An Israeli military court extended on Sunday the detention of a Jordanian lawmaker who was arrested by Israel for allegedly smuggling large quantities of weapons in the West.
Last Sunday, Jordan’s Foreign Affairs Ministry alleged that Jordanian lawmaker Imad al-Adwan was arrested for smuggling a large quantity of weapons into the West Bank. The court extended the detention by eight days.
Israel imposed a gag order on the affair, and hasn’t responded to the allegations. A rally was held in Jordan on Sunday in support of al-Adwan, and the heads of his family tribe called on King Abdullah to intervene and actively pursue his release.
Israel hasn’t allowed al-Adwan to meet with a lawyer but did let Jordan’s ambassador to Israel Rasan al-Majali, and the Jordanian consul to meet al-Adwan and update his family on his condition. In a statement from Jordan’s Foreign Ministry, al-Majali said that the lawmaker was in good condition. An attorney for al-Adwan said that the ban on visiting his client was valid only until the end of Monday at midnight, while it’s currently unclear whether Israel is intending to extend that ban as well.
According to Jordanian reports, Al-Adwan was reportedly detained on Sunday morning at the Allenby Bridge crossing, which serves as the main passage from Jordan to the West Bank. Palestinian and Jordanian media outlets published footage of the alleged seized weapons.
