In the end, Israel is going to have no choice but to annex Area C of Judea and Samaria, said lawyer and activist Elyakim Ha’etzni.
In the end, Israel is going to have no choice but to annex Area C of Judea and Samaria, according to attorney and former MK Elyakim Ha’etzni – and Israel would be better off doing it sooner rather than later.
With the Palestinian Authority filing applications to UN committees to accept it as a full member states, it’s just a matter of time before the UN recognizes “Palestine” as a state altogether. In response to the PA’s move, Israel has made a series of threats, the most serious a cutoff of aid to the PA.
But such a cutoff is not sufficient, said Ha’etzni. “If they are undertaking an act that will make them into a sovereign state we must respond in the same way,” he added.
Last week the Palestinian Authority filed requests for recognition as a full member state. If that is granted, the PA plans to do the same with dozens of other UN agencies, until it has joined enough to convince the PA to treat it as a member state. When that happens, said Ha’etzni, Israel’s options will be much more limited. “Any action by the IDF in ‘Palestine’ will be seen as violating the rights of a member state, leading to sanctions and other punishments against Israel, said He’etzni.
If the PA changes the rules of the game Israel must respond accordingly, he added. “If they change the status of Judea and Samaria, we have to do so too,” Haetzni said. “We have to at least impose Iin Israeli sovereignty in these areas as well.”
This must be done immediately, he added, before the PA acted unilaterally.
“If we do not act and allow the Palestinians the advantage, we will lose a great deal,” Haetzni added. “The Palestinians will be able to do all sorts of things, like open an airport – and Israel will not be able to stop them.”

Thanks for posting this. Good for Bennett. He is in a difficult position. If he does run for PM in the future it’s a huge sacrifice on his part.

No one is annexing anything, not now and not for the foreseeable future. Israelis realize full well that any act like this would be rejected out of hand by every nation or state which is either allied with or simply friendly to Israel, and our enemies would have another club to beat us up with internationally. Perhaps Mr. HaEtzni has a new right wing government in his back pocket which can actually be elected on an annexation platform, but I frankly doubt it. The status quo is just fine for now, and I would note that for at least the next three years with Obama in power, the ability of any Israeli government to act unilaterally will be severely limited. Of course the situation on the ground could change and the Palestinian baby killers could make some huge diplomatic or political faux pas. But what is more likely, Abbas is going to die or at least become so enfeebled as to be useless, and then the Palestinian terrorist enterprise called the PA will have to make some serious decisions or as is more likely, descend into total chaos. We will just have to see, but for the time being Israeli annexation of Areas B and C are just a fantasy.
@ Bear Klein:
How many people can the pro-sovereignty crowd turn-out into the street at one time & one place on relatively short notice?
Nice to see that HaEtzni is still continuing to be a spit-disturber. (He must be close to 90 yrs old.)
I’d be inclined to ALSO ask him what HE thinks might be the most effective way to proceed to pressure GOI.
Can you get hold of him, Ted, and pick his brain for ideas in this matter?

The ball is on your side of the tennis net, Ted. You are more or less wired into the ruling circles of Israel, or at least a lot more than your commenters. So what is your game plan for putting the ball back into the game? Because unless those in power start making their move, Israel stands to lose the whole tennis match.
But it’s not a tennis match. It’s probably the destiny of the Jewish state and the Jewish nation at stake unless those territories are locked into sovereignty of the State of Israel. And that is so even if no other state in the world recognizes Israel’s sovereignty.
So where exactly do we go from here?

the solution is to extend israeli civilian law over areas C, annex. Then the issues will not involve the army attacking Jews but the police maintaining Israeli law as in the rest of israel. All the problems result from not annexing and extending israel law. these problems do not exist where there is Israeli law and sovereignty. No reason to wait any longer on the PA to come to agreements. Annex C now.

Kerry is a chronic and habitual LIAR as proven by his vietnam lies. The prisoner release was a delay not a refusal; the refusal came after the pal applications to the UN. Kerry’s bigger lie was to say the talks collapsed with the announcement of the 700 houses. Kerry is simply a low life piece of lying shiite.
This is correct, they are acting outside of the agreed framework to impose their sovereignty and Israel must do the same if only to protect the same interests which the talks were to deal with. financial sanctions are a big mistake and unnecessary as they distract from the important issue and become a fig leaf of protection concealing the enormity of the Pal breach. The important issue is sovereignty and control over LAND! The UN will ultimately recognize a pal state and it will become a dispute between 2 states as far as the foreigners are concerned. By annexing C and maintaining its claims over A & B Israel protects its interests which the pals threaten outright short of war. annexation of C will maintain all of israels major interests and control all ingress and egress in keeping with israels claim to A & B. persons should only be allowed out but no one should be allowed in until the dispute is over. The Faux pal state will be unable to function as a state and all foreign reps should be barred. Kerry is trying to cover up the Pal breach and its obvious implications legally by blaming the end on Israel. he knows they have made a big legal faux pas and that Israels action is completely justified as a reaction to the Pal seeking statehood. I expect that Israel will not make such a permanent move until the Pals and UN actually initiate proceedings so as to fully pin the blame as irreversible. The pals may back out and the talks be re instituted, this may just be a face saving macho muscle flex for their street. If not the pals are fools unless Israel is the bigger fool and does not annex.

I wouldn’t know whether or not you are a dreamer. But one thing I learned from your latest comment is that you allude to chess as a game you probably don’t know much about. In real chess, you can threaten your opponent’s king with check, and that translates to checkmate and end of game if he cannot move his king out of check or capture the piece that put him into check. The only time you can use a knight to simultaneously threaten an opponent’s king and queen is if he or she is a fool and allows you to maneuver your knight into position to put his king into check and his queen into danger of immediate capture.
For your potential use, the pieces move as follows: the king can move one square at a time in up to eight directions. Pawns move forward one square at a time. Knights (which you called “horses” move in up to eight direction, but two squares one direction and one additional square left or right. Bishops move only diagonally in a single straight line in any of four directions. Rooks, sometimes termed “castles”, move the same as bishops, but only in straight lines parallel or perpendicular to the edges of the board. Queen, the most powerful offensive pieces on the board, combine the mobility of bishops and rooks.

As for the main thrust of your comment, I am sure we would all agree that Israel must learn to proactivism and ditch pavlovian response modes. But that is like the old Russian saying: “He looked up and discovered the sky”.
Next time, try to be a little more focused on specifics.

Unfortunately, in today’s current situation being what it is, it is actually a very realistic comment
How about doing something PROACTIVELY rather than as a Pavlovian reaction (and weak one at that…)
Imagine,
Just imagine for a minute, that Israel will somehow (miraculously) have a new pm sworn in. Someone that could best be described as “one that acts and behaves and projects like Putin”
Wow…
Things would move pretty quickly.
He would hold the king and the queen in check with his horse (is there any other move more exasperating than this??… 🙂 )
The world will get to hear a very brief speech that basically says “Israel is under new administration… We wish to live in peace…. Nonetheless, no more bullying will be tolerated as in times past…

I agree with Elyakim HaEtzni completely on the need to annex Area C before the Arabs pre-empt the issue.
He and the late Dr Israel Eldad, the old-time Lehi leader, were two of the brightest and most focused Jewish nationalists I had ever met when my wife and I were studying in Israel. I trust his judgement.
