JDCA Responds to Poll Indicating Overwhelming Disapproval of Trump Among Jewish Voters

T. Belman. The divide betweem American Jews and Israelis is too large to bridge. They support the two state solution, most Israelis don’t. They support the Iran deal, Israelis don’t. They support Muslim immigration, Israelis don’t. They reject Trump. Israelis love him.

Seventy-four percent of respondents plan to vote for Democrats for Congress in Nov.

Washington, DC – A new poll finds that 75 percent of American Jews disapprove of President Donald Trump, and that 74 percent plan on voting for Democratic candidates for Congress this fall. The survey was conducted by the Mellman Group on behalf of the Jewish Electoral Institute (JEI). The poll of 800 American Jewish voters confirms that American Jews remain firmly within the Democratic fold.

JEI is a non-partisan 501(c)(3) organization focused on deepening public’s understanding of the American Jewish electorate. This new organization is providing the public with information regarding the American Jewish electorate and leading a national, non-partisan Get Out The Jewish Vote effort.

These attitudes are further reflected in partisan and ideological affiliations of American Jewish voters. Sixty-eight percent of respondents identify as Democrats, while only 25 percent identify as Republicans. Sixty-four percent describe themselves as liberals, while only 29 percent describe themselves as political conservatives.

American Jews are particularly negative in their perception of President Trump’s handling of health care, the environment, gun safety, immigration, the Supreme Court and taxes. The poll also finds widespread disapproval with Trump’s handling of the Iranian nuclear deal, anti-Semitism, moving the U.S. Embassy in Israel, the U.S. relationship with Palestinians, and U.S. foreign policy overall.

When deciding which candidates to support in the midterms, “very important” issues for American Jewish voters are as follows: “the kind of Supreme Court Justices the candidate will support” (90%), “protecting Medicare and Social Security” (84%), and “making quality affordable healthcare available to every American (83%). While a significant number of Jewish voters (52%) say that a candidate’s support for Israel is “very important,” it is one of many issues of importance weighed by American Jewish voters when deciding which candidate to support.

On the topic of Israel, the poll finds that an overwhelming majority of American Jews support Israel, but also are critical of at least some of the Israeli government’s policies. Ninety-two percent of respondents identify as “generally pro-Israel,” but 59 percent of respondents also express some disagreement with the current government’s policies.

While Jewish voters are split almost evenly on how they respond to the way President Trump is handling U.S.-Israel relations, few are willing to support him on that alone. Only 6% say Trump’s Israel policy will cause them to consider voting for him despite disagreements on other important issues. Another 20% say they support Trump’s policy on Israel, but “disagree with him on too many other important issues.” In total, 71% say they will not consider voting for Trump in 2020.

American Jews also see Democrats as a pro-Israel party. Nearly two-thirds (64%) of Jewish voters believe the Democratic Party is “pro-Israel,” including 84% of those who identify themselves as Democrats.

“This poll proves what we have known for a long time: Americans Jews have a natural home in the Democratic Party due to its progressive, pro-Israel values,” said Jewish Democratic Council of America (JDCA) Executive Director Halie Soifer. “Jewish voters overwhelmingly support Democrats, and Democrats overwhelmingly support Israel. Democrats will win back control of Congress if we successfully get out the Jewish vote in November.”

The poll was conducted online between October 2 and 11, and selected for likely American Jewish voters. 93% of those polled indicated they are “almost certain” to vote in November. The margin of error is +/- 3.5 percent. The Mellman Group has provided sophisticated opinion research and strategic advice to political leaders, public interest organizations, Fortune 500 companies and government agencies for over thirty years. Mark Mellman, the group’s founder and chief executive officer, is president of the American Association of Political Consultants

  1. There isn’t one Jewish-American community but several, at least. The liberal groups are just the largest and noisiest. There are at least several others that support Israel and Trump. They tend to be fairly insular and quiet. There is a great Facebook Page, a closed group that you can apply to join, for example, called, “Persian Zionist Jews.” Liberal Jews have tried to centralize all Jews under their banner since reform Rabbi Isaac Meyer Wise in the 19th century. Needless, to say, Boro Park voted for Trump as did all the Russian Jews I know. Probably most of the Orthodox and nearly all of the Chasidim except for the Satmar. Probably most Sephardic Jews voted for Trump. If you enter the words, Jewish, Israel, or Zionist in the search engine in Facebook, you will see many groups one can join. And sometimes it prompts one asking if you are interested in joining a group based on past selections. All of the dozen or so, I have joined now are pro-Trump, pro-Israel as first priority, so far. We are a minority, but we are not nothing.

