Remember this.
The fleeing Russian forces adopted a “scorched earth” strategy, seizing or burning any supplies that the French might pillage from the countryside. Meanwhile, Napoleon’s supply lines became overextended as he advanced deeper and deeper into the Russian expanse.
Russia did the same in both WWI and WWII.
Also of note, as all eyes have been focused upon Kherson, Russia has taken control of Pavlovka, thus further consolidating the territory in Donetsk
It was a bold move to fall back across the river. The strategic benefits were obvious, but the consequences of the public response in the Russian homeland were to be as well. I am quite pleased to see that Putin is continuing to act in the best interest of his nation rather than falling pray to chasing headlines while sacrificing irreplaceable assets such as men and armaments. Unlike the desperate attempts to perform for the foreign press, as was done at Marioupol to the loss of countless Ukrainian lives and still losing the territory for which their sacrifice was made, Putin made a sensible but difficult move to abandon the land while seeing to the protection of his men and to the evacuation of the populace outside of Ukraine’s cleansing reach. A telling move which demonstrates what is recognized as being the assets which were most important to Russia. It does, however, also place the Russians in a position of forgoing the envelopment of Odessa until these abandoned regions are retaken. So, Winter is coming, and we will see how well the Ukrainians are able to hold on to this territory against a fully mechanized Russian onslaught over the frozen terrain. I suspect that the Ukrainians will prove to be far less successful in their endeavors than they were in losing them the first time, but time will tell this tale with certainty.
Listen young grasshopper. do not let your naive bias and hatred of Russia and Putin blind you to the facts on the ground. There is much knowledge in the old gray hairs. Listen and plumb the depth of their wisdom.
