  1. Previous reports have said that in addition to melting drones with its laser for a “hard kill,” Drone Dome has sophisticated electronic systems that enable operators to interfere with the signals of a hostile drone and even take control of the device, bringing it to ground in a “soft kill” interception.

The above is one way. I believe if you focus the laser where the signal comes is received controlling the drone you will also disable it.

  2. @ Bear Klein That’s a great idea! An anti-drone swarm swarm. Imagine a sky full of kamakazi drones crashing into other drones…and all those explosions in the sky. It would be like the Fourth of July on steroids!

I must ask, however, how it is possible for lasers (light beams) to disrupt drone control (radio) signals. This is beyond my level of expertise.

  3. Laser’s disable drones also by disrupting control signal and do not necessarily have to burn a hole in them.

Also one theoretically but currently possible way to combat drone swarms is with counter drone swarms. Which could also be combined with an airborne laser system.

  4. One of the benefits of Laser weapons is (the hope) that they will be able to handle drone swarms. We shall see. One current drawback of laser weapon technology is that they must lock on to a target and hold there long enough to burn through or otherwise disable the target. That would seem to be a challenge. To become truly effective weapons, lasers need enough power to achieve near-instantaneous kills. Is this practical? Presumably, aggressors are already devising means to “harden” their drones/missles/bombs/projectiles against lasers. Weapons development is always a race to stay one step ahead in the contest of “measure/counter-measure”.

  5. This is an exciting technology. One point of concern would be the use of a swarm of small drones to overwhelm and neutralize the laser technology. The economical nature, ease of production, and success in the field of drone technology has made it an indispensable battlefield asset as well as a complicating aspect to all other battlefield assets. This being said, the laser technology is quite an important development and it is very good to hear that it is now apparently ready for deployment in the field.
