Hizballah’s operational plans

Military history will record Israel’s failure to vanquish Hizbullah in the Second Lebanon War as one of the great strategic blunders in the modern era of warfare. Israel had the golden opportunity to sever Iran’s right arm in the region, but PM Olmert and his military commander Halutz botched it. Olmert would then go on to compound his mistake two years later in Gaza, leaving Hamas – Iran’s left arm in the region – intact. Today, both Hamas and Hizbullah have grown much stronger, and so has their controller, Iran.

Here is a summary of a report from the Jerusalem Center for Public Affairs. You can read the whole thing right here. It shouldn’t be a mystery why Iran would put this “information” into the news stream now. They’re trying to scare off an attack on their nuclear weapons program by hyping the response. But you be the judge. Even if Iran isn’t bluffing, what would prove more costly, an elective attack before they get the H-bomb, or an obligatory attack after? Failing to act decisively now could be fatal. Dan Friedman

Hizbullah Discusses Its Operational Plan for War with Israel:

Missile Fire on Tel Aviv and Conquest of the Galilee

By Shimon Shapira, JCPA

Hizbullah Discusses Its Operational Plan for War with Israel: Missile Fire on Tel Aviv and Conquest of the Galilee

In recent weeks Hizbullah leader Hasan Nasrallah held a series of meetings with his top-level military command as well as field commanders responsible for preparing for war with Israel. According to a source close to Hizbullah, Nasrallah’s operational directive was that in the next military conflict with Israel, Hizbullah will hit Tel Aviv with missiles at the outset of the war, while also dispatching forces to conquer the Galilee.

Hizbullah forces are being trained to fire at least ten thousand missiles, right at the war’s outset, at military and strategic targets such as airfields, military camps, and vital facilities including maritime ones, followed by the firing of rockets from launch sites whose location will come as a surprise to Israel.

The operational plan was formulated in tandem with senior Iranian strategic experts and will include a force of five thousand fighters who have recently trained in Iran, tasked with taking over designated zones in northern Israel including Nahariya, Shlomi, and Carmiel.

It was said that engineering units of the Iranian army had mined areas in the eastern Bekaa Valley that were seen as possible landing sites for Israeli special forces, and that Hizbullah had equipped itself with “smart” Iranian anti-tank missiles that can disrupt the defensive systems of Israel’s Merkava tanks.

Nasrallah’s recent escalation of public statements stems from heightened fear in Hizbullah that an Israeli and/or American attack on Iran is drawing nearer. As a strategic arm of Iran, Hizbullah sees itself as Iran’s first line of defense against Israel.

If circumstances are not favorable, they end up in gas chambers”.

Bruno Bettelheim, “Freud’s Vienna and Other Essays”

For nation-states, as for individual human beings, there can be no hope for survival in the absence of true and unapologetic conviction.

  2. I believe we should just write copious emails and quote this or that general who have repeatedly failed to do their jobs and wait until Iran lets loose a few nuclear bombs and then ask permits from the un, soetoro and cameron if they please let us defend ourselves.

  3. Israel’s most well informed and respected generals including present and past chief of staff as well the past and present heads of our security services all point out that even the most successful Israeli air attack on the six to ten underground Iranian sites which currently enrich uranium and plutonium for a future atomic bombs can only be partially damaged at best resulting in a delay in the Iranian bomb plans by a few months or possibly a year or two.

They all point out that the price that Israel will have to pay for this ineffective delay will be some 40,000 heavily armed rockets and missals covering all areas of Israel from all sides including Iran, Syria, Hizballa and Hamas striking and destroying vital econimic and military facities such as power stations, air force bases, seawater desalination plants, basic industries and heavily populared areas in our major cities including Tel Aviv and Haifa.

According to a press story several months ago from the IDF Home Command they have estimated that the homes of some 300,000 Israel’s will be damaged or destroyed and their residents will have to be evacuated as a result of such a response to an Israeli attack on Iran. The economy of Israel will be badly damaged for years.

Those who enthusiastically support initiating such an attack might change their minds after thousands of rocket begin falling on us from all sides.

Before Israel initiates such an adventure on its own, it must consider whether there are diplomatic and political alternatives that can be taken by the world community. Failing that Israel should only enter such a venture if it is a joint one together with the air-power and essential political support of the United States and the European Union.

