On Sunday, today, as the United Nations reached an agreement on a budget for the 2018-2019 fiscal year, the United States negotiated a reduction of more than $285 million off the 2016-2017 final budget, according to a press release issued by Ambassador Nikki Haley.
“In addition to these significant cost savings, we reduced the UN’s bloated management and support functions, bolstered support for key US priorities throughout the world, and instilled more discipline and accountability throughout the UN system,” Haley reported.
“The inefficiency and overspending of the United Nations are well-known,” Haley noted, adding, “We will no longer let the generosity of the American people be taken advantage of or remain unchecked.”
“This historic reduction in spending – in addition to many other moves toward a more efficient and accountable UN – is a big step in the right direction. While we are pleased with the results of this year’s budget negotiations, you can be sure we’ll continue to look at ways to increase the UN’s efficiency? while protecting our interests,” Ambassador Haley said.
According to the Committee on Contributions of the UN General Assembly, the US is the largest financial contributor to the United Nations, providing 22% of the entire UN budget in 2017. The next biggest contributor is Japan, which contributes just under 10%. EU countries pay a total of about 30%.
From July 2016 to June 2017, 28.6% of all UN peacekeeping operations in 2017 was paid for by the US.
Israel in 2017 contributed $10,845,846 to the UN. Saudi Arabia contributed $28,905,441. Egypt’s contribution came to $3,833,881.
There is an ambiguity. The headline indicate tha the US is cutting it’s contribution by $285 mill, but the article itself indicates that the US has succeeded in cutting $285 mill off thre budget, which I believe are two different things.
One represents a US saving of $285 mill….the other pares it down to $60 mill.
So which is it…?.
Even Humanitarian aid should be eliminated. What do you want to bet that the same aid or more could be organized more efficiently with the same money outside the UN. Most humanitarian aid goes to pay for bloated bureacracy, anyway. That’s when they’re not robbing, killing, and raping the locals. UN, open the books! Now, there’s a demand.

And,they lie, oh do they lie, again, and again, and again:
When will the UN apologize for anything? They deny everything just like the dictatorships that run it.
It’s a small start, but small it is. They should cut all or most of it. Cut everything that can be cut while retaining the veto in the Security Council. That’s all that matters. The UN can fall apart otherwise. It should fall apart. Veto EVERYTHING!
Trump should be encouraging allies to cut their UN contribution. Israel shouldn’t even need encouragement. Almost 11 million? For what? Abuse and threats? Please. Egypt contributes less than 4 and is part of the chorus of Israel bashers in the UN that always gets their way.
And the US separately pays for peace-keeping operations. The UN’s peace-keeping operations have been an unending series of scandals. That should stop. The US should organize its own coalitions and to the devil with the UN.
Wilson stayed out of the League of Nations. Smart
@ Edgar G.:
Sorry, should be about roughly $60 mill
That $285 mill represents a fleabite. And the report, none of the reports on this same item, mention to whom the $285 mill will represent a saving. It’s described as “from the budget” , so the presumption is that the US, which had declared itself as the \prime \mover in cutting back on it’s UN contributions, only claws back 22% of this amount, roughly $45 mill. As I said, a fleabite.
A reasonable-not good, but reasonable- start would have been 50% of the American contribution.
