China Calls for Independent Palestinian State Based on ’67 Borders With Capital East Jerusalem

Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing, China, December 14, 2017. Nicolas Asfouri / APChina called for the establishment of an independent Palestinian state based on 1967 borders with East Jerusalem as its capital, Xinhua state media reported Thursday.

“China understands the Islamic countries’ concern about the status of Jerusalem,” a spokesperson for the Chinese Foreign Ministry said, adding that China “calls for a resolution to the issue in accordance with the relevant UN resolutions and international consensus.”

China also called for resuming talks between Israelis and Palestinians in the near future in order to provide a chance to solve the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

The remarks come a week after a Chinese high-tech delegation canceled its trip to Israel following U.S. President Donald Trump’s recognition of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital.

The Chinese Embassy has issued a formal travel warning, valid until January 10, 2018. China is concerned about the security situation following Trump’s announcement, and expects the conflict to impact its investment programs in Israel.

China’s increased interest in Israel is primarily based on its desire to shift its economic structure and transition from pollutant-heavy industry to a modern tech-driven economy. Severe air and food pollution in China, and the strength of social networking sites in the country, have sparked interest in mobile, internet, water, agricultural and advanced manufacturing technologies. Israel, which is popularly recognized as an innovative and technologically advanced country (including in water and agricultural technology), answers these needs.

In August, China revealed a four-point proposal aimed at ending the Mideast conflict, calling both Israel and the Palestinians “important partners” in its “One Belt, One Road” initiative, a mammoth Chinese-funded push to develop transport routes including ports, railways and roads to expand trade in a vast arc of countries across Asia, Africa and Europe.

In April, China reaffirmed its support for the Palestinians’ aspiration for statehood, calling the fact that they still do not have a state a “terrible injustice” that cannot continue.

In January 2016, Chinese President Xi Jinping called for establishing a Palestinian state within the pre-1967 borders amid efforts by China to assert its clout in the Middle East.

“China supports the peaceful process in the Middle East [and] the establishment of a Palestinian state with its capital being eastern Jerusalem,” Xi told the Arab League in Cairo.

  1. @ AryehbnBaruch:
In 1999, Macedonia established diplomatic relations with Taiwan and China retaliated by severing all diplomatic relations with Macedonia.

Israel has joint projects going on with China like the red-med railway, for example.
Google, “Israel21c China” without the quotation marks. Also google red-med railway.

While the suggestion is reasonable, China isn’t when it comes to Tibet and Taiwan.

  2. Hypocrites abound. 1967 Borders? No such rhing. These dictators should really mind their own business, free Tibet, Taiwan.

    I don’t like what I see in China, because my grandchildren live there;

Is there an interesting story there?

Everything you said is true and reminds me of this hilarious quote from the Chinese Philosopher, humorist and inventor, Lin YuTang (His importance there is underscored by the fact that the only funeral that both Chinese governments attended besides his was that of Two Gun Cohen)

“While in the West, the insane are so many that they are put in an asylum, in China the insane are so unusual that we worship them, as anybody who has a knowledge of Chinese literature will testify.”

    Hello, Sebastien

Tibet fits the description of an “occupied territory” so well, it turns Xi’s credibility into a colossal joke. As for Taiwan, it’s a perfect candidate for a “two state solution” — which Xi insists on denying, when it comes to Taiwan (which NEVER was part of PR China), but insists on implementing when it comes to the Jews.

In so many ways, this just seems like “same-o, same-o” antisemitism, leading one to wonder whether the world has ever changed and indeed, whether it WILL or CAN ever change. Nevertheless, there has been a great change, in recent years; and the change is a repeat of what happened between 1919 and 1939: It is the replacement of relatively free societies becoming dictatorships, focused on semi-divine characters. These include:

    1. The Iranian Ayatollah
    2. Vladimir Putin
    3. Xi Jinping
    4. Recep Tayyip Erdogan

These four countries cover a substantial part of Planet Earth:

19% of the world’s land area, 23% of its population and about 19% of its GDP/PPP.

Just as a benchmark, what we would call “The West” produces about 65% of the world’s GDP. That puts the four demigods in the same league as Hitler, Mussolini, Stalin and Franco. Then, there are and were others. Then, as now, the world has been in an 80-year change phase, a “saecula”, when old systems and ideas have become out-of-step with current realities; and the world turns to strong-looking leaders to handle its problems.

I don’t like what I see in China, because my grandchildren live there; and I will make one more point in this sidetrack: During the 1930s, the US came very close to a dictatorship, with FDR, his unprecedented 12 years in office and his “new deals”. That was in response to Hoover’s apparent inability to deal with the great problems of the country. Today, the US also has a larger-than-life personality as President, because our Congress, courts and former Predident, like Hoover, have left things in a mess.

So much for notes on China. It is a dangerous country, and Xi is a dangerous leader. He deals through de facto proxies, like North Korea, Pakistan and Iran, while personally assuming the aura of a great, impartial diplomat; but meanwhile, his minyons are proliferating nuclear weapons and dirty bombs, literally paving the way to Armageddon.

Should we listen to such a one, regarding Jerusalem? Should we hire a fox to guard the chicken coop? Not if we have any sense.
