DEBKAfile Exclusive Analysis May 6, 2013, 12:05 PM (IDT)
Israel’s two air force strikes on Syria in three days – the second targeting the emblems of Assad rule overlooking Damascus from Mt. Qassioun – appear to be part of a tactical plan put together by the US Israel, and two Sunni powers, Turkey and Qatar, to break up the Tehran-Damascus-Beirut radical bloc and eventually force Iran to give up its nuclear bomb aspirations. This is how it will be interpreted by Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Bashar Assad and Hassan Nasrallah as they prepare their responses for the Israeli attacks.
Without officially confirming those strikes ever took place, Israel insisted that its air force and rockets singled out the advanced Iranian weapons waiting in Syria for transfer to Hizballah – and Hizballah itself. This message was designed for a purpose: It was meant to support Washington’s argument to Moscow that Israel had not aimed its bombs and rockets against Assad and his army – only the Iranian and Hizballah military presence in Syria.
But it didn’t quite work that way, because no one in Damascus slept a wink early Sunday, May 5, as Israel rocket blasts shook the city in what was described as a 4 magnitude earthquake and inflicted heavy casualties – not on the Hizballah brigades fighting in Syria, but Syrian elite units stationed around Mt. Qassioun.
The columns of fire over Damascus flashing across world screens caused the Assad regime and army serious loss of face.
Syrian officials could do no less then broadcast dire threats of war, but may be poised to do more.
Monday, May 6, the Syrian ruler spelled out his next plan of action in a message posted to Moscow: A third Israeli strike would incur an instantaneous Syrian response, he warned. Damascus would let Palestinian organizations off the leash to mount attacks against Israel from the Syrian Golan.
What this presages, according to our military sources, is the launching of a cross-border war of attrition mounted from Syria and Lebanon by Syrian and Hizballah soldiers posing as Palestinian fighters.
That is if Israel continues its assaults on Syria.
Iran’s Foreign Ministry Spokesman Ramin Mehmanparast said Monday that Israel’s “acts of aggression against Syria will not go unanswered and Tel Aviv will receive a crushing response.”
Washington is meanwhile expected to follow up on the Israeli operation in Syria by the end of May, early June, with operations ranging from US arms supplies to the Syrian rebels to demolishing Syria’s air force facilities and missile sites by US air strikes from Turkey, Europe and Israel. Barak Obama used this tactic to overthrow Muammar Qaddafi in Libya two years ago.
The Obama administration made a point of getting these options into print in Monday’s media after saying in answer to a question about the Israeli air strikes: “Israel justifiably has to guard against advance weapons reaching Hizballah.”
DEBKAfile’s military sources: Since the Syrian rebels are being systematically ground down and falling apart under the crushing weight of the Syrian army backed by Iranian and Hizballah troops and Moscow, feeding the rebels more weapons may no longer avail. So this would be the less probable of the two options.
And meanwhile, Israel’s military operation has altered the military equation for Syria. And so President Barack Obama will again try to proposition Vladimir Putin for a joint effort to end the Syrian war. He would not be averse even to Russian forces landing in Syria to enforce the termination of hostilities.
The US president got nowhere with his past bids to break up the Iranian-Syrian-Hizballah front – mainly because he was outmaneuvered by Russia.
On April 27, before Israel embarked on action against Syria, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov forged a new Russian alliance with Hizballah in Beirut. This was Putin’s answer to Obama’s direct appeal for a partnership in the effort to terminate the Syrian conflict.
Obama’s rejoinder was the green light he gave Israel to go for Iranian and Hizballah targets in Syria.
The claim by a “senior US intelligence official” that Israel did not apprise Washington before embarking on its Syrian operation does not hold water. The Netanyahu government might have embarked on a “justifiable” operation against advanced Iranian arms for Hizballah on its own, but would not have stuck its neck out to strike Syria’s elite troops on Mt. Qassioun without first clearing it with the Obama administration.
But the new direction now indicated may derail Washington’s plan for a superpower deal to bring the horrendous Syrian crisis to a close. The local players, Khamenei, Assad and Nasrallah, are getting ready to grab the wheel and push the US and Israel off the driving seat.
Assad warned Moscow Monday of his plan for a war of attrition against Israel, using Palestinian fighters as cutouts, while Iran, Syria and Hizballah turned their missile batteries around to face Israel.
Having taken the calculated risk that Syria would be too busy with its own war to embark on a major reprisal, Israel Sunday night placed the country’s northern borders and region, including the big port town of Haifa – and its early warning systems – on the highest level of war alert, closed its northern airspace to civilian traffic for a couple of days, stationed Iron Dome anti-missile batteries at vulnerable points, and advised local authorities to go on standby.
All the parties concerned, from Washington and Moscow, to Jerusalem, Tehran, Damascus and Beirut, were waiting Monday on tenterhooks to see who made the next move.

