Clearly, a nation that balks at being controlled by the UN will be deemed to be a threat to the UN’s definition of peace. And the UN has authority under this section of its Charter to wage war to accomplish its idea of peace.

At the insistence by the Biden administration the UNSC will discuss the violence in Israel early next week. Will America put it off again or will it allow the Security Council to attempt to impose a cease fire.
If the latter will Israel comply?
In past conflicts, Israel has rushed against the clock to achieve as much as they could before the deadline. In past cases the Palestinians didn’t adhere to the deadlines enabling Israel to do likewise. But ultimately they would accept it.
Now it is different. Israel doesn’t want a ceasefire, if you can believe the government rhetoric. Just because Biden supports Israel’s self defense, doesn’t mean that he will allow Israel that much leeway. I am guessing he will lower the hammer next week.
But Israel , certainly Israelis, is in no mood to stop short of victory.
There are two kinds of SC resolutions, those according to Chapter 6 and those according to Chapter 7. You can expect a non-binding Chap 6 resolution first. If that doesn’t take hold expect a binding Chap 7 resolution. Failure to comply with it can have dire consequences.
In my article Can the UN impose a solution on Israel? I concluded;
Clearly, a nation that balks at being controlled by the UN will be deemed to be a threat to the UN’s definition of peace. And the UN has authority under this section of its Charter to wage war to accomplish its idea of peace.
I went on to say that Serbia learnt that lesson.
@ Bear Klein:
C’est domage.
@ Ted Belman:
Ted, accept not one politician is talking about a permanent solution (or capturing Gaza now) and when I watch Israeli TV I do not hear anyone advocating for this.
Right now with the major civil unrest and potential for other conflicts Israel is simply not going to capture Gaza now. I agree with you that these periodic wars are terrible and as I said in 2005 we never should have pulled out.
What Israel can do is quit allowing Qatar to provide money to Hamas. Make Hamas fall apart and destroy it from the air or actions that capture or kill the leadership. Start finding ways from behind the scenes to have people start leaving Gaza.
@ Bear Klein:
I am among the Israelis who are done with mowing the lawn every few years. I favour a permanent solution instead. Its time.
Israel does not want to capture Gaza at this point. It is trying do more and more serious damage to Hamas and Islamic Jihad. This could take a week or two since Israel is being surgical and trying very hard not to kill non combatants.
So if Hamas eventually stops firing because it is effectively defeated or the damage is serious enough for the IDFs being able to claim clear victory it will then comply with cease-fire order because its military goals have been met.
