New legislation, which would have special status as a basic law, designed to ensure Israel is officially “a nation-state of the Jewish people” • MK Avi Dichter says such law is essential because Israel’s enemies are trying to deny its Jewish character.

The Ministerial Committee for Legislation is expected to discuss Sunday a new bill that would define Israel as a Jewish state. The bill, “Basic Law: Israel as the Nation-State of the Jewish People,” was introduced by Likud MK Avi Dichter, who is the head of the Knesset Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee. It has already garnered support from 11 MKs in the coalition.
According to the bill, the goal of the new measure is to “preserve Israel’s status as the nation-state of the Jewish people by having its values as a Jewish and democratic state become an integral part of its basic laws.”
The bill is based on a similar bill that was introduced about four years ago. The language of that bill was revised after legal experts said it might infringe the rights of minorities and undermine religious freedoms. In Israel, basic laws have been recognized by the courts as a de-facto constitution, and as such have a special status. In some basic laws, amendments to certain provisions must be made with a special majority.
Dichter said on Wednesday that the bill was “essential in light of the current state of affairs, with people both at home and abroad trying to deny the right of the Jewish people to have a national home in its homeland.” He said that those people also want to “roll back the recognition of the State of Israel as the nation-state of the Jewish people.”
Dichter stressed that the “Palestinians are now openly in favor of having the nation-state of the Jewish people wiped out, but Israel, which has insisted that its adversaries recognize it as the state of the Jewish people and has justifiably asked its supporters around the world to support this demand, should not shy away from proudly claiming this identity through primary legislation.”
“Nationality Law approved in Ministerial Committee
Bill anchors State of Israel as nation-state of Jewish people, establishes Hebrew as official language of state.”

SZ: Upon re-reading your statement, does it make any sense to you? (when I try to to take out the redundant block quotes, it puts them back in automatically. Over and over.) Ha! victory! SZ: 1, Machines: 0
You know they could get whole new audiences for team sports from among those who are bored by it because there’ s really no reason to care who wins, if they name some leagues after machines and some after humans, and then people could really root for the humans or the machines. Especially the over-50 crowd, which is most of the country, and for whom it is an issue, remembering the way it was before.
Do you know that when I moved into my apartment in the 70s, there were clothes lines in back? Having a washer or dryer would be a violation of the lease, since the building is so old and it’s in right there in black and white. No elevator. No laundromat where you can do it yourself nearby any longer; there were four when I moved in around the corner, now there’s one several blocks away whose machines never work, and for which you have to wait on line. I was taking the subway to do my laundry, for a while there. Now, I found a nearby laundry service, that has free pickup and delivery, with $5 tip each way and it’s hard to walk. So, I don’t do my own laundry anymore. Ahh, the convenience of modern technology!

Steps must be taken at the same time to clearly explain that the Jewish PEOPLE, Jewish NATION, and Jewish RELIGION are not synonymous, nor one and the same.