In Judaism when we follow the tenants the ‘afterlife’ will take care of itself. In Judaism G-d is a merciful and forgiving G-d who does not hang past ‘sins’ over our heads ie the golden calf – ANCIENT HISTORY. On Shabbat there is a spirit of joyfulness. We do not observe the Sabbath for the purpose of ‘escaping hell’. It is given to us by G-d to take a load off and relax, enjoy, commune so that we can have the physical, emotional, mental and spiritual strength we will need for the week. It does not come from a spirit of OBEY OR ELSE but rather as a gift. In a few hours Shabbat will begin where I live. I can hardly wait!! I will have have dinner with my family (already prepared). I will shut down my computer and put my work aside….at 7:30pm I will go to Shul and welcome in the Bride of Shabbat and enjoy being with other members of my family. After the service we will have oneg (food) and we will sit around and chat about the week and wish each other well for the next week.

When you buy an electrical appliance, it usually comes with instructions in it’s use and care and also warnings. Now you have the choice of following the instructions and obeying the the warnings. If you don’t you may run the risk of being electrocuted as well as destroying the appliance. It’s your choice. There is no concept of an after life in Torah. The concept crept into Judaism much later in our history. Today most Jews believe in some form of afterlife but one markedly different than christian concepts but we do not dwell on the matter because Judaism is a system for how to live in this world and not the next. Therefore Jews believe that any righteous person Jew or gentile has a place in the next world and one need not be Jewish to attain that status. Judaism posits deeds what you call works over faith.
Christianity is based on fear of the lake of fire and Dante’s hell. Christianity is based on pagan dualism like the war between good and evil and Satan against G-d. Jews need not have to be bribed like Muslims and christians through fear and or rewards of virgins. The Jewish reward is coming as near as possible to G-d, to emulate G-d on earth. (“And You Shall Be As G-d’s”)
The commandments were given so that if observed we can live an ethical and moral life in this world and if there is an afterlife why should not a righteous, ethical and moral person not ascend( his soul) in the next world? That said G-d does not expect us to be perfect, The Torah is the path Jews believe is the method for helping people to get on tract when they transgress through true repentance, atonement and doing of good deeds. In Judaism it’s the path that matters not the end results because people are imperfect, some more than others. One need only read the Jewish prophets to understand what is required of us.
A fundamental doctrine of Judaism is that G-d has created all human beings in His Image; and, consequently, all human beings are born innocent of Sin, including Humanity’s first Sin. Postpartum, G-d has bestowed upon every human being the Gift of Free Will to enable each human being to prospectively choose between doing Good and doing Evil, which Gift is the negation of the concept of the “Curse of Original Sin”.
“And HaShem said to Cain, ‘Why are you annoyed, and why has your countenance fallen? Surely, if you improve yourself, you will be forgiven. But if you do not improve yourself, Sin rests at the Door. Its desire is towards you; yet you can conquer it.’” (Genesis 4:6-7).
Consequently, Judaism rejects the concept of the “Curse of Original Sin”.
No!!
Who is speaking and to whom? G-d Speaking to the serpent. You must always ask when reading the Tanach who is speaking and to whom, Isiah 53 begins with the last 3 verses of Isiah 52 Chapter break is in error here. To know who is speaking and to whom, you have to read both the chapters preceding IS 53 and chapters after Is 53. Isaiah 53 is the 4th servants song, so who does Isaiah call the suffering servant in all other servant songs? Only Israel is called my servant none else.

