@Felix And I was introduced to Anarchist Communism indirectly by my high school history teacher who was a Marxist who gave us all kinds of authoritative seeming texts about how it was the most peaceful and ultra-democratic revolution in history but I was suspicious of Communist police states and openly debated him in class. He then told me about the early Anarchist influences on Mao and I went up to the library and looked it up and my reading journey began. Two years later, I dropped out of music conservatory and went yo the East Village in search of the movement, which was tiny and iinvisible in the mid-to-late 70s. Activism was mainly in the anti-nuke movement which was organized along Anarchist Lines in decentralized affinity groups that federated and decided everything by consensus.
I was supposed to go fight the police who in the first one had hidden their badges and were quite brutal. in the second Seabrook demonstration. I had joined an affinity group and everything but I chickened out at the last moment. Maybe they all did. It was called off I heard.
I was 18 and scared and my big sister and her husband made fun of me. 😀

He was initially appointed as Chancellor as you say due to his electoral success, which you describe. Following the Nov 1932 election, however, the Nazi’s were dealt a loss of 34 seats, while the Communists continued to made gains. From this, the Nazi’s recognized that they had seen the limit of their power growth thru legitimate means. This is why they designed the unlawful overthrow of the govt as you indicate. Hence, his appointment as Chancellor was certainly not a coup, but I was not characterizing it as such – it was quite legitimate in nature. I would however continue to suggest that his overthrow of the govt to become dictator, even thru the use of emergency powers and with the cooperation of a corrupted court and govt, was still a coup.
You are quite correct about the the protesters being guilty of distorting history by describing Hitler’s rise to power as legitimate. Actually, most people who use the comparisons of Hitler and the Nazi’s employ the same dishonest tactics of historical re-imaginings to suit their immediate political needs. I am very much in favor of drawing lessons from history, but when the lessons are illegitimate, as is usually the standard with comparisons to the Nazi era, it renders that terrible age of corruption, sacrifice and destruction, to become far less terrible as a result. I find such opportunistic political stunts as are being employed by these bought and paid for protesters to be quite cynical, and quite damaging, from a number of perspectives, actually.

@Felix But in my time, we never got into these doctrinal disputes. It was all issue-oriented coalition politics. The major divide was between all the revolutionary tendencies and the reformist ones like the CPUSA and DSA, AOC’s group.
Certain Trot groups, like SWP and Sparticist League made themselves unwelcome because they always tried to take over. Every Marxist tendency was represented.
However, Workers World/All People’s Congress which at least began as Trot and then became like a militant CP (which is how everybody reffered to it and the parties of the third international) after the CP expelled all the revolutionaries in the 40’s who joined, played a very central role.
Everybody was pro-pal, anti-Israel.
You and Reader are the only pro-Israel Trots, or Marxists, for that matter, I have ever heard of.

@Felix I wasn’t always a Stalinist. For most of the time I was a Marxist, I didn’t take a position between Stalin and Trotsky. I read everything and worked with everybody. I began as an Anarchist Communist and morphed into a Marxist because I thought it was necessary to get to the same place, i.e, “Anarchy”/”Fully developed Communism”. My first revolutionary influence was the writings of Peter Kropotkin though in high school, I was a social-democrat and I admired Friedrich Ebert and Michael Karoly.
As a Stalinist, I was part of a tendency that admired Enver Hoxha.
I disagree that Trotsky in power would have done things differently. Look how grutal he was to the Makhnovschina as mimister of war. Look how brutal he was towards factory workers during the milutarization of labor period. Look at his position that the SU should only be a workers state, excluding the peasants and look where that led. There’s a video of Lenin, as well, on Youtube calling to smash the kulaks.