  4. First of all, I’ve read your tripe before. You either condemn the U.S. or Israel

I am an equal opportunity condemner.

so honestly I can’t figure out where you live.

“We here in Israel have been and still are doing the heavy lifting”

first of all, nice nom de guerre. Tell me what you did to stop the handover of that settlement to Egypt.

Did as much as anyone could without trying to assassinate Begin or shooting the soldiers who came to bulldoze my house, and that included hundreds of acts of civil disobedience, two police files. Whenever some smart guy or gal came up with a crazy scheme to protest they came to me first to carry it out. I led a group who busted a Knesset closed committee meeting,( A first in Israel) I led 150 demonstrators down to Sharm to breakup a summit meeting between Begin and Sadat, before the worlds media, at a Hotel called the White House. The Army tried to block our entry and had at least 5 check points set up to stop us but we fooled them all slept on the beach for two days waiting for the event and when we hit we came in from the sea and at first they thought we were frogmen from Yamit. The elite anti terror units who tried to stop us congratulated us for our successful evasion. We burned the car of the government administrator, the police thought I did it and after all these years I learned a few years ago that my file was never closed. I didn’t do it. We welded shut the entrance to the administrators offices with them inside. I burned an Egyptian flag in front of the President of Israel before the worlds media which in Israel id a felony, but was never prosecuted. I had a support team that included Ha Etzni the Lawyer, Yuval Neiman the world famous physicist and Yisrael Ariel now the director of the Temple Institute.

I refused to leave my home voluntarily, (Two months before I had sever my 35 days in Lebanon even though I could have gotten out of it because of the evacuation, i couldn’t take the responsibility of my replacement getting killed for me), and was removed by force then watched them bulldoze my house, shed a few tears and headed North to start anew, I never voted or supported the Likud again. Cursed Begin and was happy to see the SOB go into depression and quit. I danced when they announced his demise. I served under Arik and know what he was, if he had opposed the deal with Egypt Begin would not have gone through with it. Lets say when he had his stroke I was in a party mood. I have no illusions re: the Leaders of Israel past and present.

And remember it was Begin, the last Israeli PM I respected who made that decision hoping peace would prevail with the Egyptians. Looks kinda shaky now.

Begin was a weak, cheap populist demagogue who like our BB today always caved under pressure. His mouth was bigger than his bite. Even Shamir who I really liked disappointed when he to caved and went to Madrid. He lived next door to me in Tel Aviv, he was a real ideologue, a real pathological killer. We had a meeting with Begin shortly before he left for Camp David and he promised us that he would never give up Yamit. 🙂

But again, if you’re an Israeli you resort to the usual tripe, the usual “guilt” tripping, the usual calling those of us who DECIDED AGAINST ALIYAH COWARDS AND THE LIKE when if you could read, my quote-en-quote “excuses” are not your average ones.

Your excuses are average, but an excuse of any type is still just an excuse.

You bet I am an Israeli and am also an American citizen and an Army Vet to boot. I don’t lay guilt trips I point out that you are full of BS. I have read what you think of Obama and others yet with all your criticisms you still stay in America. So America ha sit for leaders and so do we. I love it here, this is were the ACTION IS!!! Israel is the center of the Universe and I am a small part of it. I don’t give a s,,t about Obama or any of the other beasts in your political menagerie. There’s little to choose substantively between any of them, It’s political theater for ugly people.

*** Bagels and Lox never caught on here, neither has Dunkin doughnuts, Wendy’s, Burger king and Starbucks. That should tell you something. We prefer our own clone versions.

First off, it was Gush Katif, when I realized that an army supposedly sworn to protect me and my family and destroy our enemies was as much an enemy as those firing rockets or sending in their genocidal bombers. And a leader, supposedly the George Patton of Israel was more hell bent on smashing my home and making a mockery of living there. Ironically the real George Patton was supposedly an anti-Semite, but he NEVER hesitated in smashing Hitlerism. The Jewish George Patton of Israel chose to reward the Islamic equivalent of Hitlerism and smash homes instead!

