  1. @ Laura Point taken but Ukraine is no friend either. Better to take both off the board with an armistice but the U.S. under Biden won’t have it.

  2. Wrong since Israel IS good and hamas IS bad. There are cases where the situation is indeed black and white.

Once a leader throws the WAR switch to ON, the words “good” and “bad” lose their relevance.

  3. putin met with hamas about the hostages.

Because cluster bombs release many small bomblets over a wide area, they pose risks to civilians both during attacks and afterwards. Unexploded bomblets can kill or maim civilians and/or unintended targets long after a conflict has ended, and are costly to locate and remove. This failure rate ranges from 2 percent to 40 percent or more.

Cluster munitions are prohibited for those nations that ratified the Convention on Cluster Munitions, adopted in Dublin, Ireland, in May 2008. The Convention entered into force and became binding international law upon ratifying states on 1 August 2010, six months after being ratified by 30 states.[1] As of 10 February 2022, a total of 123 states have joined the Convention, as 110 states parties and 13 signatories.[2]

  4. Hi, Edgar

Cluster munitions are indeed effective against non-entrenched infantry in open areas. Like mines, though they are often duds, and continue to lie, hidden by undergrowth, for years — often to explode in the hands of curious children — or stepped on by workers, as you say. So there is unintended collateral damage. If one wants to moralize on the matter, both sides in the Ukraine war deploy mines, in perhaps unprecedented numbers; and while the Ukrainians have bombed civilian structures used for military purposes (as the IDF does in Gaza), the Russians have indiscriminately bombed Ukrainian cities. If war were football, the UN could send referees on every sortie, to make sure everyone’s “playing nice”. I think they have tried this in Lebanon, not very successfully.

    Laura,

Once a leader throws the WAR switch to ON, the words “good” and “bad” lose their relevance. When I was in the army, my fellow GI’s even used “bad” as an adjective to mean “good”. War Crimes trials can be useful, to deter combatants from getting “too far” out of hand; but I don’t attach any moral “cachet” to them: They’re just another tool of war.

Yes, Putin is a “bad” guy — a butcher of his own serf-like population. Joe Biden has also been threatening lately, to send America’s youth into the Ukraine meat grinder. That troubles me.

  5. Sed-

I totally disagree with you abut cluster bombs. You are wrong. They are battlefield instruments like miniature minefields, and are intended to destroy tanks and and infantry in the field. They are rarely if ever dropped in civilian areas.

I recall that the controversies over them only arose years later after the then battlefields had become tillable acreage, and some uncollected, were accidentally stepped on by workers.

  6. What I think most people fell to remember in all this discussion is that all these men and women running the world are working for Hashem. they can do nothing unless he allows it. So, like a big game of chess God is picking up the head of little Putin, little biden, little bibi, little erdogdone from turkey and moving them around on the world chess board. What is most interesting is not what the move being made is, but what the intention of the move…. what action or reaction will happen by the move, which then creates another move and on and on and on, till mankind gets to the place that God wants us. Back in the Garden, with peace on earth.

Nations rise and fall, men come and go, thoughts are forgotten and paradigms change along with worldviews. Hashem never changes.

  7. I agree with this. We should be consistent. It angers me that the Biden administration has a double standard when it comes to treating Ukraine and Israel. Both Israel and Ukraine are fighting for their survival and Israel deserves the same allowance to ruthlessly defend itself.

It is evil to hypocriticallly give cluster bombs, which are designed to randomly hurt civilians, to Ukraine and then demand that Israel be kindler and gentler to the islamo-nazi army that, right now, is firing rockets from next to tents in Southern Gaza.

  8. Yes, it is. Just stop already being a Russia and putin apologist. Not only is Russia allied with bad guys in the Middle East, it met with hamas in Moscow and I maintain had a hand in 10/7. I’m shocked anyone here is still cheer leading for putin.

Russia is not the bad guy in Ukraine.

  9. It is evil to hypocriticallly give cluster bombs, which are designed to randomly hurt civilians, to Ukraine and then demand that Israel be kindler and gentler to the islamo-nazi army that, right now, is firing rockets from next to tents in Southern Gaza.

Intersectionality doesn’t work no matter who practices it. Russia is not the bad guy in Ukraine. It is allied with the bad guys in the Middle East. If Trump had had his way, we could have made it neutral.

Russia is looking out for its self-interest. Iran and it proxies are religiously motivated to destroy israel and murder all the Jews. Why cuiltivate more enemies than necessary?

The U.S. is a frenemy. Help with one hand and hurt with the other, always striving for stalemate. Israel must become a free agent and that means also finding a way to overcome the pro-U.S., pro-TSS forces, anti-sovereignty internal forces without civil war.

The recent internal left/right conflict led Iran and its proxies to believe that Israel could be defeated because “a house divided cannot stand.”

The good news is that everybody came together like a family. Mutual Aid and support for the war effort is the order of the day in Israel.

Even here, despite a noisy minority, including leftwing Jewish white house interns protesting, 72 percent of Jews in either the U.S. or New York with it’s 1.6 million Jews, I forget, support Israel’s handling of the war.

  10. To Laura ; you must admit that thanks to Ukraine the winning horse Putin -despite all his defects – has gained some legitimacy among fellow despots like Petro-monarchies . This legitimacy has nothing to do with western morality , only with power . I am not a fan or friend of Putin , as a realist – like Kissinger – one as to negotiate with very different set of values when one looks to achieve some deal

  11. I respectfully disagree with Mark Sleboda on Ukraine. Everyone who is honest agrees that the war is either at a stalemate or it’s over. Sending more money to a conflict that cannot be won is a waste. In addition, I disagree with his characterization that the money “just goes back into the military industrial complex.”

The money being spent there goes into politically corrupt hands there and comes back as money laundering for corrupt democrat politicians here. That is worse than wasteful, it is corrupt and evil.

It is evil to start a war that is not a just war. It is evil to start a war that is not a defensive war or required for national security. It is evil to kill innocent Ukrainians for a cause they cannot win. It was evil of Biden to start the war and cut off American fossil fuel investment and supply, thus causing inflation which is robbing our working class and middle class of what little wealth we may have.

There is no justification for the war over Ukraine’s boundaries when Biden doesn’t care about US boundaries. This is all insane and purposefully evil and it has worked much more against Americans than it has against the Russians. The democrats want a bogeyman like Putin to blame everything on. But it is THEY who are the problem, along with the RINO republicans who never saw a war they didn’t want to fund.

  12. I cannot believe this site is still celebrating putin, the ally of hamas and Iran and who likely had a hand in 10/7. Honestly, what is it with western right wingers and their affinity for putin? Go on the social media sites and ALL of the pro-Russia accounts are virulently anti-Israel and antisemitic. Apparently though nothing will cause even pro-Israel conservatives to break with putin.
