  1. @ Adam Dalgliesh:

You may be right. I was only pointing out the pacific and extremely moderate tone of the “demonstration” so as to show how it differed from the “scare’ Headline.

No fire-crackers, no loud shouting, no hoarse chanting. No blood-curdling…and a speaker-not old-with a comfortably padded stomach…as indeed we have seen on many of the crowds in other examples of Jordan unrest They plead starvation but are well dressed and fairly plump and looking healthy…

    Like chalk and cheese.

  2. Abdullah’s response to the protest movement seems to be to avoid an overly harsh crackdown on his opponents. He probably is aware that that approach didn’t help the last Shah of Iran. Many dictators who have been harshly repressive have ended up being assassinated. So he may have decided on a more “sophisticated” approach, only arresting demonstrators when they become very “unruly,” and otherwise letting them talk. He may hope to wait out the opposition, thinking that eventually the protestors will get protest fatigue and it will die down. That approach worked for him when there were major antiregime demonstations in 20003 and 2011.

  3. @ Edgar G.: Certainly these videos present a confusing and sometimes contrdictory picture of the opposition movement. The government’s persecution of th opposition seems to be selective and erratic. Not all oppositionists, even open ones, seem afraid of arrest. Perhaps they think that their high social status, wealth, or connections to government officials will protect them. Or perhaps their positions of leadership in one of the tribes. I notice, though, that ththis video doesn’t show the faces of the audience, only the speaker. Most of the recent videos don’t show the faces of the “rank and file” demonstrators, only those of the people leading the demonstrations. The leaders may figure that the government already knows who they are, so it would be pointless to hide their faces.

  4. It’s laughable..even knowing the Arab decree to lie and ,, to listen to this man obviously in a large room somewhere, talk about their “traditions and history before the overseas foreigners came ( Hashemites).

Before Churchill gave the Eastern Palestine province of Trans-Jordan to Abdullah, the second son of the Hejaz Sharif Hussein, there was NO history …..unless one goes back to the days of when it was Nabataea. At the time he’s talking about ..it was an isolated desert nomadic stopping place where they lived in tents and used their left hands for certain personal toilet matters.
The main thing there was a Police Station, and the area, then called Moab, was run by 2 British Police officers and about 10 native subordinates.

This guy is saying that they should protest outside the US Embassy, and being peaceful they’ll have no trouble with the police. At the same time he’s accusing the police of arresting and imprisoning innocent harmless individuals (like himself-who is free)….for no reason at all.

All in all this did NOT seem like any sort of dangerous …rebellious … gatherng of revolutionaries. More like a lecture. Or an outing for the wife(s) and kids.

    Geh Fregem…??
