choose to do so, and I believe that sooner or later they will.
It seems to me that telling a people to “stand up and take your country back”, in a place like Lebanon, (or the US), is tantamount to calling for a civil war. What is Israel prepared to do to help the people of Lebanon to do that? Are we even sure that they want to? With a 70% Muslim population, maybe they are just like the “innocent” citizens of Gaza.
Unfortunately, Israel has been forced to deal with some (very) bad decisions they made years ago. Gaza was vacated and effectively handed over to Hamas. In Lebanon, Israel pulled out of southern Lebanon, abandoning the SLA who would have guarded their northern flank. As they say, decisions (and actions) have consequences, and Israel is now dealing with them. At this point in the game, isn’t it a little disingenuous to ask the Lebanese people to throw off the Hezbollah yoke?
