Israel pursuing similar goals to Russia – Lavrov

Peloni: An interesting change of tone from the previous outrageous challenge that Israel has no right to respond to October 7 made before the UN last month.  Could this change of tone be related to the recent move by Russia to support UAE’s rights to islands which have been contested with Iran or is it just coincidental?

The fight against Nazism is what historically unites Russia and the Middle Eastern country, the foreign minister said.

Israel’s declared goals of its ongoing operation against Hamas militants in Gaza seem nearly identical to Moscow’s in its campaign against the Ukrainian government, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has said in an interview with RIA Novosti on Thursday.

The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) has been carrying out a relentless bombing campaign in the Palestinian enclave of Gaza over the past two months following a surprise Hamas attack on Israeli territories on October 7. The attack by the Palestinian militants left some 1,200 people dead and saw the kidnapping of over 200 hostages. Israel’s response, meanwhile, has reportedly cost the lives of over 21,000 people, according to Gaza health officials.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has stated that the end goal of the IDF is the complete destruction of the Hamas movement in all its forms, as well as the elimination of all extremism in Gaza.

Lavrov, however, noted that these goals seem similar to “demilitarization” and “denazification,” which Moscow has been pursuing in Ukraine since it launched its offensive in February 2022.

The diplomat noted the hypocrisy demonstrated by Israel’s former government under Prime Minister Yair Lapid, who condemned Russia’s military operation and accused Moscow of attacking the civilian population and annexing parts of Ukraine. “This was unfair,” said Lavrov.

At the same time, the minister pointed out that the current Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu – who entered his sixth term in December 2022 – has not allowed himself to make any statements regarding Russia, despite international criticism and finding himself in “a difficult situation.”

Lavrov further recalled that Netanyahu had held two phone conversations with Russian President Vladimir Putin and that the Israelis had helped Moscow evacuate Russian citizens from Gaza.

“Therefore, we need to be very careful about our common history with Israel and, above all, the history of the fight against Nazism. This is the main thing that unites us historically,” Lavrov said.

Russia has repeatedly called on both Israel and Hamas to stop hostilities in Gaza, with Putin stating that the only way to resolve the Middle East crisis was through a “two-state” formula approved by the UN Security Council.

Netanyahu, meanwhile, has refused to send military aid to Ukraine and has instead offered himself as a potential mediator for peace talks between Moscow and Kiev.

  1. @dinastar

Same naive conception by the LWO-State department

I think it is at least a little naive to think that the LWO-State department are in any way naive.

  2. Hi, Sebastien.

On this thread, you’re the last one addressing me, so I will respond — even though you tend to flip from serious discussion to silliness at the drop of a hat.

You’ve made an attempt to distinguish between what you call “the American people” (i.e. “Republicans in Congress”), what Peloni calls them (Soros-paid pro-Hamas rioters), and what Ted Belman calls them (the US State Department), then gone on, like Peloni and Ted, to try to invent reasons why these various groups somehow act for or against countries far away from the US (namely, Israel and Ukraine). That’s quite a feat of mental gymnastics. You even invoke a new language, “Bush speak”, as though the readers weren’t confused enough.

I think I’ve been speaking plainly enough. Americans are the people I grew up with. They know right from wrong. They value life. They know there are only two sexes. They don’t wear ineffective “masks” to protect them from unseen spooks. They have a notion, that the way to gain wealth, or attain office, is through manifest merit and fairness. They all looked upon the Bible as a holy book, whether they practiced it or not. They honored our founding fathers, respected the American flag and the pledge of allegience. Whether you, Ted or Peloni agree with these things, none of you ought to have any doubt by now, that this is what I mean by “American”, that this describes the majority of American people, and that these are the people that some of you repeatedly denigrate.

This is like saying “up” is “up”, and “down” is “down”. If a fellow can’t figure it out, there’s not much of use that can be said.

You wrote, “As I have already said, The main reason of opponents of US aid to BOTH Israel and Ukraine, is the fact that the US under Biden is in no economic position to support either. They don’t give a sh*t about Bandar or Israeli politics.”

Change “people who” to “those rank and file Republicans who” and I wouldn’t disagree.

But, Republicans in Congress tried to split the funding bill because they support aid to Israel and also look at the disparity in numbers. The aid to Ukraine has been and is much more (and though unstated, it keeps Israel off the market as as a competitor and is an essential security as well as R&D resource for the U.S. as the Ukraine is not, see Admiral Yoram Ettinger’s blog) and threatens to escalate the U.S. into a direct conflict with a nuclear power. It has certainly created a united front (or “axis” in Bush speak) of our enemies. Moreover, Zelensky is as much of a tyrant as Putin, the regime is so corrupt and incompetent that U.S. weapons are winding up in Russian hands or that of Iranian proxies or on the black market and the war appears endless. These are the comments you read.

  4. Hi Peloni, several layers of threat are aimed directly and indirectly at Israel. What matters more urgently are the direct military threats , either terror groups , states etc..in that area US are helping Israel, last example is Blinken bypassing Congress to provide quick delivery of tanks shells . Overall , Iran and its proxies remain the main military threat . And Iran will stay very close to Russia no matter what the LWO thinkers may dream . Now to look way beyond the present , the LWO as you stated has other plans – mainly hostile to Israel – since they dream of enlisting Iran to their side by debilitating Israel with some mockery like the TSS . LWO and the State Department think and act the same . But Iran will not compromise for less than total destruction of Israel , ( same as the PLO ) so the current anti-israel alignement ( Hamas-PLO-Iran +proxies-Russia-China ) will remain compact. Therefore Lavrov last comparison ( both Russia and Israel fought nazism ) is only an attempt to confuse with a common past ( 1940-45 ) while the opposite blocs are fighting each other ( despite LWO dreams ..)…it won’t prosper. ” Comparaison n’est pas raison ” as we say in French.
Overall the attempt to snatch Ukraine away from Russia’s sphere of influence has been naively conceived by neocons followers of Zbigniew Brzezinski . And these neocons had no shame to work with openly nazis followers like Svoboda , etc..Same naive conception by the LWO-State department who dream of enlisting Iran on their side.
