Last week, Western countries, led by France and Spain, abstained from voting on the wretched UNESCO resolution denying the Jewish people’s ties to Jerusalem, the Temple Mount and the Western Wall. Muslim countries, including Algeria, Lebanon, Iran and even Egypt and Morocco, all voted in favor of the decision.
Former Prime Minister Ehud Barak called the vote Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s “monumental failure.” Really? Would it really have been possible to prevent France and Spain from abstaining or to stop the support from Muslim countries? It seems not, and here are a few reasons why:
A Muslim country’s recognition of the Jewish people’s right to any of these places is considered by Islam to be heresy. According to Islamic tradition, Sulaiman — that is, King Solomon — was a Muslim, and he built a mosque on the Temple Mount. Any remnants of the Holy Temple or archaeological findings that point to the millennia-long Jewish history on the site would mean undermining the foundations of the Muslim faith. It’s no wonder that the Waqf, the Muslim authority in charge of the Temple Mount, systematically destroys any such findings. Any Israeli effort to sway the Muslim vote, including among countries with which it has ties, is destined to fail.
A month ago, French newspaper Le Figaro published an interview with a researcher who analyzes seventh grade textbooks, the grade in which the French curriculum teaches about Islam. His main conclusion was that “they swept under the rug anything that could interfere with conflict-free teaching of the history of Islamic culture, in a manner bordering on servility — all in the service of dogmatic praise for a shared life.” The researcher raised examples not only of ignored facts, but also of factual distortions.
I looked through one of these textbooks, and I found another omission relating to the nation of Israel: The best-selling seventh grade history textbook in France quotes the pact in which Umar, the second caliph, grants freedom of religion to Christians in Jerusalem immediately after conquering the city. But the quote ignores the Muslim source of the following sentence: “Jews may not live in Al-Quds [Jerusalem].” This omission is not a Muslim initiative, but a French one made by a major publisher. I also analyzed an 11th-grade history book, the grade in which the Israeli-Palestinian conflict is taught. It includes a map that labels the Temple Mount as the “mosque plaza.”
The reason behind this sort of behavior on the part of Western countries is fear, whether from conflict with their own Muslim communities or from conflict with the Muslim countries that buy tens of millions of dollars of their products. The monumental failure belongs exclusively to Western countries.
Israel must refuse to be the scapegoat for the West’s obsequiousness. The decision to cut ties with UNESCO is an important step in that direction. It will force Western media outlets to report on the grotesque distortion of history (which they ignored last week), and it will force Western governments to face their responsibility for their delegates’ votes.
