Ban Ki Moon was very good too to a point. He acknowledged the crimes of Hamas.

It is clear from these speeches, there is no cease fire any time soon. Ban Ki Moom seemed resigned to this.

    It is definitely the kind of underhanded tactic that obama kerry are capable of. If so BB should inform the Israeli public and get their support to wipe out hamas fast so that flights can resume without danger.
    What is slowing up the wars finish is the avoidance of gaza civilian casualties. However, this must be measured against the damage of impeding air travel in Israel. BB needs to inform the Israeli public if

    Do you remember that I use to suggest something similar a couple of years ago. That Israel should embrace its military prowess and USE it in its own interests in an expansionist and aggressive manner. That it should seize the Saudi oil fields and control a major portion of the world’s oil supply. I mooted that the world would accommodate to anyone providing a stable supply, except those seeking instability to jack up prices. I believe that Israel could set up vassal states in the gulf with puppet govs. Israel needs to get overtly aggressive and stop playing a defensive vassal role to the US. No one would go to war unless they are directly threatened and Israel can keep the oil flowing. Those who would go to war are already at war with Israel. A new paradigm of an imperialistic Israel, without apologies and kowtowing. Being a master rather than a slave. All those military expenses should be turned into assets and profits.

    I beleive this has been around a couple of years going back at least to pillar of defense. If you consider this idea as going back you will be much easeir able to explain strange behaviors especially of BB and Abbas. Under the current narrative the GCC is able to work with all the major sunni islamic networks of salafis and mb, keeping its paws in everything, presenting a false front of disunity and conflict, getting everyone to believe that they are not behind ISIS and that ISIS threatens them, and wielding influence on all. I beleive that often rhetoric indicates the opposite, in that it covers for the real story.

In order to get from here to there one needs to know where “here” is and where “there” is.     North and South Koreans have a better chance to live in peace and sooner or later form a unity government like the former GDR (East German) with FDR (West German) than Palestinian Arabs and Israeli’s. There are many favorable points for Israel in Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon’s speeches when compared to past UN condemnations and assertions. Given the UN’s positions on Arab-Israeli conflicts, the Secretary General has come close to Israel’s positions than before.
    Depending on what Israel could achieve in this conflict, there is possibility for more countries to take stand with Israel against Hamas now than before.
    Victory has a lot of friends. The UN and all other countries of the world should stand with Israel if they want terrorists to be defeated. Trying to equate a terrorist organization (Hamas) with a democratic and peace loving state of Israel is not only an insult to Israeli’s but to all civilized countries of the world.

    ?????? Don’t know what is outstanding but I’ll wait for the final results as you should before giving him any praise or credit. As I said on another thread we don’t really know what are Israels real war aims and BB has already agreed to ceasefire of Egypt. That was before we started to lose our boys and before the public knew about the tunnels. BB knew about them and did nothing about them since he was elected almost 6 years ago. The build up in Gaza and Hezbollah with their 100,000 accurate rockets, hundred of tunnels and underground bunkers, were built up in the main under his terms in office. We are paying a heavy price for his cowardice and incompetence all these years.

    Opening remarks to the press with the Foreign Minister of Eqypt
    Assalamu Alaikum. Good evening.

    I am very pleased to visit Egypt as again as SG and I am very much pleased to visit Egypt so soon after the inauguration of President [Abdel Fattah Al] Sisi as President of Egypt and also [Foreign] Minister [Sameh Hassan] Shokry [Selim]. We have known each other a long time and I am very pleased to work together with Minister Shokry.

    Egypt is a strong partner, traditionally, since the beginning of this Organization, and we depend a lot on Egypt. Egypt is a regional and global power in peace and security, development, and human rights. And we appreciate and commend their contribution to the United Nations’ goals and objectives.

    This time, I am visiting Egypt with a single purpose of helping Egypt’s diplomatic efforts to bring an end to this violence which is now happening in the Middle East.

    I have been in this country just a few hours, but I have had very good discussions with Minister Shokry on how the United Nations can help the Egyptian initiative to bring an end to this violence.

