Israel joins 140 other countries in voting in favor of resolution endorsing an end to the war in Ukraine. Ambassador Gilad Erdan: Once again, Israel stands alongside Ukraine.

Israel was one of 141 countries which on Thursday voted in favor of a United Nations resolution endorsing an end to the war in Ukraine.

As well as calling on parties to the conflict and the international community to seek to broker peace, the resolution also calls for Russia to withdraw from Ukraine’s territory.

Seven countries voted against the vote: Russia, Belarus, North Korea, Syria, Mali, Eritrea and Nicaragua.

32 countries abstained during the vote. China, India, South Africa, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, and much of Africa and Central Asia were among the abstentions.

Israel’s Ambassador to the UN, Gilad Erdan, tweeted following the vote, “Once again, Israel stands alongside Ukraine. Today in the UN, Israel voted in favor of a UNGA resolution for a comprehensive, just, and lasting peace in Ukraine. Israel will continue to support the Ukrainian people both at the UN and in the field!”

On Wednesday, Erdan addressed the General Assembly at a special session marking the one-year anniversary of Russia’s war against Ukraine.

In his address, Erdan laid out the extensive humanitarian aid that Israel provided for Ukraine over the past year and emphasized that Israel recognizes Ukraine’s territorial integrity and supports it in UN votes.

The ambassador announced, “Israel remains steadfast in continuing our support and even expanding it by advancing projects in the healthcare and civilian infrastructure across Ukraine, as well as aiding in the development of a smart early warning system to save Ukrainian lives from imminent rocket and missile attacks.”

Erdan also mentioned Russian forces’ widespread use of Iranian arms, saying, “The Ayatollahs are a worldwide threat, and for Ukraine, this couldn’t be clearer. Iranian arms and weapons are wreaking havoc in Ukraine, killing innocent civilians and destroying infrastructure. And this is just the beginning. If this is what the Iranian threat looks like today, I truly cannot imagine what it would be like should Iran become a nuclear threshold state.”

By the terms of the 11-paragraph resolution, the Assembly reiterated its demand that Russia “immediately, completely and unconditionally withdraw all of its military forces from the territory of Ukraine and called for a cessation of hostilities”.

  1. The countries who abstained is especially noteworthy as they make up a large portion of the world’s population and are very influential. The abstentions would seem to count as non support for the Ukrainian position or as a wait and see approach to see how things are going to come out before making a decision. Obviously Russia is going to prevail and it would be imprudent to not position oneself accordingly.

I’d call that very tepid support for Russia by countries it’s relying on as partners.

Apparently, this vote came AFTER Xi’s visit to Putin, yet China, South Asia and much of Africa are still on the fence. Also, it seems that Central Asia were solidly against Russia.

This doesn’t look good for Putin. At the same time, I see that there have been no infantry assaults by the Russians for about a week; and Putin cooperated with Biden, to allow the latter to stage the propaganda visit to Ki’iv. Considering that neither Xi nor Biden woud profit from a real peace (no more cheap petrol for Xi, nor war bonus for American arms merchants), it looks like both Russia and Ukraine are to be the chumps.
