Trump doubles down on the Panama Canal by posting “Welcome to the United States Canal”
@Adam D
I suspect this is a move to counter China’s growing footprint in Latin America. Maybe he’s thinking of some 21st century Monroe Doctrine?
This is a really stupid idea. Why make an enemy of Panama, one the few friiends the U.S. still retains in Latin America? Panama never recognized U.S. sovereignty over the canal, although it granted the U.S. a one hundred year lease of it. I believe that the U.S. still has a military base in Panama. It is reasonable that the Panamanians have sovereignty over a canal that runs through the middle of their country. Why fish in troubled waters?
