Palestinian FM says Trump’s endorsement of two-state solution fell short of expectations
The Palestinian mission to the United Nations on Wednesday hosted a gathering of heads of international organizations and diplomats from some 40 nations to explore alternatives to the United States’ anticipated Israeli-Palestinian peace initiative.
The meeting, which was closed to the press, comes amid a worsening crisis between the US and Palestinians who froze all ties with President Donald Trump’s administration following its controversial decision in December recognizing Jerusalem as Israel’s capital.
Washington has since taken a series of punitive measures against the Palestinians in attempt to pressure them to play ball with its faltering attempt at getting them back to the negotiating table with Israel, including axing its previously generous aid program for the Palestinian territories.
Wednesday’s conference at the Grand Hyatt hotel in Manhattan was attended by the foreign ministers of Turkey, Ireland, and Japan, UK Minister for the Middle East Alistair Burt, and diplomats from Germany, Norway, Spain, Morocco, Egypt, Ethiopia, and Indonesia, among others.
UN Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process Nickolay Mladenov and Under-Secretary-General for Political Affairs Rosemary DiCarlo also attended the event.
USA and Israel were not invited.
