Gantz to US officials: Ending war without Rafah operation unacceptable to Israel

T. Belman.  Coming from Gantz, the messge was all the more important than if it came from Bibi.  According to most surveys, Gantz is expected togarner more seats than Likud.  His message shows how united Israel is.

‘Ending the war without clearing out Rafah is like sending a firefighter to extinguish 80% of the fire,’ Minister Benny Gantz tells National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan.

Among other things, Gantz told National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan that “ending the war without clearing out Rafah is like sending a firefighter to extinguish 80% of the fire,” Israel Hayom reported.

Gantz also met with US Vice President Kamala Harris, White House Coordinator for the Middle East and North Africa Brett McGurk, senators and congresspeople. All of the officials pressured Gantz to allow more humanitarian aid into Gaza, and even claimed that Israel is not truthful when she states that she is doing everything possible on the matter.

Israel Hayom found that some of the discussions on humanitarian issues were “difficult”; Biden administration officials expressed great doubt as to whether Israel is capable of evacuating the 1.2 million Gazans currently in and around Rafah before the military operation begins.

Gantz rejected these statements, emphasizing that ending the war in Gaza without a military operation in Rafah is something which is unacceptable to Israel. Regarding the humanitarian aid, Gantz explained that the issue is not one of bringing aid into Gaza but rather of distributing it to the civilians, since Hamas takes over the distribution as part of the preservation of its civil rule of Gaza. He also explained that in order to remove Hamas’ civil government abilities, it may be best to have a period of chaos in Gaza.

Gantz also rejected the idea of reinstating the Palestinian Authority in Gaza, noting that the Palestinian Authority has thus far not undergone sufficient change – something the US also demanded – for such a plan to be viable. Instead, Gantz proposed creating a “Gaza Civil Administration.”

A diplomatic source told Israel Hayom that there are deep differences between the perspective of the US government and that of most Israelis; in his visit, Gantz managed to close some of these gaps and present Israel’s viewpoint.

  1. France’s Macron urges allies not be cowardly on Ukraine

PRAGUE, March 5 (Reuters) – French President Emmanuel Macron told expats in Prague on Tuesday it was time for Ukraine’s allies to step up, adding that a moment was being approached “in our Europe where it will be appropriate not to be a coward.”
Macron has faced a backlash from many Western allies after he discussed the idea of sending Western troopsto Ukraine at a Paris-based conference on Ukraine on Feb. 26.
But during a visit to Prague on Tuesday, Macron said he stood by his comments, and that a “strategic leap” was necessary.
In a reference to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, Macron said that France and the Czech Republic were “well aware that war is back on our soil (in Europe), that some powers which have become unstoppable are extending every day their threat of attacking us even more, and that we will have to live up to history and the courage that it requires.”
Macron’s Feb. 26 comments, made after he hosted a meeting of Western leaders to rally support for Ukraine, fit with his reputation as a diplomatic disruptor who likes to break taboos and challenge conventional thinking.
French officials later explained that Macron’s intention was to stimulate debate and that ideas under discussion involved non-combat troops in roles such as demining, border protection or training Ukrainian forces.
    AMMUNITIONS
Macron also stressed on Tuesday his support for plans announced last month by the Czech Republic, backed by Canada, Denmark and others, to finance the rapid purchase of hundreds of thousands of ammunition rounds from third countries to dispatch to Ukraine.

I understand Israel’s desire for international help in its war against Hamas, etc.; but from an American perspective, Israel is just another place of conflict, trying to suck us into a global conflagration.

    1. Russian wars against Ukraine and other neighbors
    2. Israeli war against Hamas, Houtis, IRGC, etc.
    3. growing confrontation with China in Taiwan and Philippine Sea
    4. growing confrontation with N. Korea.
    5. Who knows, where else? Meanwhile, back at the ranch:

    0. thousands of military-age invaders streaming across the US borders.

From this side of things, it’s all one and the same conflict.
Don’t expect Americans to be gung-ho to jump into this mess.

  2. like sending a firefighter to extinguish 80% of the fire,”

Like Medicare? (which only pays 80%)
