Haredi MKs pledge to block ‘land for peace’ concessions

T. Belman. This is interesting. I always thought that they were only interested in maintaining their religious privileges. This is a right wing nationalist position which I would like Likud to embrace. Good for them.

MKs from the Knesset’s haredi UTJ party promise to oppose agreements which require relinquishing control of Israeli land.

Deputy Health Minister Yakov Litzman (UTJ) has clarified that he will oppose any agreements which including giving parts of Israel’s land to Muslims.

“The UTJ party has committed to continuing to oppose any retreat from the land of Israel,” Litzman said. “We do not support, and are not interested in, giving up parts of the Land of Israel. We will continue with this stance, which is supported by our Council of Torah Sages.”

MK Uri Maklev, also of UTJ, reiterated his colleague’s stance.

“The rulings which Israel’s sages have given was to oppose such agreements. This ruling is relevant today as well. And our opinions and votes on every subject are according to what the sages tell us.”

In 2017, UTJ’s MK Moshe Gafni claimed that it is permitted to dismantle Jewish settlements in exchange for peace.

“The first important thing is that the State of Israel be a Jewish state, otherwise we have no right to conduct negotiations with the Palestinians – they were here before us, we removed them from here,” he said then, adding that “if we do not have the historical right that the Jewish people have here, we have no rights.”

  1. @ Bear Klein:

BEAR- Thank you. That explains it for me. He obviously then meant, that at the particular time the IDF or fighting was in that area, some Arabs also lived around there.

For no real reason, (although I feel that there could be a slight connection made) it reminds me of Mark Twain story. He was visiting the then Sandwich Islands, and talking about the murder and eating of several missionaries somewhere.. The savages were loud was their condemnation of the tragedy. Then Twain casually mentioned that the cannibals came from the Sandwich Islands….As he put it…

“There was a long, awkward pause,…then the Chief coughed and said..”Welll… what did dem darned missionaries want to come foolin’ ’round here fur…”

  2. @ Edgar G.:I doubt he knows anything well aside from Yiddish and Hebrew.

He is anti anything the secular do including its education. He lives in Bnei Brak and was educated in Yeshiva’s.

  3. I wonder if Gafni is fluent in English, and understands all the nuances…There’s always the problem with Israelis speaking or translating into English, that many statements seem ambiguous or indeed contradictory.

He said “They were here before us and we removed them from here. “. This is the sort of remark that Jew-Haters grab, and scatter all over the Social Networks… He himself was not yet born until long after Israel re-established itself,

There are many Haredim living past the Green Line. Modiin Illit has 73K+ people living in it for example. Also UTJ is now trying to find new voters. Gradually many Haredim are becoming Zionists. Example those volunteering for the IDF.