  2. @ :
    Democrats are complaining about what?
The lower taxes (Democrats want higher taxes)
    The strong stock market
    The record low unemployment
    The record low black unemployment
    The record low Hispanic unemployment
    The better trade deals
The higher GDP (Democrats said it could not be done)
    The decimation of ISIS
    The less belligerent North Korea
    The return of manufacturing jobs
The return of steel jobs (you cannot be a country without steel)
The return of an American pastor held captive in Turkey (All together 19 prisoners have been release with no ransom paid unlike the past administration who paid 400 million)
The fact President Trump is not politically correct
The VA Helpline, helping our veterans
The rebuilding of our military (Democrats cut military spending)
The arrest of MS-13 gang members by ICE (Democrats want to eliminate ICE)
    The wage earners growth
    The record low food stamps
The return of world respect for America
Standing up for America (no apology tours)¬
Stopping the New World Order/One World Government
Stopping China from stealing our technology
Stopping Iran from having nuclear weapons while Iran shouts “Death to America”
(Democrats want to reinstate the Iran Nuclear Agreement that allows Iran to have nukes)
Securing our borders (Democrats want open borders and sanctuary cities)
DON’T BELIEVE THE FAKE NEWS, KEEP AMERICA GREAT VOTE REPUBLICAN
Side note: Democrats want Medicare for all, in a nut shell your federal taxes will be doubled, corporate taxes doubled (and still insufficient to cover the estimated cost of $32.6 trillion over 10 years,) rationed health care especially surgery for seniors. The spending amounts to 10.7% of the GDP, national defense is 3% of GDP, think about the consequences, our economy decimated.

  3. A perfect example of how Jews “shoot themselves in the foot” again…..and again. Imagine them wearing blinkers every time you think of an American Jew. They still believe the Dems are not rapidly becoming the party of Jew haters.

  4. @ Bill Narvey:
most american jews are totally undeducated in jewish values, go to universities where they are brainwashed by professors who are anti-israel and anti religion, especially the jewish religion. most jews are very secular and accept the dogma of the left wing. on the other religious jews, know jewish values and have been voting for republicans for years, are generally pro-israel, pro-life, pro-god etc. In other words, they vote like evangelicals. they are also the fastest growing segment of the jewish population, while other segment of the jewish community are decreasing. Unfortunately most of them live in new York, New Jersey, california , blue states where the state votes democratic. However, south brooklyn is very red because of all the religious jews that live there

  5. @ Bill Narvey:

Bill..Jews “not stupid” yes, but gullible…. yes, in capitals. They make the most egregious choices towards people they assume are their friends, and are most often wrong. Look at the way the brilliant Jews of Israel, of the “machers” and even the ordinary population, are treating the Arab murderer squatters of YESHA. “Now this is your last chance” for the 199th time… as if they were just mischievous tiny tots

They keep thinking that if they dangle and give goodies, their hatred will abate. They are brilliant, yes, but they JUST DON’T GET IT, that Arabs are NOT normal mentally, are inculcated into Jew Hate almost from birth.

Look at how they gave “Israel” Arabs the full franchise, full political rights, to enemies, when all the International documents that gave Israel to the Jews, mentioned ONLY religious and cultural rights, but NO political rights for other inhabitants. How could they not expect polygamous Arabs, eventually not to outnumber Jews. Then the Oslo Accords, a curse on them. Bringing 10,000 murderers into Israel giving them land, respectability, weapons, and expecting to “live happy ever after”. What we did was give them a “sword to kill us with”.

(a side note..I live in Canada, but a non citizen legal resident is not allowed to vote in Federal Elections)

And all the thousands of years of horrendous persecutions actually taught them nothing, except that they are the bad ones and they have to sooth the Goyim all the time. Gain brownie points.

  6. Yes there are many American Jews who do not like Trump or support Israel in a way that many Israelis would like except those on the left.

However, there are many that do support Trump and Israel, yes not a majority based on voting patterns. However saying ALL is NOT accurate, that is implied in Ted’s opening statement.

I also find that some of the Jewish left (in USA) when educated in discussions are amenable to moderating their views on Israel. Even if they do not like Trump. So attacking and over generalizing is counter productive.

  7. Jews generally are not a gullible or stupid people. So why are the large majority of non-Orthodox American Jews so gullible that they have so easily embraced the Democrat/left wing Trump Derangement Syndrome and taken to thinking, speaking and acting so stupidly based on their misguided, if not totally delusional belief that the Democrat party is pro-Israel to its core and the embodiment of Jewish values?
