  1. This video contains a lot of misinformation. The Soviets were hostile to Israel and did not “court” it between 1951 and 1991. The Soviets were more or less friendly to Israel for a brief period beginning in 1948, but that was only because they saw the formation of a Jewish state as a means of pushing the British out of Palestine. The Soviets were also hostile to the Zionist movement from 1917 until 1947, when the Jews’ revolt against the British, and the possibility that the General Assembly partition resolution would force the British out. The Boshevik Party was hostile to Israel from its inception in 1903.

The present Putin government has repeatedly condemned Israel for bombing the bases of its ally Syria. RT and Sputnik, which are Russian government-owned publications, not only condemn Israel’s role in Syria, but depict Israel as the oppressor of the Palesestinian Arabs and the main obstacle to Israel-Arab peace.

It is true that Putin personally has at times expressed some sympathy with Israel, and developed a cordial personal relationship with Netanyahu. But for whatever reason, Putin’s personal respect for Israel has not translated into a pro-Israel policy by the Russian government as a whole. Perhaps the explanation is that where Russia’s Mideast policy is concerned, Putin defers to the advice of his Mideast and military “experts.”
