Compromise deal offered to Liberman, haredi MKs

T. Belman. This is no deal at all.  Its bullshit. They must at least meet Liberman half way in terms of what he has been demanding.

In bid to form a right-wing government, brokers offer compromise deal to Yisrael Beytenu and haredi parties to break ongoing deadlock.

Negotiators trying to cobble together a narrow right-wing government have put together a new compromise deal, offering the plan to Yisrael Beytenu and haredi lawmakers in a bid to resolve the ongoing dispute between the two sides, and pave the way for a new right-wing government.

According to a report by Reshet Bet Tuesday morning, officials working to broker a deal between Yisrael Beytenu and the haredi Shas and United Torah Judaism parties have offered a new compromise arrangement aimed at bringing both sides into a new right-wing government led by Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu.

Under the proposed compromise deal, the haredi parties would cede a number of powerful positions they have held since 2015, including the Interior Ministry portfolio, currently held by Shas chief Aryeh Deri, and leadership of the Knesset’s Finance Committee, currently held by UTJ MK Moshe Gafni.

In exchange for these concessions, Yisrael Beytenu would waive its demands for changes to the status quo on religion and state, including civil marriage, state-funded public transportation on the Sabbath, and tougher rules for yeshiva students seeking army exemptions.

The plan was released by Reshet Bet Tuesday, just ahead of a meeting between Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu and Yisrael Beytenu chief Avidgor Liberman.

In preparation, Netanyahu met yesterday with the right-wing – religious bloc’s leaders, discussing how far some would compromise in order to bring Lieberman into the fold.

The meeting comes less than two days before Blue and White chief Benny Gantz loses the mandate to form a new government, which expires at 11:59 p.m. Wednesday night.

  2. First time some are saying there is a chance of a unity government. Largest amount of Israelis want this. I am not so sure it would be a stable government unless Bibi is cleared of charges or steps down as head of Likud. Then a narrow right-wing government with Liberman has not been stable either.

Largest amount of Israelis are in favor of the changes Liberman wants on religion & state issues. I personally am in favor but if was possible I am for enticing the Haredi into the IDF, National Service and offering higher education chance to them in lieu of a strict draft. The draft bill was actually allowing the IDF to determine how many Haredi they need. The comeback from the Haredi was fake as it allowed the government not the IDF to decide and the UTJ could just kill any draft bill or kill the government. This bill was required by the Supreme Court.

We will see soon! I have no clue and none of my personal sources have mentioned anything on this.

  3. Actually, the haredi parties have already met Leiberman half way on at least one of his demands. They have agreed that haredi men should by subject to the draft. The only significant change they have demanded is that the IDF, not the heads of yeshivas, should determine which haredi men should be drafted, and that the IDF command be allowed to set the number of haredi men to be drafted each year, instead of a permanent fixed quota for every future year. These are eminently reasonable modifications to Leiberman’s proposed draft law.

  4. Ted’s hostility to the haredim blinds him to the fact that it is the anti-Zionist Arab parties who are enemies of the state, not the haredim. It is they, not the haredim, who want to replace Israel with “Palestine” and move all the Jews somewhere else, or simply exterminate them.

  5. Also from Monday’s Arutz Sheva.

‘Gantz wants to be prime minister – at any cost’

Senior officials close to MK Gantz say he’s ‘not a pushover,’ isn’t afraid of relying on Arab parties for support.

Senior officials close to Blue and White leader MK Benny Gantz on Monday afternoon said the chairman is set on forming a government before his mandate to do so expires Wednesday night – no matter what the price.

In an interview with Arutz Sheva, the officials said Gantz is willing to pay even an outrageous price, and the bloc is determined “not to repeat the mistake made by Tzipi Livni in 2008, when she missed the chance to become prime minister.”

“Gantz looks like a pushover, but he’s not. Our goal is first of all that Gantz should take the position of prime minister – at any price, even if that means being dependent on the Arabs’ support,” they said.

“After [Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin] Netanyahu leaves the office, we’ll bring in other parties and it’ll become a Zionist government. But first of all we need to bring down Netanyahu’s rule.”

The officials also said that the hopes that Netanyahu and those close to him that Yisrael Beytenu Chairman MK Avigdor Liberman will allow them to form a right-wing government at the last minute are false hopes. “Liberman is putting Netanyahu to sleep,” they explained.

Neither Gantz nor Liberman is afraid of the price of forming a government supported by the Arabs: “After Netanyahu is out of office and the government is more Zionist, no one will remember that Liberman and Gantz received support from the Arabs.”

Gantz does not see a third round of elections as an option, they said, emphasizing that he “doesn’t want additional elections.”