If I witnessed thousands of Israelis screaming “ENOUGH” and marching into the streets to demand the levelling of Gaza instead of mass releases, especially so soon after the battered corpses of Goldwasser and Regev were returned…maybe, just maybe I’d be convinced Aliyah is good thing. But the corruption, the siesta mentalities, the business as usual, the “painful compromises” No, you convince me and others it is NOT a good thing. That going to Israel is going to a place to die, where your burnt bodies are ignored, where the sacrifice is forgotten.

The people who died at the Dolphinarium, at the Sbarro, at the Netanya Park Plaza Passover Seder, the two reservists (hey Yamit, I didn’t see you dragging the guy whose arms was full of the blood of the murdered reservists off his truck and doing the same to him – WHY NOT?) DIED IN VAIN. And yet you list pretty funny reasons why those of us stay in the Diaspora. Maybe we realized a long time ago that a government that could outlaw KACH but allow the scum, crooks, and Paly appeasers of Shas in, is not a government worth living under, the same government that forces people out of their homes and pisses on the aforementioned corpses.

Yada Yada Yada!!! I live here and feel the pain directly as well as personal anger but Heh, it’s up to us to change what is. Maybe we will succeed maybe not, time will tell but that can only be effected by those living here! You can be part or howl from the rear, but your voice from there, is worth zero here.

There is only a single reason why any Jew should live in Israel. G-d told us to. Now if you don’t believe in G-d than any excuse or no excuse will do fine, that’s your problem. There are good Jews and there are all the rest. We know where you are.

  5. Yamit,

First of all, I’ve read your tripe before. You either condemn the U.S. or Israel so honestly I can’t figure out where you live. As I wrote before, you seem to get out on the wrong side of the bed each morning.

Try a bit harder, Yamit…you still lose. My making Aliyah wouldn’t make a difference if those of you already there don’t have the cojones to say NO to a government you put in power that favors the enemy more than YOU!

  6. You ask me to make Aliyah – same old bleep …why? what for? To settle on a piece of treasured land only to have some pimpled jerk who calls me his brother telling me – in a most unbrotherly way that I have a couple of hours to vacate my home before he forces me out?

Or wake up one morning to find my entire family wiped out in a genocidal bombing, and later discover that the piece of crap I voted for as Prime Minister has decided to release my family’s murderers for some kidnapped kid who could have been freed years ago if that same gutless wonder sitting in the PM’s chair had decided to level Gaza one neighborhood at a time, and told the world no more aid, no more electricity, no more freshwater to scum who celebrated 9/11.

Top 10 Reasons Jews DON’T Make Aliyah
    by Tamar Yonah

“I’ve heard it all. Excuses, excuses, excuses. But in fact, it is your, “I’ll make aliyah only under MY conditions… not G-d’s.” – THAT is what it comes down to. Every Jew without exception should be yearning to come home.”

Here are just a few of the examples I have been given by Jews who make excuses why they can’t or won’t make aliyah…

    1) The government is not to their liking.
    2) They won’t come until there is peace.
    3) They don’t believe they are obligated to live here until the Moshiach comes (I think that Tzvi Fishman has proven that wrong with the Torah sources given on his blog.)
    4) They won’t come unless they know they have a job in their field waiting for them.
    5) Their kids are too old
    6) Their kids are too young
    7) They’re waiting until they retire
    8) They’re waiting until they are dead and need to be buried
    9) Their furniture won’t fit in these small apts. – Honest to goodness, this was an excuse. One American woman looked at my parent’s dining room when they were here touring Jerusalem on a pilot trip and the woman said, “I can’t make aliyah, I see that my dining room table would never fit into an Israeli apt. that I can afford”.
    10) I have old sick parents or I am divorced and I can’t take my kids with me.

Alan cut the crap You and most American Jews don’t make Aliyah is because you don’t want to. For any Jew today who wants to it’s as easy as buying a ticket on any commercial airline 500-800 dollars and in 11 hours you are here. Never have any Jews had an easier way and time to come to live in Israel.

We here in Israel have been and still are doing the heavy lifting and if it were up to me I would annul the Law of Return and bar any Jew from moving here unless they can provide a reasonable reason why they didn’t come sooner. This goes double and triple for those who claim they are observant Jews.

Minimally I would expect parents of Jewish American teenagers to send their kids for at least a 2 years abbreviated stint in the IDF. I would see that American students pick Israeli Universities over American ones. I would see that retirees retire to Israel instead of the usual destinations. I would see Jewish industrialists and businesses move their concerns to Israel.

