Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan accused the Israeli Mossad intelligence agency of playing a role in last Monday’s overwhelming “yes” vote in a referendum on Kurdish independence.

In a televised speech Saturday, Erdogan said the waving of Israeli flags during celebrations of the vote was proof of the Mossad’s involvement.

“This shows one thing, that this administration [in northern Iraq] has a history with Mossad, they are hand-in-hand together,” he said.

Speaking in the eastern Turkish city of Erzurum, Erdogan said Turkey was saddened by the sight of Iraqi Kurds waving the Israeli flags.

Israel became the only country to officially back the establishment of an independent Kurdish state last month, when Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said in a statement that Israel “supports the legitimate efforts of the Kurdish people to attain a state of its own.”

Erdogan derided Israel’s support in a message to Iraqi Kurdish leaders, asking, “Are you aware of what you are doing? Only Israel supports you.”

Erdogan has previously warned that continuing Israeli support for Kurdistan’s independence would put at risk the renormalization of ties between Ankara and Jerusalem. Relations between the two countries broke down in 2010 after the IDF’s interception of the Gaza-bound aid ship Mavi Marmara and the deaths of 10 Turkish pro-Palestinian activists in clashes with Israeli naval commandos on its deck.

  1. Erdogan is not a partner of Israel for anything. IT is actually over time that the Israeli government tell him that in unmistakable terms.
Of course we can easily raise his ire by saying things that are true… That the Kurds deserve a state of their own is one of them.
