Latest Harvard-Harris Poll Shows Strong Support For Israel

Despite the spittle-flecked protesters on college campuses chanting in fascistic unison that “From the river to the sea/Palestine will be free,” which means, if properly understood, that the tiny Jewish state should disappear in order that it might be replaced by a twenty-third Arab one, despite the anti-Israel animus displayed on the nightly news and in the major newspapers such as The New York Times and The Washington Post, despite the Bidenites’ distancing themselves from Israel as it fights its fourth war for survival — the previous three being those of 1948, 1967, and 1973 — and so much attention is given to the civilian casualties in Gaza by those who fail to understand that Israel has a lower civilian-to-combatant ratio of deaths in the current war (4:3) than has been attained by any other army in the world, it turns out that the Americans, or more than four-fifths of them, support the plucky little state whose existence has never been a given.

Because of Israel’s extraordinary efforts to minimize civilian casualties, by use of an elaborate system of warnings to those in areas about to be targeted, British Colonel Richard Kemp, who commanded his country’s forces in Afghanistan, has said the “IDF most moral army in the history of warfare.” More on the latest poll of American attitudes on Israel, Hamas, and Gaza, both now and on “the day after” the war ends, can be found here: “Vast Majority of American Voters Back Israel in War Again Hamas, New Poll Reveals,” by Ben Cohen, Algemeiner,  February 28, 2024:

The vast bulk of American voters back Israel in its bid to oust Hamas from Gaza, with clear majorities expressing support for Israel’s ongoing military operations alongside opposition to a ceasefire that does not involve the release of more than 100 hostages still held captive by the terrorist group, according to a new Harvard-Harris poll released this week.

Asked whether they back Israel or Hamas more in the current conflict, 82 percent of voters chose Israel. A further 68 percent agreed that Israel was trying to avoid inflicting civilian casualties in Gaza as it seeks to eradicate Hamas from the territory.

Eighty-two percent, or more than four-fifths of Americans, support Israel over Hamas. And despite all those videos on the nightly news of wounded children in Gaza being rushed into hospitals, and the constant repetition of the Hamas-generated numbers of killed and wounded — no one can say with assurance what the real figures are, and despite the reporters who endlessly describe the “humanitarian crisis” and the“anguish” of the Gazans who “no longer have any place to escape to,” 68% of Americans haven’t bought into that narrative, and continue to believe the truth, that Israel is doing its level best to minimize civilian casualties by warning them, through messaging, leafleting, and telephoning, to leave areas (such as “northern Gaza”) that will soon become battlefields, and buildings, including apartment houses, schools, and mosques that are about to be targeted by the IDF.

Asked whether a ceasefire should be put in place, 68 percent of the respondents said that such a move should be conditional on the release of the remainder of the hostages.

A ceasefire, according to nearly 70 percent of the Americans polled, should only come about if all the Israeli hostages are released. The poll doesn’t indicate if the ceasefire is to be temporary or permanent, but the emphasis on the freeing of the hostages before all else is certainly welcome.

On the question of Israel’s military operation, 67 percent said they supported a continuing ground invasion of Gaza even when it was pointed out that they might oppose it because “1.2 million civilians have taken shelter there [in Rafah] and will be under significant risk of harm if Israel pushes forward.”

So despite the unavoidable civilian casualties that will result from fighting in and around the the city of Rafah, where 1.2 million Gazans now live, more than one million of them having sought refuge from fighting in central and northern Gaza, more than two-thirds of Americans nonetheless support an IDF invasion of that city. They support, that is, the IDF’s goal of crushing Hamas as a military force throughout Gaza.

Israel has a deep bench of supporters in the United States. The Bidenites need to understand that. Perhaps, once they examine the results of this latest Harvard-Harris poll, they will.
