Dershowitz presents plan to restart peace talks
By SAM SOKOL, JPOST
Alan Dershowitz presented a new plan to restart peace negotiations with the Palestinians on Sunday at the Jerusalem Post Conference in New York.
It would be a terrible mistake to begin talks based on the 1967 lines, Dershowitz said during a panel discussion on the topic of two states for two peoples. “That puts the Kotel in the hands of the PA at the start of negotiations,” Dershowitz said.
Dershowitz told the audience that he had spoken with Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas and suggested that a new basis for negotiations be agreed upon in which construction would continue in the settlement blocs but not in any areas in which there is “reasonable disagreement.”
Abbas signed a paper with Dershowitz that he would agree to such a move if the Israeli side would as well, Dershowitz stated.
Afterwards, the best-selling author asked Strategic Affairs Minister and co-panelist Yuval Steinitz if the Netanyahu administration would support negotiations conducted on such a basis and conducted in “good faith” with a “tripartite settlement freeze” that would “avoid the problem of what happened last time when [the Palestinians] didn’t do a darn thing.”
After Steinitz panned the idea, former National Security Advisor to Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu, Dr. Uzi Arad, told Dershowitz that he advised against such a move because “one does not take unilateral decisions of any kind” and especially not “unilateral concessions.”
Reciprocity is necessary in negotiations with the Palestinian Authority, Arad said.
“Among the things I asked Abbas,” Dershowitz later replied, adding that he agreed that reciprocity is necessary, was that “if this deal were made [Abbas] would agree not to bring cases before the International Criminal Court. His answer was ‘that’s a serious question and I’m going to give it serious consideration.'”
Following laughter from the audience, Dershowitz lashed out, saying that “It’s so easy to laugh but I have to tell you the audience today is not helpful in resolving complex and serious issues,” which lead to loud jeers and boos.
The bestselling author was booed loudly after telling audience members that they are “part of the problem” for laughing at his new framework for negotiations.
“You’re proving my point,? Dershowitz hit back, adding, “You are part of the problem, not the solution.”
The Post’s Senior Contributing Editor Caroline Glick, who was also on the panel, told the audience that she “Need[ed] to catch my breath for a second,” after Dershowitz’s comments. “It’s very nice to come in here and smack down your audience,” she intoned.
Dershowitz, she told the audience, is “nasty to those who disagree” with him.
“If you want to say that people who devote their lives to defending the Jewish state are illegitimate voices then why should I care what you have to say,” she asked Dershowitz.
Towards the end of the debate, Dershowitz alleged that those who booed him and former prime minister Ehud Olmert were not representative of American or Israeli Jewry and are “foolish.” He said he would defend his “right to tell you what I think of you and it’s not much.”
Glick was equal to herself.
She has balls.

Spengler is channeled by David P Goldman. His book How Civilizations Die (and why Islam is Dying, Too) was published by Regnery Press in September 2011. A volume of his essays on culture, religion and economics, It’s Not the End of the World – It’s Just the End of You, also appeared this fall, from Van Praag Press.

I submit there is more acrobat here than noetics.
Subject displays too many irrational, ideological, social and cultural accoutrements to be considered noetic.
If, by Spengler you mean the author of “The Decline of the West” I can only cite Mark Twain’s remark about rumors of his death.
@ yamit82:
Dershbag must, as his professional reputation demands, work at being Dershbag, lest his client list and media exposure shrink. Just like Ozzy Osborne, Mick Jagger, and Lady Gaga. The fact is, outside of the CNN/Piers Morgan/Oprah types, the average guy doesn’t give a damn. He defended OJ, right? That’s his calling card. He’d be much wiser to look in the mirror and take stock of his rants and those he endorses, but he’s too busy absorbed in himself.
@ Bernard Ross:
Asian Times one of the best sources and best written blogs out there. I love Spengler.
I agree that those who aren’t Israeli shouldn’t tell Israelis what to do, _unless asked_. At that point polite suggestions are fair game, as is a polite decline. Any peace process involving third parties is the same, and I’m not referring only to the Middle East.
Perhaps the fault here lies as much with the New York Post as with Dershowitz, unless it can be shown that the Israeli government solicited the event.
@ Michael Devolin:
I beg to differ; read some of the posts here. The comment applied to some in this audience, not that in the Forum he addressed.
@ Laura:
@ David Sternlight:
Nobody assassinated his character. They just expressed their opposition to his plan.
Deshowitz is a Jewish anti-Jew, as is all that ‘think’ like him.

your site had some interesting links on China. It has interested me that during the last 20 years the US has spent resources on treasury draining wars and adventures whereas the Chinese have managed to avoid most problems and develop its economy and military to massive proportions, quietly. A great strategy would have been to keep the US occupied in problems to dissipate its energies and resources while gaining strength. Accordingly, I always consider these links: China-No Korea-Pakistan-Islamic terrorists.