  7. @Yonathan,

Just one big question for you.

What did you and your friends do to stop the buses leaving the prisons with the freed terrorists?

I can already answer that one – virtually nothing.

No, with things as they are, there won’t be “victories” in Israel’s future, I’m afraid. But many more dead and many more compromises. The system is rotted from within and has been that way for years. I’ve been there, I’ve seen it, I know it. Until you drag the ehud baraks and tzippity doo-dah lifnays in the streets ala Gaddafi, send bibi home to Sarah, and send Yishai up to Beirut to co-habit with his equally intolerant and crooked buddy Nasrallah, what you say will never happened. As said, I don’t want to go to a country where my home will be seized by some punk who has no Jewish nor Zionist education, or where my family might be slaughtered and the killers set free because you, Yonathan – and all of your so-called friends who say they want to change things – have never done so outside of bringing back the same incompetent, compromising, cowardly jerks.

I don’t need you offering condolences over my destroyed home nor family – because of the actions of a government that needs to be removed – all of ’em by the way – from office. A government that has clearly said it won’t protect me, but it will protect my enemies. No thanks, keep the Aliyah. It was something great, something VERY worthwhile 3 decades ago, but no longer.

  8. Alan, we all know the score as it stands with the Israeli government. But you can either sit in America and bitch about it on Israpundit or you can be here and be part of the process to change things. By doing what you’re doing, you have in effect given up and shouldered us here in Israel with all the responsibility to make the changes happen. And you have made it harder on us, because there is one less voice – one who isn’t willing to do what it takes to turn this country around and make it what it should be. I know the things you have to put up with are tough, but name one thing that is worth having that doesn’t force you though hardship to acquire it. You have decided that the dream of Israel isn’t worth it. We’ll get there without you. Just remember when you’re celebrating our victories in the future, that you weren’t willing to be a part of it.

  9. @Shmuel – Many thanks…to be honest I’m just as sad as I am angry. I’m sad – and angry – because I do see History repeating itself. It is also frightening because if bibi didn’t have the balls to stand up to Obama (outside of one or two times, afterwards he backslid as usual) and could be so smug, so stupid, and so insensitive to release over 1000 Israel 9/11 perpetrators instead of levelling Gaza – well, he won’t have the cojones to deal with Iran, and if by chance he did, his boyfriend ehudi barak wouldn’t let him.

    Be Well.

  10. Hard to argue with your views.
Regarding our “leaderhit” no much more can be added, Regretfully people here falls every time for the idiotic, pompous assed, untrue assurances that “ve vill’now vat to duuu”.
There is no jeopardy for the skunks. None.
They just recently piped all over that they will “assume responsibility” for the results of the release of a thousand plus murderous beasts. Lately also about the Hamas by any other name barrage of rockets. The items, all of them w/o exception, assume not such resposibility.
They also ALL KNOW and sign off for the money to pay for the items in uniform that are there only to attack Jews and Jewish homes. Every MK knows… No exceptions.
Under those conditions and unless people like you help those than are ready to mix it with the scum, indeed there is no chance.

  11. @Yonathan,

I actually think I am being more than fair, and probably quite charitable. bibi, especially after last week would not want me sitting where he is, because I would be launching a full-scale investigation of all Israeli parties, and would indict him and all the rest if I were the PM of Israel. What Israel is now is a disgrace.

Instead the same sorry ass (or asses – because they ALL are)busses the arses of anti-semites like Obama, tells us we’ve got to make the “painful concessions and compromises” – never mind having the balls and brains to tell our enemies, Palestinian, Lebanese, Iranian or otherwise that they’re the ONES WHO TAKE THE PAIN AND LIKE IT.

No thanks. Yes, anti-Semitism has increased in the Diaspora – but I’ll take my chances in a country that will still defend me, will not drive me from my home, will not piss on the graves of my loved ones. The USA with all its faults is still a nation of Honor. To Israel’s everlasting shame, they flushed honor down the potty years ago in “land for peace”, forced expulsions, the betrayal of the South Lebanese Army, the allowing Saddam’s SCUDs to rain down without a response (courtesy of Nazi collaborator Yitzhak Shamir), and pissing on the graves of those murdered in the mass release of their killers. If you won’t allow me to live in my home, if you release my family’s murderers, you are NOT a nation worth living in. If this burns, sorry, but I worked for Israel for many years, and it is NOT the country I knew, loved, and respected anymore – not since Begin.

