Jewish Home Deal ‘Historic’ Says Party Director

T. Belman. What about the Levy Report.

The new deal between Jewish Home and the Likud that led to the establishment of Binyamin Netanyahu’s new government is a “historic achievement for Religious Zionism,” the director of Jewish Home, Nir Orbach, said Thursday. “Today, there are no winners and losers,” Orbach said. “It is the state that has won and gained great representatives who will do their work faithfully.”

The deal was due to the hard work of party activists, who were dedicated to helping the party, despite the pressures and difficulties, said Orbach. “We would not be where we are today without their help.”

Under the deal with Likud, Jewish Home chairman Naftali Bennett will be named Education Minister, while Uri Ariel will be appointed Agricultural Minister, with responsibility for the government’s settlement division, which is largely responsible for construction in Judea and Samaria.

In addition, Ayelet Shaked will be named Justice Minister. In that position, she will be in charge of legally authorizing construction projects in Judea and Samaria, and will chair the government committee that nominates judges. In addition, she will choose the state’s candidate for Attorney General.

Orbach said that “G-d willing we and the government will succeed in our holy work of leading the state for the benefit of the Jewish people, the Land of Israel, and the Torah of Israel. We are at the last stages of the formation of the agreement, and we are hoping to insert several other important clauses. When the agreement is finalized, we will present it at a festive party meeting.”

According to sources, Netanyahu and his close aides are licking their wounds from what they consider to have been a “failed” coalition negotiation process, in which the Likud gave up far more than it wanted to in order to form the government. Especially hurtful, the sources said, was the ceding of the National Planning Commission to the Interior Ministry, which Moshe Kahlon’s Kulanu party will control. In addition, Netanyahu had hoped to withhold the authority to nominate an Attorney General from Shaked, an effort which also failed.

  1. Exclusive: Obama to back Palestinian state at Security Council – payback for Israel’s right-wing cabinet

US Secretary of State John Kerry plans to present the Obama administration’s new plans for Palestinian statehood to Saudi leaders during his visit to Riyadh Wednesday and Thursday, May 6-7. Kerry will use Washington’s willingness to meet Palestinian aspirations as currency for procuring Saudi and Gulf support for a Yemen ceasefire and their acceptance of the nuclear deal shaping up with Iran.

If there is any truth to this [being Debka], one of my concerns is that the GCC assembled jihadis might be, at obama’s request, used for terror against Israel in order to pressure Israel. I have always suspected, in spite of the rhetoric to the contrary, that Obama and the saudis are on the same page now just as the US and Saudi use of Jihadis have always been in the past.

  2. YNET reports:

According to Herzog, the new government’s agenda will result in damage to quality of life and the fabric of Israeli society; damage to woman’s rights, gay rights, workers’ rights and the media; incessant threats to the courts and rule of law; continuation of the political deadlock; and further transfer of billions to settlements.

“A government has been formed that has no responsibility, no stability, and no chance whatsoever to govern,” said Herzog. “If this is how he handles negotiations with his natural partners, how will he negotiate with the Palestinians? With world powers?

“He just gave up everything he had and surrendered under Bennett’s pressure. This is an example of how his political survival is more important than anything to him. That’s not leadership – it’s cowardice.”

  3. What the deal means is that Bayit Yehudi will be able to block the nomination of a leftist for Attorney General and ensure friendlier judges get nominated. It should also be able to protect Jewish communities in Judea and Samaria from further freezes and evictions. For a party with only 8 seats, this is a major political coup, indeed.

  4. This sounds great. He doesn’t mention the Prawer Report or the Levy REport. I am looking for what this victory means for the freeze and the Levy Report.