Yamit, could you explain what people in Judaism expect to receive by practicing Judaism? Does it provide any understanding of life after death for its members or is it just a way of life to live while on Earth? You mentioned, ‘the Messiah in Judaism is a late development and not critical to Judaism.’ The earliest the Messiah is found in the Bible is when only Adam and Eve where on the Earth after they sinned. Do you think the following verse mentions the Messiah, and if not than who do you attribute the ‘He’ is ‘who shall bruise you on the head?’
‘And I will put enmity Between you and the woman, And between your seed and her seed; He shall bruise you on the head, And you shall bruise him on the heel.” Genesis 3;15
@ yamit82:
Yamit, I use the New American Standard Bible translation. You’re correct in saying Christians see the Messiah in the Jewish scriptures. Of the three men who visited Abraham before Sodom was destroyed are the two angels who went to Sodom and the third person is the Messiah. The ‘Servant’ mentioned in Is 53 describes the Messiah. The sacrifices in Leviticus and the Tabernacle itself are ‘types’ and ‘pictures’ of the Messiah. There are many more.
Yamit, what is the Tanech? Who wrote it and where did it come from and when?
@ Alanjo55:
You don’t take your christian bible seriously enough. Judge NOT lest YE be judged…..Condemn NOT lest YE be condemed. You take it to the next level…..so you are the one that is setting up yourself for disappointment…..
Alanjo55 Said:
Whose translation are you using 🙂 I said translation Kapish? You will in a million year never understand our scripture because you follow your false religion. You know and understand our scriptures through yours, ergo the real meaning will never be revealed to you. Every Jew understands he needs a wise and competent teacher to gain insight. When a christian reads our scriptures he is looking for yeshu, when a jews reds it he is looking to understand the teaching and how to apply it.
You are defeated before you begin. The whole concept of THE MESSIAH in Judaism is a late development and not critical to Judaism. How many times is The Messiah mentioned in the Tanach? Zero!!!! He is never named except as being of the seed of David and Solomon. That would negate your yeshu just on genealogy. Matthew or Luke both wrong. The other gospels never mention it so it must not have been important.

@ Alanjo55:
Fornication with unmarried women ( like widows) or gentiles is not considered adultery in Jewish Law. Sex is a good thing in Judaism but only when and where it is permitted. Judah and Tamar for example. The other side of the coin was Pinchas (Phineas).
If sex was not an enjoyable act we wouldn’t do it and procreation is the object of existence. Every living existing phyla reproduces itself which also negates Darwin. At the Cambrian explosion of animal life, 530 million years ago, some 50 phyla (basic body plans) appeared suddenly in the fossil record. Only 30 to 34 survived. The rest perished. Since then no new phyla have evolved.
Among the structures that appeared in the Cambrian were limbs, claws, eyes with optically perfect lenses, intestines. These exploded into being with no underlying hint in the fossil record that they were coming. Below them in the rock strata (i.e., older than them) are fossils of one-celled bacteria, algae, protozoans, and clumps known as the essentially structureless Ediacaran fossils of uncertain identity. How such complexities could form suddenly by random processes is an unanswered question. It is no wonder that Darwin himself, at seven locations in The Origin of Species, urged the reader to ignore the fossil record if he or she wanted to believe his theory. http://geraldschroeder.com/wordpress/?page_id=56

The answer is relevant in our time.
Where Did the Tribes of Reuven and Gad Go Wrong? When the tribes of Reuven and Gad, who possessed great herds of sheep and cattle, saw that the region was good for grazing, they approached Moses, requesting that he exempt them from crossing over the Jordan. Instead, they asked that their inheritance fall on the eastern side of the river – also a part of Eretz Yisrael – since it was suitable for their herds.
There was a fundamental problem with their desire to inherit the eastern side of the Jordan. Their order of priorities was faulty. Their motive for desiring to inherit that specific portion of the Land wasn’t because they felt a deep connection to it, as a place where they could fulfill the unique goal of revealing the Name of G-d in the world. Rather, they simply were concerned about their possessions. Moses knew that if their underlying reason for settling the Land did not stem from the exalted value of fulfilling the Covenant with G-d to reveal the Divine Presence in the world, their connection to the Land would be weak, and they would lose their grip on it – a tragic outcome that we have seen in our time, when portions of Eretz Yisrael have been handed over to enemies because of a flawed attachment to the Land and a superficial understanding of Israel’s Divine mission in being here.
The tribes of Reuven and Gad also showed a flawed orientation toward their children in valuing their possessions first, as seen in their request to Moses: “We will build here sheepfolds for our livestock, and cities for our children” (Bamidbar, 32:16). Rashi notes, on the basis of Tanchuma 7, that “They were more concerned about their possessions than about their sons and daughters, since they spoke first about their livestock and then about their children.” Moses corrected them by placing priorities in the proper order, telling them to first “build for yourselves cities for your children” and afterwards “enclosures for your sheep” (there, verse 24).
They cherished their wealth, preferring to reside outside of the Land of Israel. Therefore, they were exiled first amongst all the tribes, as it is written, ‘And he carried away the Reuveni, and the Gadi, and the half tribe of Menashe’ (Divrei Hayamim 1, 5:26). What caused this? It was due to the fact that they separated themselves from their brothers because of their possessions” and sensing that the region they had chosen was less sanctified then the western bank of the river, they brazenly erected an altar for themselves.
Joshua warned them not to and to move into Western Eretz Yisrael , they refused were were the first carried of to exile later. (Joshua 22:19)

