netanyahu4Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was forced to attend a Knesset plenum on Wednesday evening, after legislators invoked the “40 signature” rule. While the scheduled debate centered on the cost of living, MKs used the opportunity to challenge the prime minister on the “Jewish nationhood” bill.

Throughout the session, members of Knesset were called to order, with several opposition legislators being directed to leave the plenum by Knesset Chairman Yuli Edelstein.

Netanyahu took to the podium towards the end of the session to defend his decisions on the controversial legislation, officially defining Israel as a Jewish state, and to present the principles of his proposal. “The bill I will present will be based on Israel being a Jewish and democratic state. Israel guarantees equality of personal rights to all its citizens without discrimination based on religion, race, and gender.”

Netanyahu said the bill would be brought to a government vote on Sunday.

“Now, explain to me why you disagree. Tell me. I want to know,” Netanyahu said, as opposition legislators continued to shout their objections.

The Likud leader emphasized his support for the legislation officially defining Israel as a Jewish state was in part due to diplomatic considerations. “I oppose a bi-national state. Israel is the national state of the Jewish people and the Jewish people alone.”

“Those who praise murderers – calling them martyrs – and incite or commit acts of terror – will not receive national insurance,” Netanyahu said.

Opposition Chairman Isaac Herzog (Labor) challenged Netanyahu on several issues during his turn on the podium, going as far as to warn the sitting prime minister that his fragile coalition could dismantle, leaving Labor in a position to poach his supporters.

At the end of the session, 46 MKs supported the prime minister’s statement – 35 opposed the motion.

  1. @ danost:
The self elected supine tort, AKA supreme court, will not be swayed away from the elites appointed tasks for them.
The people must iron up and move on the sever them from that task while freely electing judges. Novel idea, not?
FREE ELECTION of Judges. In the so called “demokratiahhhh israeli” judges are secretly picked out of the bag by specially selected “arrangements committees. (va’adot mesadrot in Hebrew).
Peres and Rivlin attacking the Law: They are not attacking the Law only. They both hate Netanyahu and that flotsam stops at nothing to sabotage their targets.
Peres was, is and will be a mortal enemy of all that is Jewish.

  2. Unless the supreme anti-Torah court negates this act, this court will be obliged to decide matters on the basis of this law, not on their usual love the muslim, hate the Jew basis. Thus its long past the time to clip their wings, and if they prefer the muslims over the Jews, expel them to gaza also, even the prospect of this just might get them to behave as if on leash.

  3. People must be informed about facts regarding states religious identification. The following list is widely available, including to the lying creeps sabotaging Jewish Eretz Israel.

  4. I frankly think the principles Netanyahu outlined constitute the core of Zionism and Jewish nationhood.

I challenge the Israeli Left to show exactly what is wrong with them. It was on the basis of those principles the State Of Israel was established.

The critics of the proposed Basic Law have no problem with an Arab state but a Jewish State is apparently too controversial for them to embrace.

That’s exactly why this Basic Law is so badly needed.
