The real reasons why the Manifesto’s “diagnosis” of the wotld’ills is wrong is that most human conflicts are not class struggles. Territorial disputes between nations, and ethnic, tribal, religious and racial conflicts, and even personal rivalry between upper-class individuals, have historically played larger roles in t human conflicts than class struggles.
Some nations have suffered from periods of intense class conflict. The peasant rebellions in England and France in the 14th and 15th centuries are examples of class conflict. But this conflict was largely resolved when the English court system recognized the peasants who had fled serfdom on large landowners’ estates were now legally free men. The landlord class grudgingly accepted these rulings. Class conflict in England remained subdued from that time until the 19th century, when it reemerged at around the time Marx and Engels were writing.
Marx’s simplitic dichotomy between “oppressed” and “oppressor” in human conflicts is also face. In many human conflicts both sides “oppress” and are “oppressed” to some extent. Conflicts between groups of people are usually not simple maaters of “good guys” versus “bad guys,” as Max and Engels claimed. This simplistic mindset, in which all conflicts are seen as consiting of oppressed” and “oppressor,” is the deepest flaw in Marxist thinking, since it makes conflict resoltion based on compromise, in which both sides accept that there is some merit in the other sides’ concerns, impossible.
