TED-Thank you very much. From the second one, “Je regrette rein” I think we have the same LP . The only record I ever bought new which wasn’t New Orleans Jazz.
The best I can say about Lucy Thomas s that she has a very nice voice.but this rendition,.very little shrug, obviously rehearsed, every head shake to express emotion,(poorly) is so obvious. She , with her fine voice just goes through the .motions..She just sings it, doesn’t feel it.
She just doesn’t have the style to sing such a song.
Piaf, who had an enormously tragic life, was full of often expressed feelings. She just sings and it pours out.. No vocal training, and no school education. Life from birth to death in song, often about herself, (and her eternal hopes, the reason for her writing La Vie En Rose). She was 4’10” tall, lived in the gutters, and later with her grandmother who ran a brothel after abandonment by her mother.,
Youtube, key in “La Vie En Rose” .It’s a far better acoustic rendering. I also like “Milord”..
When Marcel Cerdan was killed, she died internally also. I saw her on the Ed Sullivan show just a couple of years before she died. I also knew a French woman who knew her for about 5-6 years, when in her teens, and she knew a lot about her abysmal life, when she and her street acrobat father travelled the country performing at
corners picking up coIns etc
Just listen to the youtube one.
@ Edgar G.:
I still have a disc of Edith Piaf singling La Vie En Rose. Always loved her and the song.
But I do believe that Lucy gives her a run for her money.
I have added it to the post..
TED….Lucy Thomas…Very nice voice, obviously. VERY obviously schooled and rehearsed. Combines for a poor effect….in mY opinion. There is only ONE person who ever could sing “La Vie en Rose” and that was EDITH PIAF. She qwas a completely natural singer full of REAL emtion when she sang. Put HER on and you’ll immediately see the difference, even with the less enhanced sound technology. She had the audience right in her hand from the beginning.
As for Israel singers Adam is right , give them a boost , helps earn a better living, but for me I liked Esther Ofarim.
Ted, I wish you would play some
Israeli singers for your lightening-up posts. Israel is filled with talented singers who are not known to most of the American and Canadian publics. These artists could use a boost from Israpundit. And I/m sure your audience will enjoy hearing from many of them. Israeli musical artists play in a wide variety of styles, from klezmer to traditional Middle Eastern to rock and hiphop. Why not give them a boost and Israpundit readers a treat?