What do you expect, Mr. Ross, from someone who is keen on being friendly with Saudi diplomats? You are too much of a gentleman to contend with this noetic acrobat.
“I, frankly, can’t understand how someone who is apparently so brilliant can continue to hold those views.”
I agree, Mr. Chase. I watched the debate between Dershowitz and Rabbi Kahane. Rabbi Kahane, as usual with all his opponents in debate, blew him away. As for those who are sorry Dershowitz was treated rudely: Dershowitz is not an Israeli, has no business whatsoever telling Israeli Jews how they should treat their enemies. “He who meddles in a contention not belonging to him is like one who takes a dog by the ears.” If Dershowitz got bitten, he deserved it. End of story.

Israeli yellow card for US on Iran
Israel is standing up to American pressure to leave the Iranian nuclear program to Washington, despite recent reciprocal high-level visits and an “unprecedented” US$10 billion arms deal. Its intensions appear to be two-track: to push the US into more decisive action and to prepare world opinion for a unilateral strike on Iran

And the right sum would probably consist of getting his publicity-ravenous mug onto television.
Dershowitz is a serpent, and Israel should always regard his support as being tenuous. Prince Alan of Duplicity cannot have it both ways.
He can support Israel, or he can support the American president who loathes Israel.
This transvestite routine that Dershowitz likes to perform is getting really old. And what do we call someone named “Dershowitz” who votes for an anti-Semite?
A self-hating what? Dershowitz WORDS THAT HURT
You have the audacity to quote a pinko economist that has been proven wrong by history and events?
I guess you see a lot of his toothlessness in yourself. Roar in your case is but a meow.
Andy Lewis Said:
Well said.
I lost most of my respect for Dershowitz years ago when he defended O. J. Simpson and used tactics more appropriate to bar brawling than the bar itself. Then he came out in support of Obama in 2008, against him in 2012 until he recanted once more and supported him at the end of the campaign. It is obvious that Dershowitz is interested only in Dershowitz. He loves acclaim; lives on acclaim. He is consumed by the peace process and cares not what the eventual outcome might be. It is the “process” which, for him, is important, not the result. what does he care about results as he will be safely ensconced in America while Israel bleeds.
It is time that we Jews eliminate the “ghetto” mentality that has plagued us for nearly two millennia. We must stop asking the question “What will the goyim think?” and ask instead “Is it good for the Jews?”
One can disagree here without indulging in character assassination. Recall that Dershowitz was invited.
Since he has no authority and some think he is past it, reacting with shouts and jeers is a confession by those of their own weakness, and thus does not support their posturing. A powerful and confident person would thank him for sharing, and then ignore him.
John Kenneth Galbraith, in his seminal paper:”Economics and the Art of Controversy” argues that when one resorts to the public arena, rather than legislative, administrative, or other (military?) process, he has already lost the argument.
I, myself, subscribe to the view that it’s wonderful to hear an old, toothless lion roar.
Duh Dersh
Along with that right goes the right of his audience to tell him to phuque off. 😉
EVERY Jew should be concerned with Israel. However NO Jew should ‘go over heads’ unless endorsed to do so.