There is no reference in the Jewish scripture re: Female homosexuality. Torah bans gay relations and various improbable modes of female bestiality, but not lesbian relations. The message is clear: any recreational sex is fine, but do not deviate from normal procreation. One of Judaism’s major tenets is sanctity of life, specifically of moral life. Gay relations threaten that tenet on both counts: of life and morality.

The Number 10 is a most symbolic and mystical number in Judaism.
Rambam teaches us (Mishnah commentary, Bechorot 4:3) that the very definition of the community of Israel (kahal) relates only to those Jews who inhabit Eretz Yisrael. In his Book of Commandments (positive commandment #153), Rambam goes so far as to give the precise minimum number to the kahal status of the Jewish people in the Land. He speaks of at least ten such residents.
Bearing in mind that the division of Eretz Yisrael did not include two of the tribes (Reu’ven and Gad opted out), one must recognize that the occupants of that part of Eretz Yisrael endowed with that special virtue of being the “land flowing with milk and honey” would number exactly ten tribes. This, too, was apparently not an accident.
The use of the number 10 in describing the Ten Commandments goes way beyond representing the numerical sum total of commandments found in the given text. Something very symbolic surrounds the number 10, which adds deeper understanding and appreciation to the very concept of the Ten Commandments.
Students of the Kabbalah will speak of the seven spheres, representing the seven concentric points of spiritual elevation in drawing oneself closer to G-d. These include Chesed, Gevurah, Tiferet, Netzach, Hod, Yesod, and Malchut. However, there are, to be sure, three additional rungs on this ladder of spiritual ascent, known as Chochmah, Binah, and Da’at (acronym: Chabad). All told, the nearly impossible task of achieving full rendezvous with G-d (deveikut, in Chassidic literature) demands movement through ten unique dimensions of spiritual existence. The number 10 represents totality and absolute perfection. Only G-d, the One and Only, could possibly fit this description. Hence, the human struggle to engage in such an encounter with G-d requires setting the number 10 as his goal.
A most famous teaching of the Zohar spells out an equation linking G-d, His Torah and His nation, the Jewish people. We have seen that the number 10, representing totality and perfection, is associated with G-d Himself. By extension, the number 10 can be applied to the Torah, as well, being the revealed Will of G-d Himself. Hence, we have the Ten Commandments. It, therefore, should come as no surprise that the Halachic quorum necessary to form a minyan would be the same number, 10. A minyan for purposes of public prayer is not to be understood as a gathering of ten individuals. A minyan is a representative body of the entire nation of Israel, covering the past, the present, as well as the future. The Talmud (Megillah 23b) derives the number 10 for minyan purposes from the ten wicked spies episode, connecting those verses with Vayikra 22:32: “And I will be sanctified amongst the Children of Israel.” All of the Halachic examples requiring a minyan are acts of Kiddush HaShem, performed, in a sense, in the presence and in the midst of the eternal Klal Yisrael. The numerical value assigned to designate the group of individuals now representing the entire Jewish people is borrowed from G-d Himself. Hence, the minyan consists of the number 10.
@ dove:
Dove, God’s Book is where my information comes from in the book of Genesis. In your answer to me you described more sin. Your description of a straight going to prison was because he despicably sinned and continued in more despicable sin. He was judged wasn’t he or he wouldn’t have gone to prison? Everyone judges others. When you see how other children act you judge them and decide whether you will allow your children to spend time with them. More sin isn’t the answer, less sin should be the goal. The words in God’s Book are not my words but rather they are God’s Words. God’s Word says homosexuality is an abomination to Him and a gross sin because it’s against His design of the institution of true marriage. I take His Word as truth so I’ll agree with Him. If you want to disagree with God that’s your decision but you are setting yourself up for a big disappointment.