  12. no question – the biggest war criminal in Israel today is bibi. he has violated every promise he made prior to election. Anyone haves a piece of stout string?

Eldad- villian no 2. remains in gov’t despite not approving of any of govt moves. another string please.

.M.K.member Eldad has recently announced the highly disturbing news that bioterrorism material has been smuggled into Israel through the highly porous border region of the Sinai peninsula. The specter of a biological attack is difficult for almost anyone to imagine. It makes of the most mundane object, death: a doorknob, a handshake, a breath can become poison. Like a nuclear bomb, the biological weapon threatens such a spectacle of horror — skin boiling with smallpox pustules, eyes blackened with anthrax lesions, the rotting bodies of bubonic plagues — that it can seem the province of fantasy or nightmare or, worse, political manipulation. Yet biological weapons are as old as war itself. The ancient Hittites marched victims of plague into the cities of their enemies; Herodotus described archers’ firing arrows tipped with manure. By the 20th century, nearly every major nation developed, produced and in some cases used a panoply of biological weapons, including anthrax, plague, typhoid and glanders. It is suspected that thousands of vials of anthrax and ricin are buried somehere in the Haifa region. Israeli security operatives have been scouring the area attempting to uncover the caches.

In addition to the menace indicated above, there are 75,000 highly sohisticated rockets based in Lebanon aimed at every Israeli city and many thousands of Hamas manned missiles in Gaza. There was never a time that Israel was in greater danger. And one reason for that is that the training and motivation of the current enemy is many times better than what Israel faced in the past.

The Obama administration has warned Israel an attack on Iran could endanger American troops in Afghanistan, threaten the world economy, and might invite massive retaliation in numerous world arenas. America’s dissaproval is another impediment to an immediate Israeli attack.

  14. Abbas is talking publicly about the PA “no longer existing”. Without Oslo and the PA, Abbas reverts to a wanted terrorist. Arrest him, try him, and shoot him when he tries to escape.

  15. IMO, we have a lot of other things to “do right” first between ourselves before worrying about our reliance on others.

  16. Perhaps G-d wants us to do the right thing, relying on him alone, rather than looking to the US for approval…We’ve only been told this MANY times.

  17. Alan, I don’t think you’re being fair here. There are MANY Israelis that can’t stand whats going on. We vote left we get left, we vote right, we get left. Most of our news is delivered by leftists, most of our judicial system is populated by leftists. We are working to change this. It would be very helpful if those Jews that align nationalistic would make aliyah post haste and not just talk about the problems.

  18. Many of us agree with you and some feel that the time is nearing for that element to face newly elected courts and at least life in prison.
Regretfully the trash will do more damage in the interim. Dagan is itching to be “recognized” and he will. He can count himself in the group of those destined to face the new courts.
After careful examination, it would take just a few to those unJewish types to be packed into real justice to be able to change our ruinous Oslo disaster trek.
Not more than 45 creeps need to vamoose.
Heading the pack is Peres and Beinish as well as the former Barak so called judge.
Beilin, Ben Ami, Barak, Gillon, Olmert, Livni, Dagan, Peri, Halutz, Ramon… and if we add the minows, as I said, about 45.

  19. we invited those crimminals to settell in oure land knowing they are crimminals and murders knowing their goal is to destroy israel so stop wineing and throw the s-o-bs out

  20. Absolutely correct.
The Barak albatros has been wrapped around our people’s neck for long enough.
The problem is that Barak and his “staff” are supported by the State Department and the person in the WH as it is Livni and others.
Yet. There are some poits of reference signaling that his hold is weakening. Not a second too soon.

  21. I tend to agree with Matt. While it was not designed to act so, the second Lebanon War indeed opened the eyes of the IDF whose leaders at the time had become soft and irresolute. Israel will not make the same mistake again. What some of the other writers are not taking into account is the uncontested air superiority that Israel would have. The reason Israel “lost” the second Lebanon war was not because of lack of weaponry; it was because of lack of will and a lack of a concept of what goal the IDF wished to achieve. The IDF’s greatest liability right now is defense minister Barak. He must go.