    I am in support of Mr. Minister, your, and President Sisi’s efforts to stop the fighting in Gaza and the rocket attacks in Israel. I am grateful for the Government of Egypt’s leadership in mediating a durable peace.

    This is a time of profound challenge in the region.

    Yet again, too many civilians, including so many children, are paying the price for the latest escalation.

    The images we see sear the soul.

    I urge all parties to rally behind collective international efforts to end the fighting. That is why I am here in Cairo.

    I carry two important messages.

    The first: The violence must stop – it must stop now.

    All sides must provide the necessary space to aid the victims, assist the wounded, and extend the relief to trapped civilians. These immediate steps should open the door to a more permanent ceasefire.

    Second, we cannot claim victory by simply returning matters to where they stood before the latest terrible bloodshed.

    Going back to the status quo ante won’t solve the problem, it will only defer it for another day.

    It will not stop the bloodshed, it will make it even worse the next time the cycle rolls over the people of Gaza and plagues the people of Israel.

    Gaza is an open wound and Band Aids won’t help.

    There must be a plan after the aftermath that allows Gaza to breathe and heal.

    Recovery and reconstruction is more needed than ever.

    The United Nations will continue to support these efforts.

    I am so proud that many UN workers, with UNRWA in the lead, [are] helping the population of Gaza under such dramatic circumstances.

    I am grateful and happy to see that you have opened the Rafah crossing for urgent humanitarian relief. I hope you will continue to open this Rafah crossing.

    The needs and demands are rising dramatically. There are now well over 80,000 Palestinians seeking life-saving shelter and relief in UNRWA schools. That is almost 5 percent of the entire population.

    Countries cannot build a future if their people must continually run for cover.

    Palestinians and Israelis deserve freedom – freedom from siege, rockets, missiles, artillery and airstrikes.

    They deserve a future of hope, peace and justice.

    I will continue to support all efforts to build that future.

    We must find answers – lasting solutions – guided by a sense of compassion and our common humanity.

    Ban Ki Moon in Qatar 20 July 2014

    20 July 2014 – The Security Council on Sunday called for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza, as Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon met with Qatar’s Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas in Doha, the first leg of a Middle East tour which aims to end the conflict.

    I will continue to press for an [immediate] ceasefire – an immediate end to the Israeli military operation in Gaza and the rocket fire by Hamas and Islamic Jihad,” Mr. Ban said earlier in the day at a press conference alongside Qatari Foreign Minister Khaled al-Attiya.

    He reiterated his demand that all sides respect international humanitarian law and put and stop the ongoing violence.

    “While I was en route to Doha, dozens more civilians, including children, have been killed in Israeli military strikes in the Shejaiyah neighborhood in Gaza,” Mr. Ban said. “I condemn this atrocious action. Israel must exercise maximum restraint and do far more to protect civilians.”

    According to media reports, at least 60 Palestinians and 13 Israeli Defence Forces were killed today in what is being called the bloodiest fighting to date in the nearly two-week offensive.

    The UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNWRA) said that 81,000 displaced people had now taken refuge in 61 UNRWA shelters in Gaza.

    “This figure far exceeds the number seeking refuge with us in the 2008/9 conflict and it is continuing to rise,” UNRWA spokesperson Chris Gunness said in an emailed statement.

    Mr. Ban and other senior UN officials have repeatedly said that the only way to avoid the cycle of violence and the perpetual insecurity in the region can be to address the root causes of the conflict.

    They have also urged a return to the negotiating table and talks for a two-State solution.

    “Israelis, but also Palestinians, need to feel a sense of security,” Mr. Ban said at today’s press conference. “Palestinians, but also Israelis, need to see a horizon of hope.”…….

    The UN chief had been studying a request by Mr. Abbas which would place Palestine under an international protection system administered by the UN, according to the UN’s top political official, Jeffrey Feltman.

    During the press conference, Mr. Ban said that he looked forward to the meeting with Mr. Abbas which would “continue our discussions and find the way to peace.”