India changes reciprocal acquisition policies
New Delhi passes new amendment making joint development and production, knowledge sharing part of reciprocal procurement protocol. Move made ahead of massive military acquisitions
India changes reciprocal acquisition policies
Israel is still studying the changes in India’s reciprocal procurement and acquisition policies, which took effect on August 2, but it seems that they will benefit the Israeli military industries.
The main change is that joint development and production will now be considered as reciprocal acquisition – which stands to make life easier for the military industries in general, and those in Israel included.
India is a major market for the Israeli defense industries, but until now, the Indian government demanded that for every deal exceeding $55 million, the buyer would pursue reciprocal procurement amounting to 30% of the original deal.
As previously reported by IsraelDefense, the Indians are after knowledge as well. The amendment authorized by the Indian government will allow knowledge sharing with Indian companies as part of the overall worth of reciprocal defense acquisitions.
The Israeli military industries will have to reorganize ahead of new deals with the Indian government – and some are already being negotiated.
According to the amendment, knowledge sharing will be attributed monetarily and will then be deducted from the relevant 30% reciprocal acquisitions bid.
India made it clear that it would demand more knowledge sharing in exchange for defense deals, but New Delhi took its time deliberating the amendment.
Now that the bill was passed, knowledge sharing is mandatory and India hopes it will introduce new technology to its industry.
As reported, India chose France’s Dassault Rafale fighter jet over a US-made one because of Washington’s refusal to share knowledge as part of the deal.
The amendment also extends the period of time allotted to a company to fulfill its reciprocal acquisitions obligations from two years to seven.
As previously revealed by IsraelDefense, India is mulling massive military procurements for its ground, air and naval forces, on top of those executed in the past few years. This is why so many Israeli companies have increased their operations in India.
Now we got 5 and 6 on the way!!!
Navy launches $500m Dolphin submarine
The submarine, the most expensive weapon ever procured by Israel, can carry nuclear missiles according to foreign reports.
Israel Navy Commander Vice Admiral Ram Rotberg and Ministry of Defense director general Udi Shani today launched the new Dolphin submarine at Kiel Port in Germany. The submarine, named “INS Rahav”, will cost $500 million, one third of which will be financed by Germany. The INS Rahav is the most expensive item ever procured by the Ministry of Defense.
The INS Rahav will arrive in Israel in one year, after completing tests and is declared operational.
The Navy and Ministry of Defense said that the INS Rahav is one of the most advanced submarines in the world, and that its long-range secret mission capability would extend the IDF’s operational capabilities. According to the foreign media, the Dolphin-class submarines can also carry nuclear missiles.
Israel will receive the sixth Dolphin-class submarine, also built by HDW Shipyards GmbH, in a few years. The defense establishment calls this cutting-edge submarine an “improved Dolphin”. It will reportedly be delivered to the Navy in 2017 or 2018, and will also cost $500 million.
The Navy does not talk much about the operations of its submarine fleet, which the defense establishment calls “Israel’s very long arm”. Former Navy Commander Vice Admiral (res.) David Ben-Bassat once told “Globes”, “Doubling the submarine fleet will reflect Israel’s recognition of the strategic depth of its maritime space and will give the Navy immense capabilities. The IDF’s defense concept will be significantly improved and upgraded when it receives more submarines.”
Israel developed many of the Dolphin submarine’s systems. Defense sources say that Germany is making reciprocal procurements from Israeli civilian and defense companies as part of the program.

Maybe but Dershowitz is a media hog and his luster is worn thin in America his age puts him out of the limelight as it seems his services to the rich and Famous are not being hired these days so he is trying to get media attention by interjecting himself into our problems uninvited and unwanted. Everything he has ever done seems to be self-serving and ego driven.
I’m surprised he was even invited.
Though Dershowitz is trying to negotiate peace, he has no right to talk to Abbas without 1st consulting with the Israeli gov’t. He is not an Israeli and he doesn’t know what is good for Israel. Maybe he should be spending his time speaking to Obama to get the USA back to becoming a super power. Does anyone think Dershowitz is looking for the Nobel peace prize?
yamit82 Said:
the audience seemed to have the right idea.
Only he and Olmert haven’t noticed the decline of Olmert and his policies. I would have loved to see the audience reaction to this blowhard.
Dershowitz is a very important diplomat. Ask him and he will authenticate that view. 🙂
Year by year American Jewish Liberals are discovering that they have fewer and fewer allies in Israel and the divide and disconnect between the American Jewish Liberal and the average Israeli is growing to proportions that are becoming unbridgeable. Two different realities and mentalities.
We don’t need American Jewish money and they have nothing else to offer us, especially advice.
From Dershowitz Bio: Wikipedia
“. He was a rebellious student, often criticized by his teachers. The school’s career placement center told him he had talent and was capable of becoming an advertising executive, funeral director, or salesman. He later said his teachers told him to do something that “requires a big mouth and no brain … so I became a lawyer.””[
Alan Dershowitz has no authority to negotiate on Israel’s behalf or to outline any proposed negotiating formula.
He is not an Israeli citizen and has no right to determine what Israel should or should not do in relation to the Arabs.
I think anybody who reads this article and what took place needs to google a Dershowitz/Kahane debate from 30 years ago and then they’ll get a real taste of where he comes from. There is nothing that irks me more than someone, someone who is also Jewish, who is in a position of prominence and who doesn’t even reside in Israel, and who uses that podium to tell the Jews living in Israel what is in there best interest even after it’s been a proven failure. I think, in particular, it shows alot about Dershowitz himself when his only retort to people with opposing viewpoints is to call them fools. He may be a brilliant lawyer but Kahane was right- it has nothing to do with what being Jewish is and what preserving a “Jewish” state really means. They would readily sacrifice Jewish life and even Judaism itself in the name of a “peace” deal- in the name of being “humanitarian” by giving Jewish land away to create a Palestinian state. I, frankly, can’t understand how someone who is apparently so brilliant can continue to hold those views. Some would prefer to stick to an unsuccessful policy rather than admit that maybe they were wrong. I think that explains the high percentage of Jewish votes going for Obama in 2012. I understood his appeal in 2008 but after four years of his Middle East policy and treatment of Israel, couldn’t the Jewish constituency reconsider their vote? I think it’s the same psychology now with advocates of the TSS. How does Olmert explain the rejection of his offer back in 2007- what- Israel wasn’t generous enough? How does he explain that? I really think it’s a mental illness.
