Despite anti-semitism always lurking the background, Jewish life and culture thrives in Europe and East Europe and Russia…and…and… I can go on and on Where Jewish Life Thrives in America
Oct 3, 2013
Forget the teeth-gnashing already occasioned by a new study on Jewish identity in the U.S. by the Pew Research Religion & Public Life Project. The only thing every generation of Jews has in common is the conviction that it will be the last. What matters for the continuity of Jewish life is quality, not quantity. And in today’s America, Jewish intellectual, cultural, spiritual and religious life is flourishing. Case in point: Beth Medrash Govoha of Lakewood, New Jersey, known as BMG or simply “Lakewood” — one of the two biggest yeshivas, or Talmudic colleges, in the history of the world.
It strenghthens the Israeli voice in the diaspora.
It strengthens assimilation.
ShyGuy, if ‘assimilation’ didn’t come about in 2000 years it isn’t about to now. There are less assimilated Jews today than there were in Moshe Rebeinu’s time 🙂
Your not on this side of the fence to see whats happening. Many Jews are returning to the fold. 2 examples. 1) A young woman who was proud as a high schooler that she was the ‘least religious’ in her group has answered the call. She is now a regular attender at shul and takes Judaism seriously and is so happy that she was given a second chance.
2) Another woman – a secular Grandma who usually only attends shul during the high holidays came to a service recently and sat with me. She gets the snub from some of the regulars but after talking to me realized that it is never too late and to ignore the ‘guilt trippers’. She and her daughter were so glad they came.
I hate to be the party pooper.
Yes, super-amazing things are invented in Israel. At the same time, so many brilliant Israeli minds are running away elsewhere and so many similar minds are not coming on Aliyah because of Israel’s stifling day-to-day economy, caused by the Israeli government’s voracious hog-like appetite for our wages – often meager – and a bureaucracy that inhibits entrepreneurship at all levels.
What you see happening in this film would be a drop in the bucket if the Israeli government would stop gorging itself more and more every year on its own citizens.
Every cloud has a silver lining 😉
Most of the brain drain is to the USA, so it’s not such a catastrophe. It strenghthens the Israeli voice in the diaspora.