  22. Shmuel,

barak should have been shot as a traitor immediately after betraying the South Lebanese Army.

But you Israelis seem to prefer your hedonistic lifestyles and business-as-usual, even if it means more bombings, more terror, more mass releases of the murderers of women and childen*, more concessions to either Hamas, Hezbollah, Fatah – or even Al Qaeda – than ousting bastards like him.

Why? Or maybe I already know…

*p.s. remember the hundreds of murderers, including Kuntar that were released for the corpses of Goldwasser and Regev were done on the watches of Olmert, Livni and Barak. But even Bibi lost his ass two weeks ago.

  23. Why Olmert, Livni, and Ehud Barak aren’t in prison or not facing firing squads or the hangman’s noose remains a mystery to me. They’re traitors, plain and simple. Olmert and Livni alone should have been dragged out into the street and hanged IMMEDIATELY after it was a given that Goldwasser and Regev were coming home as tortured, battered corpses for those hundreds of murderers Olmert and that whore Livni released.

Remember this too, Halutz, piece of crap that he is, used much more military force in proportion to oust Jews from their homes in Gush Katif the year before than he used in subduing Hezbollah. The Israelis had the “Green Light” from President Bush, something they may never get in the future, they needed to go right into Beirut and the Syrian-Iranian camps in the Bekaa – and the pieces of crap blew it.

Hezbollah won – they NOW control Lebanon, and even the equally timid successors of Olmert and Livni, i.e., Netan-Yahoo, barak, and Yvette Lieberman didn’t do a damn thing to stop their coup even when ALL of them said they’d get Nasrallah.

Olmert and Livni LIED and Goldwasser and Regev DIED. Furthermore Lebanon is now bristling with missiles and the candyasses running Israel won’t do a damn thing about it.

  24. Military history will record Israel’s failure to vanquish Hizbullah in the Second Lebanon War as one of the great strategic blunders in the modern era of warfare.

History will record this as Hezbollah’s biggest blunder. Israel was sleep walking into the future and was in no position to defeat Hezbollah. This war was a gift to Israel because it was a wake-up call. If not for the Second Lebanon War (really the third Lebanon war), then Israel would be sleep walking into the catastrophe. Instead, Israel is wide awake and ready for a war that will threaten its very existence.

  25. I am former decorated IDF fighter, from the original Lebanon War.
And also a Senior-Fellow Engineer with resource management experience with the US Military Avionics Programs during the Golf War.
Unquestionably thousands of unguided but well aimed rockets can be extremely damaging. I wish
that our loved friends overseas would not understimate the danger from Hezbollha and its patrons.
We own the deployment of over 40000 of them amongs some better rockets to the innefable poison dwarf passing as minister of defense, Barak, and later to Olmert, Halutz, Livni and lets not forget, Peretz.
Signs are ominus as to the War potential.

Israel has effective forces and means to destroy Hezbollah, but that cannot be realized under the control of Barak, again.
Syria also possess many much better rockets and also WMD ability. Should Assad use that, Syria and all those associated with them will cease to exist.
Still, we apraoch very defficul times whose origina date back to Oslo and the “concepziah” involved.

  26. Hizbollah’s plans seem very dangerous for Israel to me. It will probably be to Israel’s advantage to preempt Hizbollah’s plans.

  27. “Hizbullah will hit Tel Aviv with missiles at the outset of the war”

This is the greatest help the Hizbies could possibly give to the Zionist cause. It’s about time that the Tel Avivians realize that they also live in Israel, along with the “settlers”, and that their interests do not lie with the Post-Zionists.

“…firing of rockets from launch sites whose location will come as a surprise to Israel.”

Probably true. Note that rockets are unguided, and of little tactical value. They are terror weapons.

“…Hizbullah had equipped itself with “smart” Iranian anti-tank missiles that can disrupt the defensive systems of Israel’s Merkava tanks.”

    Noted. Countermeasures ready.

“The operational plan was formulated in tandem with senior Iranian strategic experts and will include a force of five thousand fighters who have recently trained in Iran, tasked with taking over designated zones in northern Israel including Nahariya, Shlomi, and Carmiel.”

A micro-Tet Offensive! I suggest that they be interned in the South when captured, so they can be paraded through the streets of Jerusalem and Tel Aviv.
