T. Belman. I recently posted a video which said that the S-400 system disarmed the F-35’s. This video says otherwise.
Finland picks F-35 in $11B fighter battle Dec 10/21 This doesn’t mean it is effective against the S-400.
I could not find the article in Breaking Defense referred to in this video nor any confirmation that the S-400 would get the better of F-35.
Breaking! US F-35 Jet Hit By Russian Attack! Russia Fired Missile to US Warship! dEC 9/21
Regarding the S-400/F-35 controversy…The S-400 is undoubtedly a very capable system. Maybe, in a 1-on-1 match-up, it would get the best of an F-35. Hard to say. Tactical air operations, however, are rarely that straight forward, and with good planning, even dated assets can be effective against a target which is defended by an advanced missile system. I would say, therefore, that in context, the F-35’s could get the job done.
Relative to Israeli and Russian interactions, (in Syria), it seems that they have some sort of working agreement, where they both try not to step on the other’s toes. It would serve neither of their interests for things to spin out of control. Both may actually have some common interests in the area, which makes a cordial working relationship advantageous.
The propaganda war over which is better, the Russian S-400 system, or the US F-35, will likely continue. It could work in Israel’s interest to let the press continue to bad-mouth the F-35, and play up the S-400 system. Then, when Israel needs it most, the world, (and her enemies), may see what the F-35 is really capable of. In the meantime, flying against the S-400 system in Syria, gives the IAF a lot of practice, and ample opportunity to figure out its weaknesses and vulnerabilities.
@Bear
I knew about the exercises with her allies but was not aware Greece had the Russian system. That does explain some things. I am aware of the significance of the F35s and the upgrades on the Russian air defense systems. I read that the system actually learns from aircraft that evade the system, sort of an AI capability. Thanks again
@Peloni some of Israel’s current allies such as Greece have Russian Air Defense Systems. Israel in joint exercises is able to train against these.
The Russian’s do upgrade their systems and maybe they will make changes that them more effective. Israel systems prior to the F35 were able to defeat the S300 in drills and perhaps actual combat.
The F35 does have some great qualities and it networks with the older F16 and F15s Israel has and is a Force Multiplier.
How about making peace on Earth instead of being concerned with the level of weapons sales?
In order to sell more weapons, you have to foment more wars, and Israel really doesn’t (or shouldn’t) want that.
Plus it is feeding into the antisemitic trope that “Jews foment all wars”.
@Bear
Yes, I understand that Israel has no desire, anything but actually, of poking the Russian bear. The concern with the Russians that I referenced is that they would not be too please with the Israelis doing exactly as you state very strongly is possible, which you noted as well. The reality is that this Russian air defense system and the US F35s will ultimately be pulled into use against one another and the international sales for one will suffer. I am greatly encouraged to hear that the advantage does not lie with the missile system.
@Peloni Israel is NOT provoking the Russians. The Russians sell this equipment to some of Israel’s enemies. Israel is not looking to get in a tangle with the Russians but just the opposite. There is cooperation in Syria it is appears. Also when the EU and USA boycotted from selling some things to Russia like Dairy Products, Israel stepped and filled the need.
There are conflicts of interest of course because they want their equipment to be the best so they can sell it widely. Israel needs to be able to defeat this equipment because Russia sells to enemies such as Iran.
I don’t understand why Israel keeps huffing and puffing and loudly threatening Iran and Russia(!) when it is clearly not in Israel’s interests to provoke them.
Is it to please the Americans?
To show that Israel has the right weaponry to defeat anyone?
Is Israel doing its usual thing – screaming loudly “Restrain me, restrain me before I do something awful [usually building a few more settlements]”?
In this case the “world community” might just answer the call and decide to disarm the “aggressor”.
Israel’s whole territory, including the desert and the mountains, is one half of the Moscow metropolitan area (minus Moscow).
The whole thing is bizarre beyond words.
@Peloni which does not mean that if a pilot screws up he can not get shot down. It is not a walk in the park but definitely beatable.
@Bear
Sounds pretty definitive. Good to hear.
Ted, IAF can beat Russian made air defenses period end of the story.
How similar this is to the War of Attrition where the question of the technology was one contest, the Phantoms against the SAMS III(??) and then there was a second contest of Israel against Russia, and how far might the Israelis be allowed to go before they too strongly provoked the Russians. Seems that there was a book relating these topics that I had an interest in reading, right around the time the world became a comical telling of World War Z.