The men who kiddnapped those young women are hetrosexuel.
Since God created science as Genesis describes we can observe that scientifically speaking, homosexual, lesbian and transgender are outcomes of the iniquity of mankind which exemplify sinful learned behavior through the instigation of satanic influence as is all sinful behavior. Trying to explain away sin like homosexuality or any others is trying to mock the Holy God which is dangerous to the soul. God Himself has said, ‘God is not mocked.’
@ Alanjo55:
You are out to lunch and it is not your place to judge. How about straights who get sent to prison and get themselves a bitch? That is a homosexual act committed by a hetro. Don’t blame the gay community for the breakdown of the hetro family – hold yourself accountable. Thats like blaming someone who is single for all the married break ups – REDICULOUS!!!! By the way…..I am as straight as an arrow…..
@ CuriousAmerican:
What about the JEWS???? They TOP the list of being the innocents……
Scientifically speaking, homosexual, lesbian and transgender should/could be understood as part of the human spectrum which is represented at one extremity by a “woman” and the other extremity a “man”. Over the course of human evolution, genetic rearrangements occur leading to an increase in the complexity of the initial genetic “psychological” spectrum of man-woman. In other words a number of mutations are compatible with normal survival and “diversity” while most mutations are fatal. That is the work of “Nature”. Why fight nature and not try to understand how she works?

Abraham and Lot were righteous in God’s eyes because they believed God would provide a Messiah at sometime future to them to redeem their sins making them worthy to live in God’s presence for all eternity. Abraham’s reasoning to stop at ten righteous people came about that Lot and his wife are 2 righteous people, their two daughters were likely believers which counted for 2 more righteous people. These daughters were engaged to get married and their fiances are thought very likely to be believers which results in 2 more righteous people totaling 6. Abraham reasoned for the length of time Lot lived in Sodom he surely must have witnessed a couple others become believers through his testimony or his daughters and their fiances had friends who became believers. Surely, 10 people must be believers/righteous in Sodom. But that’s not the case. There were less than 10 righteous. Sodom is known for its homosexuality and this true story shows the damage of what homosexuality results in for a society-judgement. Some have said that if God doesn’t judge the USA for its homosexuality He’ll have to apologize to Sodom and Gomorrah. We know God doesn’t apologize to anyone. The more our country promotes homosexuality expect judgement to come quicker. Do you think the USA hasn’t been judged yet because the righteous people living in the USA are keeping God’s judgement away?

Will you really sweep it away and not sparee the place for the sake of the fifty righteous people in it? 25Far be it from you to do such a thing—to kill the righteous with the wicked, treating the righteous and the wicked alike. Far be it from you! Will not the Judge of all the earth do right?”
26The Lord said, “If I find fifty righteous people in the city of Sodom, I will spare the whole place for their sake.”
27Then Abraham spoke up again: “Now that I have been so bold as to speak to the Lord, though I am nothing but dust and ashes, 28what if the number of the righteous is five less than fifty? Will you destroy the whole city for lack of five people?”
“If I find forty-five there,” he said, “I will not destroy it.”
29Once again he spoke to him, “What if only forty are found there?”
He said, “For the sake of forty, I will not do it.”
30Then he said, “May the Lord not be angry, but let me speak. What if only thirty can be found there?”
He answered, “I will not do it if I find thirty there.”
31Abraham said, “Now that I have been so bold as to speak to the Lord, what if only twenty can be found there?”
He said, “For the sake of twenty, I will not destroy it.”
32Then he said, “May the Lord not be angry, but let me speak just once more. What if only ten can be found there?”

Israels intervention should be as it is doing now. For one thing it needs to interdict arms and WMD to Hezbullah, it should find ways to encourage hezbullah fighting al qaeda(perhaps this will happen as a result of the saudis seeking to restore sunni hegemony and reduce hezbullah power). Anything that weakens both sides with the lowest cost is a good idea. Syria will not draw in Israel if it can avoid it, it would be assads death knell, he prefers to operate through hezbullah. Israels strike near damascus was also a warning to Assad not to tempt fate by transfers to Hezbullah. The Iranians and hezbullah have been setting up their own militias in Syria in the event of assads fall. If they can all be reduced to be tribes in war without weapons that is best.
If Israel merely made that strike to destroy the chemical weapons, that is fine. But if it was to help the overthrow of assad, this is a grave mistake. Israel should not be doing the west’s dirty work in facilitating the jihadists rise to power in Syria. Neither Israel or America should intervene in the Syrian civil war.