You missed the fourth coup from the 1930’s. Not surprising, as most people are unaware of it and those who are ignore it nonetheless. I am of course speaking of the Banker’s coup in the US to overthrow FDR. This coup, unlike the others, was faced down, not by the American govt, not by the American people, and not by the American military, but by one man, Smedley Darlington Butler. Of course, the possibility exists that all might not have run the course of these other fascist states even if Butler had not played the pivotal role of the hero in the hour in which he did. Indeed, even in the absence of Butler, the US might still not have fallen like Italy, Germany and Spain, as unlike the govts being overthown in those nations, the US govt had a far greater length of history, and the differences between America and these other countries are greater even than the fact that America is nothing resembling the Europeans, not its culture, its people or its acceptance of govt upheaval. We are, however, fortunate enough to not have had the burden to know how that eventuality might have resolve itself, as Butler did overthrow the coup launched against the US.
Had a similar patriot to Butler existed in Germany to face down the Little Corporal and his fellow revolutionaries in Italy and Spain, the world might have had a much less remarkable 20th Century. Unfortunately, there was no such opposition to forestall the overthrow of these govts, and the world fell into chaos as a result.
So as you are studying the rise of the fascists, it might also be informative to understand why there were only three such risings upon which to explore, and not a fourth. Something to consider.

@Reader I pointed out that the Orthodox only care about ancestry except for converts. It is the Reform who go by level of observance in upbringing for all. The law limiting the Law of Return would just reverse a recent, 1970, I think, amendment to the 1950 Law of Return that extends it to people with only one Jewish grandparent. Even for the Nazis, one Jewish grandparent was a grey area. I don’t know of antisemites today who would go by that. As things stand, people who are not Jewish and don’t wish to be are taking advantage of this loop hole to avail themselves of instant citizenship and all the financial benefits that entails in Israel and Israel’s Jewish population is shrinking every year as a result.
This 1970 amendment was undoubtedly added because in the Soviet Union, your nationality was printed on your internal passport and Jewish being considered as a nationality, it was a basis for racist discrimination. This amendment made sense at the time but that passport system was abolished 30 years ago.

If Jewishness is determined only by religious participation and proper observance (your opinion, Edgar, and also the opinion of Smotrich, et al., the Chief Rabbinate, and, increasingly, that of NBN and JAFI – in order to limit aliyah), then 9 out of 10 Jews of the Diaspora, even if all of their ancestors were Jewish, (although non-observant in a couple of most recent generations) are no longer part of the Jewish people, and, as such, have no right to consider Israel their national homeland.
This means that if there is Holocaust-2 (and I am convinced it will be, at least, attempted) this view signs a death sentence to most Jews or “Jews” (depending on whatever definition) who will be forced to remain in the Diaspora.
The murderers are not going to give out questionnaires to their intended victims to determine their level of observance (of course, the Orthodox will be the first to go because they are the easiest to identify, and just like 90 years ago, the ones most unwilling to make aliyah).
I cannot wrap my mind around the possibility that some people and, especially, the Government of Israel, are willing to abet the murder of as many 50% of the Jewish people to keep the purity of their (questionable) religious convictions and, “the Jewish character of the state”, as they understand it, and, last but not least, their desire to drastically limit aliyah (mostly because Zionism is dead and the population does not want to ruin its level of comfort).

In the 30’s Hitl er and Stalin flirted with each other behind the scenes leading to the Hitler-Stalin pact. The anti-slavic racism was a late development and they sought to enslave Poles and Russians not exterminate them. The eliminationist antisemitism was always central, everything else was negotiable.

Personally, as a secular Jew, raised as a secular Jew by parents who rejected Judaism as a religion as soon as they reached adulthood i think both are nonsense. Jews are a people before anything else, no different from Italians or Chinese and common sense dictates that if one parent is Jewish the child is half Jewish.

Biletsky was the head of the Social National Assembly’s militant wing, the Patriots of Ukraine. The Social National Assembly later rebranded to become the Svoboda party which was instrumentally involved in both the Maidan Coup and the Nazi/Monist/Nationalist seizure of power which followed. Following the Maidan Coup, Biletsky filled the gap of a willing military to wage war on the Russian citizens of the Dombas, by forming the Azov Battalion from his Patriots of Ukraine in combination with many of the butchers who carried out the Odessa Massacre in May ’14.

I think you are in error about both his parents being observant. The Jewish Chronicle did a deep investigation of Zelensky, and states that his parents lived in Soviet Russia where there was NO religion, and they were completely non observant. That this was the atmosphere where Zelensky grew up and he is the same.. The reason he doesn’t hide his ” Jewish blood” is that it means nothing to him.
He trades on it when he thinks it can benefit him. His wife is a shiksa and he’s had his children baptized as Orthodox Christians.
